Jethro, no exaggeration, your channel saved my life. Your philosophical musings have encorourage me to move on from my past, the heart ache, the despair, the feeling of betrayal... Genuinely, you've encouraged me to get out into this great country of our. Encouraged me to go on my first bike packing trip - alone! - to Scotland. Encouraged me to see the beauty in life. So from me a heart felt congratulations for what your choices will bring. Thank you. Good luck sir!

I will take that as the best comment I could receive. Honestly don't really know what to say except that if that is the case then I'm very proud of whatever it was I did that has such an effect. Life is usually pretty good even when it seems to be otherwise and getting out into the world is often the best way to see the goodness. Thank you for the kind words and I hope you have many more fantastic adventures lined up in the future!

I find myself really looking forward to future episodes: "An Englishman on a bike in Sweden", "The best way to transport small people by bike", "I bought a Volvo", "Jethro and Alan get lost in the Swedish woods" and "I wish I had brought my Tentsile with me". I quit my last job because I was being floated to various roles as an OB/Neonatal nurse on a daily basis. Since I had experience in Labor and delivery, postpartum, Antipartum, Level 2 Nursery, and Pediatrics my role and patients would sometimes be changed 6 times in 1 shift. I would start out as a labor nurse, then go to postpartum/mother/baby and aquire 3 more couplets plus the 1 I just labored. Then if we had a sick baby I would get pulled to the Level 2 Nursery. Then I may wind up in Peds or being pulled back to the other areas. The last shift I worked there I had 13 different patients. I had to not only provide care to these patients but I also had to chart on all of them and give report on all of them. I was not paid for my extra work and I was the only nurse who was being used in that way.
@JethroJessop
@JethroJessop Жыл бұрын
It honestly amazes me that there are any nurses left in the world. It sounds like an incredibly hard job that I don't think I could survive and yet every time I find myself in a medical situation (not that often thankfully) I amazed by the kindness and positivity of the folk in that role. I fully understand your pain and I tip my hat to you for even trying!

@@JethroJessop I’m kind of rooting for the AI now and more time for you with developing this very enjoyable channel of yours. Maybe this is the future for all mankind, AI and automation. Not needed in production, but still important as consumers of the goods produced, humans will be free to spend their time more creatively, living on some kind of Citizen salary… At least until the AI overlord considers us more a nuisance than a somewhat amusing pet to have around. 😱 ( this went south )😀

In 2001, burned out from the Y2K free-for-all, I quit the IT world, farmed off my various employees to various customers, and shut down my consulting company. We bought a cruising boat and went to Mexico. Our lives took various twists and turns, almost all positive, and we find ourselves 20+ years later getting ready for retirement. We wound up in a place we never expected to settle, not Mexico, but we are quite happy here. Sure, we might not be as financially well off as we could have been, but we will have a comfortable retirement, and we've already had more adventures than most people ever dream of. I guess the rambling end of this is, take a chance. Life is uncertain and you shouldn't find yourself in your twilight years regretting that you didn't take that chance.

Thank's for sharing this Jethro, and all the best of luck to you! I hope everything works out really well! And, as for your channel, a true inspiration for adventures near and far, I believe a bright future lies ahead. In the genre of outdoorsy youtube-channels, you really have a unique voice. Your little stories, and your calm philosophic and poetic reflections on aspects of life, big and small, are an oasis amongst the noise. I first found your channel when I was looking for a woodstove and you presented the Firebox Nano, amongst dry leaves and patches of snow. I immediately felt that this is something different, something beyond a simple gear review. And when you had shared your delight over that little piece of tin, talked about the shared human experience of fire and your childhood backyard bonfires, you wrapped the whole small fire-theme up with the simple words "It's like having a little friend, It's great!" Well, much like your channel, i'd say!😊 You got me hooked with that one, and I subscribed right away. In the south of Sweden we have a 270 km long cycle path called Sydost-leden, going from Växjö to Simrishamn, or vice versa if you insist. It's mostly free from cars. Also smooth and good for carrying eggs!😉 And still, If you should be out of eggs by the time you arrive in Växjö, you can visit our local farm Kronobergs Kungsgård, where they sell eggs of every size and colour. And don't miss Ekotemplet, a water tower with the most stunning echo, due to a concave underside. Under it, right in the middle, even a whisper comes back twentyfold. All children love it, big and small. I took my son there for the first time when he was about Minnas age, and he was in awe! Once again, good luck with everything! Lycka till! Anna

Thank you. I really appreciate the encouragement. Did you get the Nano in the end? I still love mine, though I also bought the 5" version which is great if you don't mind the extra size and weight. I have cycled a bit in Sweden in the past - I actually passed through Växjo on my way from Kalmar to Halmstad - and I love it. So many quiet lanes, so many long bike paths and all of them with beautiful views at every turn. I have to keep reminding myself that I'm going there to spend time with Louise and Minna otherwise I'd get completely sidetracked looking at maps and planning rides 😉 I'm the perfect scenario I'll get to do plenty of cycling though and I rather like the sound of the echoey water tower so who knows? Keep an eye out and one day you might spot me peddling into town in search of eggs 😉

