Hold up, what Polaris did then was already being known as grunge and alt, it was considered indie in the 80s when REM got started. I was thinking I should do the Paramount free trial, but I can't, so I guess once again, a big company will be forcing me to sail the seven seas.

Definitely Wes Anderson-y. I think the most fitting description I've heard was "The Wonder Years" if it were written by Marcel Duchamp and directed by David Lynch.

I started watching this channel back in 2018. I forget how I discovered it, but the initial draw was always getting to the 90s. I watched the few past ones and continued on with each passing video. Over the years the journey overtook the destination as this channel is one of the few “drop everything” and watch ones for me. I’m speechless on my feelings over this amazing video. Now that my initial finish line has been crossed, I’m ecstatic to see what comes next. Congrats on 101. Now we just need the season 3 dvd to finally release. I bought them when they released and still have them to this day

The Adventures of Pete and Pete can be described in one single, appropriate word: GOAT. It was well acted, well written, embraced its “weird for the sake of weird” badge with honor, never EVER spoke down to its child audience, and perhaps most importantly of all, it was a kid’s comedy show that was actually, genuinely funny. Hell, it’s STILL funny, even with the nostalgia glasses off. I will always adore this show, and it will always be on my Nickelodeon Mount Rushmore. Oh, and also, as I watch Nick Knacks, I currently have a 5 year old son. My nickname for him? “My Little Viking”.

It is so strange to hear this show was a departure from contemporary Nick aesthetics and that corporate basically stayed out of the writing/directing-to me, Pete and Pete has always DEFINED that era and in many ways the entirety of Nick's output. (Now, looking back I see how untrue that is.) The show had a huge impact on my adolescence, but what's funny is I don't remember sharing my fondness for it with any of my friends. It was my older sister and I who always watched it together. Maybe that made it more meaningful to me-we were two siblings who could legitimately call ourselves best friends (like Pete and Pete) while simultaneously having someone else we'd call the same (Ellen, Artie, Nona). Still, it wasn't until I saw one of the reunions that I heard the creators talk about their checklist of "funny, sad, strange, and beautiful." Now I'm always looking for other shows and movies that check the same boxes.

The indie aesthetic of this show is something I truly appreciate upon rewatch. Very few shows/ films capture the vibe of living in the suburbs with eccentric people, best friends and that magical summer that feels neverending. The only things that come close to that feeling are The Way Way Back, Little Miss Sunshine, Napoleon Dynamite and Phineas and Ferb. But Pete and Pete hits different man. It hits different. Edit: forgot about Freaks and Geeks. It’s set in the 80s but I think it still applies to that description.

I get the feeling that Nick keeps this thing from streaming and full home video releases because it makes their chintzy little laugh track kiddy sitcoms look positively pathetic by comparison. This show isn't so much of a case of "you can't make a show like this anymore" since it's a case of "they probably couldn't have made a show like this back then." If they weren't in such an experimental mode, this thing wouldn't have existed period. We'd just get our tacky little kids that can't act and adults that over react and fall into cakes with their good clothes on, that every comedy writer thinks kids actually like.

