This time we're introducing Toni to the 80's comedy classic, "The Cannonball Run". After watching and enjoying Smokey and The Bandit, Toni wasn't quite ready to see that series end so we went with this which is very similar. I hadn't seen this in years but remembered really enjoying it as a kid!

Fun Fact: the giving the pep talk at the beginning of the race was Brock Yates. Brock was the editor if Car Driver msgazine. The originator of the real underground Cannoball race(s). He was also the first winner of the first Cannonball which he did in an ambulance.

The ambulance was the last race the first race he drove a Ferrari Daytona and the ambulance was the same one in the movie. But the ambulance Never finished the race. And it was lost to time But Travis Bell was friends with Brock and asked him about everything he knew about the Ambulance so he could build a exact match and Pamela Yates signed the ambulance and I think Burt did too. And you can watch people talk about the real cannonball on the KZbin channel VinWiki

A couple months after I first moved to Los Angeles in September 1991, some friends and I were cruising around town around midnight on a Friday night, and pulled up next to Dom Deluise at a red light on Santa Monica Blvd. He was in a sporty, black, stretch Mercedes. As we were all craning our necks to see if it was really him, he looks over at us, throws up his jazz hands like he does, and says through his open window in the way only he can, “Wanna racccce??” As soon as the light turned green, he rocketed ahead and left us in the dust, in disbelief of what had just happened. It was hilarious. I lived in LA for 25 years, and worked in Hollywood for more than half that time, partied all over Sunset Blvd and Hollywood with tons of celebrity sightings, but that one was still one of my favorites.

Very true! Most of the Burt Reynolds movies from that period: Hooper, the Smokey and the Bandit movies, and the Cannonball Run movies are all about being funny, and lighthearted entertainment...and since Burt liked stunt people, they were filled with real stunts too. I think they've held up pretty well and I still watch them regularly.

A few more famous faces from then: The guy in the car with Terry Bradshaw (the guy with the stutter) was Mel Tillis. He was a famous country singer who really did have a stutter when he talked. It went away when he sang. The guy in the grey van (the guy who held the van up while they changed the tire) was Joe Klecko. Klecko was a defensive lineman for the New York Jets before retiring and becoming an actor. Not many people remember, but Burt Reynolds was a football star at Florida State. His playing career got derailed by an injury and a car accident, so Burt went into acting. Throughout his career, Burt made room for ex-football players in his movies.

Tattle Tales host Bert Convey jumped out of the plane on the cycle. Country and western singer Mel Tillis was Bradshaw's partner. The Rat Packs Dean Martin and Sammy Davis Jr. are the priests. Racer girl in pink is Adrienne Barbeau. The other Tara Buckman. Doctor is Jack Elem. The sheikh is Jamie Farr, Corporal Klinger from MASH. The predecessor for this was, I believe, "It's a mad, mad, mad world", but that movie is about a treasure hunt/race to find hidden money, instead of winning money. It's a blast. Thanx guys.