Actually I didn't get the nano. Some time later I found out about the 5" titanium version, and so I thought I'd save up for that one. In the meantime I'm using a little Hobo stove that came with my Kelly kettle, and sometimes I use a cylindric Ikea type stainless steel cutlery stand, which nests perfectly in my pot. It is a true blessing being part of a childs life. Watching them grow and learn, and seeing the world thru their eyes. Everything is new again, and even the smallest patch of woods will be an adventure. Now that's a ride you wouldn't want to miss out on! And one that won't wait. Like the road will. Which is why I won't tell you that they are opening three new long coast to coast cycle paths in Skåne on the third of June! (Remember, I never said anything about this. It must have been the little red man on my shoulder. In the future, I think I better put him on the handlebar instead.😉) I'll keep my eagle eye open, though. And if I see tracks of omelette, then I'll know who's been around town!😉

The 5" is great and far more versatile if you don't mind a little extra weight. You can do all kinds of stuff with it. I've smoked fish and baked bread on mine in the Billy can oven and I recently baked an egg on it (video coming soon). You are absolutely right about kids. I love to be a part of a new person finding their shape in the world. It will probably kill me but I'm absolutely up for it 😉 But, these ing distance trails? Obviously I didn't hear it from you but are there any more details? Names, maps, articles etc? I'm asking for a friend 😉
@Anna-Ess
@Anna-Ess Жыл бұрын
Thanks for the advice, it seems the 5" will be a good choice! Speaking of which, I can see that you have already started to practice small-scale baking havoc.😉With lots of charm and humour as main ingredients! This is actually something of a specialty of children of Minna's age, and I think that if you two combine forces, full-scale baking havoc will not be totally unobtainable in the foreseeable future!😉 I'm confident that you will survive as well as thrive in her company! And I'm sure looking forward to the egg baking video! You can tell your friend that it's called Cykelleden Skåne. The three main parts are: Kristianstad-Ängelholm 176 km. Ystad-Båstad 251 km Lomma-Kristianstad 143 km. A few minutes ago I tried to post this commentary with a link to the homepage with maps and lots of information about it, in English. But that commentary disappeared almost immediately, so I guess KZbin didn't like that link. So you will have to search for the homepage (or else provide me with your e-mail or Discord adress, so I can send you the link).

@@Anna-Ess I have just been reading up on these trails. There is definitely a video series to be had there! I wonder if I can convince the tourist office to take me on as a roaming cycle advocate - exploring the trails of sweden and singing their praises ;) And yeah, I am really hoping to get out for some wilderness baking and campfire cooking with Minna and Louise soon. Louise has been in a few videos in the past but I'm not sure Minna will take direction very well. Those videos will have extra chaos and ad-libbing for sure!

I won't attempt to give advice beyond saying, talk to your future self and see what his opinion is. Sounds daft but it worked for me. There is a lot to be said for safety and comfort, we've spent 1000s of years trying to maximise it, while at the same time understanding that it can be really oppressive. Change is good if you do it for the right reasons and on your own terms. I recommend a long bike ride to sort your thoughts out 😉

@@JethroJessop Thanks a lot for the reply. I will actually try that! Yep, I definitely resonate with the comfort part - and the positives and negatives. I find change to be very important, and I find myself growing more from throwing myself into new situations than simply relying on daily discipline (which I can struggle with). After a year or two in Istanbul, I would hopefully do a bit of a cycle tour around Europe (a region I've seen very little of) and perhaps further! Thanks again !

Absolute therapy listening to how u express ur experiences Jethro. Life is a journey & sometimes we come to a crossroads in our lives with a decision to make (which way do I turn or do I keep going along the same path 🤔) life is full of uncertainty & the only way to find out whether we have made the right turn or taken the correct path is to follow our instincts & if that particular path isn’t so rosy we push on to another destination my friend life choices aren’t always easy but they are ours to make 👍😎