An extremely small thing, but the mention of Artie being all over merchandising reminds me a lot of how pre-nostalgia Rocko merchandising had a lot of Spunky in it - Spunky was all over fast food toys, he had an exclusive VHS short (albeit using recycled footage), the SNES game was all about protecting Spunky, every launch ad makes some kind of mention of Spunky - and that makes perfect sense, mind you, Spunky is both gross and cute, a combination you don't see often but is basically marketing gold; is a major character; dog ownership is probably the only element of Rocko that can be marketed as relatable to kids on a superficial level (even though the show's writing is way more kid-oriented than a lot of internet people will tell you); and the "real" secondary characters so to speak in Heff and Filb weren't completely sidelined (they both got a VHS compilation each, and Heffer got a plushie) but I do find it quite fascinating that Spunky seemed to be so favoured by Nickelodeon and its licensors, especially considering that Nick execs supposedly didn't like Heffer when the show was being pitched.
@Saintnick903 ай бұрын
Oh man, I've been looking forward to this for a while, and it didn't disappoint. The Adventures of Pete and Pete isn't a show I grew up with but watched later through KZbin, and I think it's a model for what kids' shows should be. It's funny, insightful and weird and doesn't talk down to kids but rather speaks to them at their own level. It really was the "'90s alternative rock" of Nickelodeon shows, capturing the attitudes of that decade perfectly. (Also, I know that any discussion of laugh tracks in sitcoms will lead to a debate about whether they were necessary or not, but I think everyone can agree that this show would not have worked with a laugh track. Just another reason why this show was one of a kind.) Also, I know those interludes are basically just a way to recreate the types of situations Big Pete would narrate about on the show, but they're strangely very relatable, even with the name parodies. Between these and your Goosebumps rewrites, you could have made a killing as a YA author, Greg. Nice work! I really need to see I Saw the TV Glow. Looks like it's coming to Max next month. I'd also like to put in a plug for the Pete and Pete reunion sketch from 2012 which features a good amount of the original cast members and is very funny, but I won't spoil too much beyond that. (Danny Tamberelli also voiced Arnold on The Magic School Bus, which blows my mind.)

This show acted as an early understanding of my dad's relationship to his family growing up. He refers back to this show often as a reference. I agree that Petes' Mom didn't get the focus she deserved, but the episodes that focus on Petes' Dad are in many ways the cornerstones of my understanding of the relationship between my father his father. He is a late baby boomer, had a dad who took them on long trips with odd competitions with neighbors, and often had very different dynamics with his two boys. This might be the most anticipated entry in your series that I have. This weird little show, with great music, bizarre characters, and real heart. Truly peak Nickelodeon. Many of their other programs were entertaining and well-made, but nothing else can deliver the poignant, introspective, wistful, or melancholy like this one while still keeping it all fun and quirky. Things like the departure of Artie as metaphor for the inevitable loss of a young child's magical, anything goes worldview over time really help it hold up on a level other Nick shows don't.

Pete and Pete was a little too sophisticated for my young mind when it originally aired on Nick but when The N came along and started showing reruns I felt a deep personal connection instantly. My love for it only grew as I got older. What really struck me about it especially as a kid was how effortlessly they described and depicted real experiences and feelings that every child has but no one ever really bothered to put into words. Like hearing your favorite song for the first time or how different everything feels to you on a sick day or those little events that signal the beginning and end of the summer. It's got beautiful cinematography and I don't think that's a sentence I can say about any other kid show. And to say the soundtrack helped shape my taste in music would be an understatement. I still listen to that Polaris album every summer. I highly recommend tracking down the original air versions of the specials because they all have completely different soundtracks that were dubbed over when the licensing ran out and the show went to series. They're out there if you know where to look. "Summer Vacation" had a MINISTRY song in it, of all things! Also a personal flex: Rick Barberette (Bill Korn) was a math teacher at my high school.

The Adventures of Pete & Pete is one of those shows I watched as a kid that's just as awesome as an adult, it's hard to explain, it feels so '90s in the right ways but also so timeless, it's like Twin Peaks meets Leave It to Beaver meets The Wonder Years with a sprinkle of Wes Anderson, which seems like a weird combo but works perfectly, plus the soundtrack & the cameos (everyone from Michael Stipe (R.E.M.) to Steve Buscemi to Debbie Harry (Blondie) to Iggy Pop) are just as memorable as the show itself. The theme song "Hey Sandy" by Polaris is a bop. Overall, Pete & Pete still holds up pretty well & is just as great now as it was back in the day. Glad it's finally getting the flowers it deserved. What a fun, weird & quirky time to be alive. (Fun fact: Rick Gomez, who played main bully Endless Mike Hellstrom, is the real life older brother of Joshua Gomez, who played Morgan Guillermo Grimes, the wisecracking best friend of the title character on the cult spy action/adventure dramedy series Chuck. I didn't really know they're related until recently. How mind-boggling. 😂)

True fans of Pete & Pete would know that according to big Pete that Ellen was meant to be a girl and a friend but not a "girlfriend". Both brothers were deliberately named "Pete" as a time saving idea for when their parents would call them in from being outside just by hollering the name Pete as little as once if not twice. ALSO: Instead of bullies, both Petes encountered villains.