"I'm Nikolas Van Helsing, professor of proctology and other related tendencies. A graduate of the University of Rangoon and assorted night classes at the Knoxville, Tennessee School of Faith Healing." "You may be a little overqualified for this job." Fun Fact: Theatrical movie debut of Rick Aviles. In And Out Award Fact: The bulk of the stars in this movie only worked for two or three days. That's My Jackie Fact: Jackie Chan made one of his first U.S. movie appearances. Inspired by director Hal Needham's notion of including bloopers during the closing credits, Chan began a tradition of doing the same in most of his movies, from this point onward. Blink And You'll Miss It Fact: At the end of the movie, during the big race to the finish, a black Trans Am appears. The driver of the car is seen in the foot race scene and Captain Chaos' (Dom Delo) dressing down scene. The driver is wearing Bandit's jacket worn by Burt Reynolds in Smokey And The Bandit II (1980). Director Cameos Fact: Director Hal Needham shows up in this movie four times. First as the EMT in the back of the ambulance, then as the voice of the cop in the speed trap ("Remember when we used to chase speeders?"), then as the truck driver who calls Roger Moore on the CB, and finally at the end of the bloopers. Historical Fact: The Cannonball Run started as the "Cannonball Baker Sea-To-Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash" and has since evolved into an unsanctioned speed record for driving across the United States. It is typically accepted to run from New York City's Red Ball Garage to the Portofino Hotel in Redondo Beach near Los Angeles, covering a distance of about 2,906 miles (4,677 km). As of October 2021, the overall record is 25 hours 39 minutes, with an average speed of 113 miles per hour (182 km/h), driven by Arne Toman and Doug Tabbutt. Automobile Enthusiast Fact: The Ferrari 308 used in the movie belonged to director Hal Needham. The ambulance used in the movie is the actual ambulance that director Hal Needham and screenwriter Brock Yates souped up and raced in the real Cannonball Run. It had been modified with a Landy built 440ci wedge engine , that made it go up to 145 miles per hour (233 kilometers per hour), and was equipped with four gas filler holes, so that the required 90 gallons (341 liters) could be pumped quickly. Needham and Yates didn't win the race (the transmission blew in Palm Springs, California) so Needham kept it in storage for several years, until the time came to make this film. After the movie, he gave it to a church charity, which raised a good deal of money auctioning it off. The 1964 Aston Martin DB5 driven by Roger Moore is the same Aston Martin used in Goldfinger (1964) when it was driven by Sean Connery. The iconic Bond car went through several owners before being purchased by car collector Anthony Pugliese III in 1986 for $250,000. The car was stolen from Pugliese's storage facility in 1997 and has never been recovered.

2nd Cannonball Run also features Burt Reynolds & Dom DeLuis (Captain Chaos), as well as several others from this one and some other big names from the same era. Highly recommend watching it as well.

One of my favorite movies. Rember Ohio might have a death sentence for speeding. LOL!! Brock Yates cameo in the movie said this and wrote this movie. He also has written several great car books. Hal Needham was the director and the guy in the back of the ambulance.

"Beauty"s real name Pamela isna salute to Brock Yate's wife, rederred to as "The Lady Pamela". Lady Pamela also pretended to be the "Senator's wife" in the real TransCon MedEvac ambulance in the Cannonball. And they really DID fool the police with the "cysts on the lungs" trick.

Inspired by the real Cannonball Baker Sea-to-shining-sea Memorial Trophy Dash, this was the "official" movie. Another Cannonball inspired movie, The Gumball Rally beat it to the box office and many consider it a better movie. There was a Cannonball Run 2 and Speed Zone, which is unofficially anogher sequel. There was also a low budgeg movie starring David Carradine simply called Cannonball.

DELIVERANCE THE MAN WHO LOVED CAT DANCING THE LONGEST YARD These are my top BURT REYNOLDS movies as far as I'm concerned. Also, THE LONGEST YARD should have NEVER been remade, it's a classic & classics should NEVER be remade. Would LOVE to see Toni's reactions...I have a huge feeling she'll be jumping out of her seat with all of these 😊

There is Cannonball 2, with many of the same actors and a movie called Speed Zone, often thought of as Cannonball 3. This 3rd movie is recast with John Candy and other legendary actors taking on the roles. Both are worth a watch, with hilarious hijinks ensuing.

There are quite a few cross country race movies from the 70s through the mid 80s. Cannonball Run has to be 1 of my 2 favorites, with the Gumball Rally being the other.

Omigosh, I haven't seen this in forever! 😅 Just something goofy to laugh at with a great cast with cameos from alot of notables. Yes, check out #2, it's better I think. Since you've done this, y'all gotta check out "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" & "Hooper". Then...if you're ready for super cliché spy films, add "Our Man Flint"!!😂

You need to watch Gumball Rally. These movies are based on a real race called The Cannonball Sea to Shining Sea Memorial Trophy Dash. A race from Connecticut to California in the quickest time. The last one I remember was 32 hours. Santa

This movie was basically a retelling of The Gumball Rally. I too haven’t seen it in so long. This movie has to have the biggest cast in movie history. A ton of famous people in it. Now you guys should watch Hooper.
