As for the second point, I believe that the lack of a central, controlling Muslim organisation is the reason why Islam has been pushed from the spotlight. It was the use of the huge power and influence the Vatican commanded to cover up child abuse that was almost as disgusting as the abuse itself. Islamic perpetrators are usually isolated incidents, it doesn't make it any less bad though.