Hey Jethro, enjoyed the post. I think the thing that is so alluring about this channel is it's real sense of community; that sense of belonging to a group, being part of something. I think that everyone likes trips, reviews, information, routes and all the usual suspects; but that's something folk can do in and out of..a là distancé. You've created a surrogate family, and that's why you can spend an entire post on your hopes, dreams, fears and aspirations; and we care, and want to know that you're ok. Never forget that you created that! My humble advice to you, for what it's worth is simply this..We all do, exactly what we want to do! What do I mean by that!? Well simply that it's pointless to regret not doing something. If you had wanted to do something enough, then you would have done it; you'd have been draw to it, attracted to it, like steel to a magnet. Perhaps at that time, you either didn't want X enough; or perhaps Y was more of a priority. If Y hadn't happened then X would have; but we always do what we want to do. Its natural and organic. What in my humble opinion, is not natural or organic, is to try to recreate a situation that doesnt exist in the same form as your "idea" of it. It's an adventure, it's an experience; but it's something new, and cannot in any way resemble anything but the here and now. You've organically gotten to this point. You want something, or even think you do..so go for it; but please dont regret not doing it previously. You didnt want it then, like you want it now! Exciting times lay ahead, not to be tainted with regret or reproachment. But to be grabbed by the scruff of the neck and wrestled to the ground! Look after yourself Jethro, now more than ever, my friend! 😊
@JethroJessop
@JethroJessop Жыл бұрын
Thank you. I mostly agree but I think there is also an element of paralysis that sets in when life gets too comfortable or too complex. It won't be like that for everyone but I've never been good at making decisions and in a situation where where I want both X and Y I'll often end up with neither because I couldn't pick one over t'other. I wanted to go to Sweden a long time ago but I also wanted to feel financially secure and to be near my friends and family in the UK so I didn't really choose not to go, I simply didn't choose anything. Its a subtle distinction but a real one. And I do regret that. Maybe regret is the wrong word but I look back and wish present day me had been there to kick past me in the arse. But then I probably wouldn't have listened to my future self if I had ;) Whatever happened, I don't feel bad about it. I've basically lived a blessed life so far and have ended up here without really trying so I have nothing to be truly regretful about. I'm still healthy and I still have all kinds of dreams so here we go! On to the next bit. I'll squeeze some videos out of it somehow and report back as I go :) :)

@@JethroJessop I think we're all guilty of procrastination..but I still believe that if we really want something we will pursue it. Sometimes I think we're all also guilty of taking things for granted and not appreciating things until we've lost them. Then we wish we had appreciated X or Y more. But the reality is that we dont know that we didn't. If there are several things going on, then sometimes we have to spread ourselves out a bit. Just please dont beat yourself up about it buddy, it'll all work out in the end! Take care Jethro, you'll be fine😎
@JethroJessop
@JethroJessop Жыл бұрын
@@timporter8886 no beating up in the mix I can assure you. Regret is fine and part of life and learning I'd say. Self pity is another thing entirely and doesn't get you anywhere. I'm satisfied enough with where I am now that I can look back on past choices - good and bad - and see them as just steps in a journey. As you say, we can never know what would have been. Maybe if I'd made a "better" choice in the past I would have ended up stepping under a bus. Onwards and upwards 😁

It's a great country for sure. For the immediate future I'll be jumping back and forth like a blue arsed fly trying to get the most out of visitors allowance. If/when I find my ryrhm or get a more permanent visa then I'll be looking to explore so would be absolutely up for a meet. I shall keep you posted!

I'm liking more KZbinrs using more smooth jazz, awesome. I do systems for a government department - not so groovy but the money helps. But I'm using that to free me from the very system I serve. retirement soon and more time to travel and camp etc. We come to terms with what we need to do and eventually leave the comfort zone to get better lives. Go for it!

Having regular, decent income is the only good thing about having a "proper" job. I have always enjoyed the benefits of that but it also does tend to get you into a rut. You have a plan and that is the key thing. Its OK to work and earn and all that if it is moving towards some goal that you are in control of. Good look with the retirement! What will your first trip be once you are free?

Sadly not ☹️ The motivation is to spend time with Louise and Minna so I can't really spend great chunks of my very limited visitors visa days cycling back and forth. I wish I could, I don't like flying. Hopefully I will do a back and forth by bike in the future though

If you knew the history of my work and the type of bosses I had...you will come to now understand why I am an independent contractor :) I am my own Boss and make my own schedules. I am happy that you met someone you like and desire to have a future with her. I hope that when you move to sweden that many more blessings will come your way.

Thank you. I know exactly what you mean about being your own boss and the difference it makes to quality of life. Another full time position will be a possibility while I work out what I'm doing but in all honesty I prefer the freedom of contracting so we shall see what I can make happen :)

Jethro, great video mate, and yes go for it, Sweden Calls. We should not ever restrict ourselves due to the place of our origins as the world is your oyster. There's no fun in life if we all had a crystal ball and knew what laid ahead. Another thing I'd like to say is if you wrote and expressed yourself as you the way you speak, I reckon you'd be a great Author. Last but not least, I'd like to wish you and Louise and the little munchkin, all the very best in love, life and Happiness. All the best from a subscriber in Australia. 🤪

Thank you! You are absolutely right and it feels great to be shaking things up and seeing what falls out of it. I have messed around with writing in the past and I do really enjoy it but it is an incredibly time consuming pastime and so it somewhat fell by the wayside in favour of my other hobbies. I seem to prefer hobbies that require loads of time to get into ;) I am always thinking about some kind of written project though and if I don't manage to get myself another full time position maybe I'll have the time to look into it again 😬
