I have a QUESTION: with record labels, What is their mandate? What is their purpose? Is it to boosts local talent or are they operating as distribution outlets for foreign artists that want to penetrate the African/South African market? I say this looking at what warner has achieved in the past 3 Years...haven’t seen anything to be honest.

Thank you so much for this insightful video guys. Ta Scoop okho ndikumamele and im grateful for the information. Vigi, who can one speak to at Universal for a record deal if you don't have representation? What is the actual process? who to call etc any pointers there? Again Thank you.
@athenkosimatshini17165 жыл бұрын
great content... there are several deals that one can enter into regarding distribution of music, like Speedsta mentioned, license to distribute your music, of which even licensing has different types, you can have an exclusive one where u as an artist can not sell your own music on the side but universal does. However, a non-exclusive one will enable you to sell it on the side, also you can negotiate for territories also, but that's another stuff. secondly, what Vigi mentioned is vital about entering into a joint venture with a company, but it seems many artists don't wanna put in investment, which result into them selling all their rights when they sign into companies... Consulting a lawyer is not expensive, rates can be negotiated, especially for reviewing a contract and providing legal advice. Read contracts before signing, secondly, know what you want and have it put on the contract, and be clear before you commit or enter into an agreement.

Speedsta knows the whole game. Brilliant content gents and lady. I have question and anyone on the comment section can answer should they have an answer. Let's say I just redorded a "hit" song, 100% original. How do I go about making sure that it reaches a wider range of people nationwide? What are the steps to take to get your music out there as much as possible. Let's say, with a budget of 10k for a song.

Great show firstly my question is on behalf of a lot of new acts. How important is creating and working on relationships that grow you. what is using internet beats (mostly international sound) doing to the local producers/beat makers esp when it comes to trap or the new hip hop in SA. Hope it makes sense
@morenamatsena58885 жыл бұрын
Signing a 360 deal means the label handles your recording, publishing and managing side of business ... When it comes to signing a contract, read through it, and get an lawyer to go through it with you, even a law student from UJ doing their 3rd year, reach out ... explain what you want as an artist and work from that, you're negotiating, you want more, most definitely the label will take more from you, it's business.

@Scoop, when you come up with an idea at your work space that has got nothing to do with what you working on, you have a right to own that. however, certain company clause are written in a way that whatever you come up with belongs to the company, of which this goes back to what you guys mentioned about going through your work contract before signing or have it reviewed by a legal personnel or someone who has better knowledge about contracts.

Hi guys, can you have a discussion on music video rights ( who gets what, who should upload the video on social media "artist or the person who shot it" and how to protect your content)
@joshthemanagermolotsi43455 жыл бұрын
I may be wrong but I think that the person who makes arrangements for the production of the music video owns the rights in the music video. There is something called VPL which is the public performance of music videos. It is important to note that VPL is not law, it has to be dealt with in contract. VPL is a royalty that is paid to the performers in the music video. If you are in a music video as a dancer or whatever, you should be paid a royalty but it is not law so labels will not pay you and it will likely be omitted from your recording contract.

guys i feel like its hard getting the team,iv tried. at this point i'd sign with a label. my music is fire yet its still hard being signed with the label i have been independent for 6years now. ay FEDE. This is Depressing me i sometimes feel like i should quite this music but i cant.
@joshthemanagermolotsi43455 жыл бұрын
I've read enough contracts to know that the very first offer you get probably won't be a good one. But it is the most important thing to own your masters because you decide what to do with them. If the label owns the masters they decide what to do with them. I agree that you have to split the money somewhere and that is exactly what a licensing deal is. It is splitting the cash, giving the label a percentage of the income while you own all the rights. A licensing deal is a great deal to get. Speedsta forgot to mention that in a licensing deal, the masters are guaranteed to revert to you. I say this because I am an artist manager and I've seen these deals so many times.