This was quite the journey for me since I didn't get to see much Pete & Pete as a kid. I saw some of the shorts and for some reason, I thought they were clips from show episodes, but the show being on Sunday was the big stumbling block because I almost never had control of a TV with cable on Sundays growing up. The only one I managed to see was the How I Spent My Summer Vacation special, so seeing clips from that brought it back to me (though I remember Mr. Tastee having a goofier voice than that and I don't know why). I still have them and watch them every few years. I think the show subliminally shaped my taste in music, I never gave much thought to the music on the show during the original run, other than the opening theme, as I wasn't even 10 years old. I discovered Magnetic Fields and Drop Nineteens on my own, and rewatching the show I pointed to screen like Leonardo DiCaprio in Once Upon a Time in Hollywood when I heard their music on it.

Terrific work on this video! You did the show absolute justice. Also always refreshing to learn more about the show, like I had no clue about the Snow Days movie that Nickelodeon botched so poorly. They definitely didn't care about it long term, which is probably why it got panned and forgotten relatively quick. I was very lucky to have watched the show when it briefly reran on our regional Nickelodeon feed back in 2008. It just felt so different from any other show on that network. It definitely affected me long term, especially when it comes to my taste in music. It's also one of the few live action shows in my opinion that didn't treat their audience like doofuses and that aged quite well in many aspects.

Secondly, Pete and Pete probably is the most formative show of my life. It may not be a good thing but a lot of my sense of growing up was defined by this show. Third, it's also the show that lingers in a dog more than any other show. I have been able to enjoy a lot of my childhood over and over again through DVDs or streaming and this show is one of those weird ones that just is gone. That should be changed. Great insights and fantastic research. Pete and Pete was largely before my time, with even the reruns ending before I had the combination of care and control over what I watched on TV. But it's always fascinated me. One of those things from childhood that leaves a strong impression but remains just obscure enough to evade understanding through most of your life. Thank you for offering some understanding.
Been waiting for this and was not disappointed. What a fantastic love letter to Pete and Pete. You took a lot of what I was thinking and said it better than I ever could, and I learned some new things about a show that I already knew a lot about. Pete and Pete was always a big part of my life. I literally grew up in Wellsville (season 3 Wellsville, at least - I remember a lot of the places in the last episode). I met (and have a picture with) Dad at the Slimed panel discussion in NYC and played soccer once with big Pete in Brooklyn after he was done working on a TV show nearby. Two things: Bayonne is pronounced Bay-own. NJ town names are weird, so I don’t fault you lol. Also, have you seen the music video for Water Underground by Real Estate? If you haven’t, I think you’ll like it.

2:24 - Hey! You leave THE MARTIAN HOP alone! That song rules and was an avantgard brightspot in the pre-Beatles and pre-Elvis hellscape of 1950s crap-music! Jokes aside, this was a fantastic retrospective and will be sharing it with my two brothers as PETE AND PETE was (and still is) one of our all time favorite programs, deserving of a proper full-series release in the hopeful future.

Thanks for reminding me I'm still mad about that 3rd DVD set I'm pretty sure still shows on my Amazon preorders to this day. Seriously though, thanks for this documentary. We got cable in 1993 just after my dad passed away, and I remember this being one of the first, although by no means the only, Nick things I latched onto. There's something about the tone of it that meshed really well with the grief I didn't quite understand how to process at the time, being 8-9. I guess maybe the nostalgia for simpler times, although it seems funny saying that now as that's not an emotion I should have had at that age, but circumstances and whatnot. I also had a massive crush on younger Pete, haha. Gave me a long-standing thing for redheads. It was nice learning so much about the shorts that spun into the show, because I had no experience with those. Looking forward to checking out some of your other stuff.

Casting former child actors as a symbol for aging is a really neat idea. TV Glow is gonna be a movie I work up the nerve to see, but I’m definitely using some of the ideas.

