Pop-Up Master Class with Matthew Reinhart: Dowel & String Spinner

I know it's been a while, but I've really missed being your "Pop-Up Master Class" professor... so, I'm back! In this video, we'll be making a "dowel and string spinner", a spinning pop-up mechanism never fails to impress! Intermediate and advanced pop-up creators will enjoy making this one, I think. Your Master Classes are my favorite! I hope that you do a class explaining your use of speed. How different angles produce pop-ups that open at different speeds. Please explain what is faster, and what is slower. Don't forget to tell us why speed matters.

Thank you for posting this video! I have successfully made this mechanism one time. Every attempt thereafter resulted in failure and I was at a loss to explain why. You have given me some avenues to explore that might actually work. I had thought of paper weight, but somehow had not even considered that additional bracing might be needed. I do agree with you, when working, this mechanism is spectacular. I love that the action happens every time the card/page is opened and closed. It's almost magical and it's very fun!

I was lucky enough to find the Sendak book at a secondhand store a couple of years ago for next to nothing . I’ve loved pop up books all my life and your tutorials are awesome!

Thank you. This was awesome. I was wanting to learn how to do this. My sister and I like the art classes and master classes the best and really are kind of disappointed that it is a print out template all the time on the DIY. Is there a way to do the dowel and string spinner where it stands up out of the page?

I had a book as a child that did this with only string. This is really beautiful and robust, but I want to try the other way for weight and cost of materials. does anyone know of a tutorial for this?
