I'm pretty sure the book reading segments in Reading Rainbow did have some animation though.

There were some neat one-shot stories covered in Video Comics--for example, the story of a man who had one dollar in the whole world, deposited in the bank, and used a suspended-animation drug to put himself out for a few hundred years. When he awoke, the compound interest had made him rich. He lived a few years like this--then sunk his entire fortune into gold and tried it again, hoping to become even richer...but ended up awakening in a future where gold had become plentiful and therefore nearly worthless. The net worth of what he had left? One dollar!

I watch the show as a kid and loved it dearly. I didn't care that it wasn't animated I didn't even notice. I got to read stories stories I never would be able to get as a child in the 70s. I specifically remember seeing stories of The Flash, Swamp Thing and Ultra the Multi Alien.

In an alternative universe, Video Comics continued as very late night filler through the 1980s and ended up adapting Alan Moore's SWAMP THING, causing such a scandal that the Comic Code Authority regained it's strength and ended comic books as a popular form for another 30 years. Because of that, Tim Burton's BATMAN was never made and the modern superhero film never came into being. Modern blockbusters are adaptations of toys and Japanese Tokusatsu instead. Great video as always.

Oh my god... I have been trying to recall the title "Broken Saints" for... 15 years now? I vividly remember getting a DVD of the show, giving it a shot with one of my roommates in the room in college, asking if he wanted to see more which was met with a "Not particularly" aaaand that's where I dropped it. Watching this first episode is triggering some weirdly intense sense memories. It's appropriate that you posted this video on my birthday in 2017 since you have retroactively solved one of my biggest remaining dumb brain mysteries.

I'm guessing Warner initially being Nickelodeon's parent company played a role in the channel eventually airing Looney Tunes reruns in the 80s and 90s.

They were STILL doing this in the Mid 80s (on VHS) I still have some of mine from when i was a child . with He-man, She-Ra, some Transformers and other HUGE I.P.s. It was done to push Toy Sales thats where the money was back then.

Nice. It really is disturbing how tangled early entertainment was with crime. I wonder if some of the norms laid down then are to blame for some of the toxic aspects of Hollywood today which we have recently seen. A sort of gang mentality.
@TheEman5905 жыл бұрын
I look at it more like a high school clique mentality. If you're not part of the clique, you get singled out and with a target on your back if you don't conform. The jock, the homeboy, the pretty girl, the materialistic one, the hippie one, but all surfaces due to being like minded sheep. Which goes back to criminal as I call it counterfeit
@KevinKess5 жыл бұрын
Almost makes you wonder if organized crime also played into (if not outright funded and orchestrated) all the problems concerning pedophilia within Hollywood, nowadays.

Interesting how the use of "Oh my God" (considered controversial among Christians as using the Lord's name in vain) can be seen this early on Nickelodeon. Rocko's Modern Life would later utter the phrase in the beginning of the show's run. But later episodes of Rocko, they say "Gosh" instead.