So this shook a little memory dust loose. I remember Nickelodeon's promo department did ANOTHER 60-second-long sitcom series at the same time as "Pete and Pete." They did another one called "Yours Truly." The main character was a middle school-aged girl who served as the narrator, and the gimmick was that her narration was her writing in her diary. She signed all of her diary entries "Yours Truly" and in keeping with that theme, we never actually learned her name. Is Nick Knacks going to cover "Yours Truly"? (If there's even a reason to.) And did Nick do any OTHER 60-second shows?

I don't think any show gives me almost a sad sense of nostalgia quite like "pete n pete". I liked it when I was a kid...but over the years have truly appreciated it for what it was.

I LOVED PETE AND PETE! I was only 5 or 6 when the shorts came out, but I do remember them so clearly.

48:00: Personally, I never related to the hierarchy of the schools as depicted in movies and on TV. I went to school in the inner city and in the ghetto where most of the student body was non-white, largely poor or working class, and where a good chunk of the kids were refugees or from refugee families. In that kind of heterogeneous environment, hierarchies are much harder to establish and enforce with half a dozen languages being spoken, people just trying to learn American culture (really, there are several depending on where are you), and so many ethnic differences. 1:02:00: Remember, some of us live in northern cities in the Midwest or Northeast where snow days are practically an inevitability. I grew up in Minneapolis, and they happened every year! They were always a blessed occurrence. :D I've noticed since the '80s and '90s that actual depictions of winter have become kind of rare. So often winter was reserved for a Christmas special. For us northerners, winter is a season in which Thanksgiving and Christmas happen to occur, as well as Valentine's Day, and sometimes even Halloween and Easter. Hell, I lived through the Halloween Blizzard of 1993, so sometimes even that gets swept up into winter! Winter often doesn't look pretty, and it's often dark. I went to school before sunrise and came home only about two hours before sunset in the depths of winter. If you have a lot of snow on the ground, it makes the nights brighter. You still played outside because only true monsters would make you come in at 4:30 PM just because the sun set. The numbers on the clock meant more than the sun. The same was kind of true in summer when you could still read a book by the light outside even at 10:00 PM. Fourth of July fireworks required you to stay up late until nearly 11:00 PM so it would be dark enough to be worth it. Endless summer days...

That was quite a life story that you’ve told from your childhood, Greg. I’m sure that every one in a few kids who were your age back then tried using that cry-until-you-win strategy. Just don’t be surprised if this Carly Branderpack person you mentioned sees your video and decides, “Hmm, maybe I’ll start following Greg’s channel and watch more of those Nick Knacks videos he’s been making.”

There are other Nick shows of the era I would rather watch than Pete and Pete (Are You Afraid of the Dark, Clarissa Explains It All, Secret Life of Alex Mack and Hey Dude). As a kid who grew up in the 90s though, it captures the spirit of the decade better than any other. There was an absurd quality to growing up between "The End of History" and September 11th, that Pete & Pete nails flawlessly.

This remains as one of my favorite shows of all time. I remember 5 years ago you mentioned about doing a retrospective and damn was it worth it the wait! Theres a certain a vibe to this show that reminds me of childhood in the autumn. Mostly cause the series takes place during that season. But its incredible to think that this show was a gateway into my love of indie rock. I remember Nickelodeon hyping the Summer special cause the dude from REM was in it. And thanks to my late night viewings of MTVs 120 Minutes, I learned about Apples in Stereo and Drop Nineteens. The latter who recently reunited after 30 years, toured, and released a new album. In fact at their concert, they played one of the songs from the show and even mentioned Pete and Pete. It was such a surreal event for several reasons. My favorite episode is when Luscious Jackson performs. Anytime I hear that band it reminds me of Little Pete's school dance. But overall, it sucks that this show isnt getting the proper recognition from the rights owners. Of all TV shows, this deserves the blu-ray treatment. Im assuming it has something to do with music licensing since season 3 is full of musical guests while shows soundtrack uses other artists aside from Polaris. Anyway, fantastic review and heres hoping one day fans will finally get a proper release.
