Well done Father. "You look for the splinter in your brother's eye when you have a plank in your own" means to me that a person is looking for what is wrong with a person constantly and doesn't love them. Everything is done out of some other motive than love of the person truly. I see this often in our ministries. The Pope was only paraphrasing what's already in the Catholic Catechism. I try to pull out common ground when ministering to others of all sorts of denominations and religions and there's plenty of common ground to be found...even if its the love of a cool drink of water. We've only scraped the first 1% of what Christian love can/could do for the world. May God continue to bless your ministry.

This talk is fully in accordance with Catholic tradition. Saint Ignatius of Loyola tells us to always try to interpret a person's words in the most charitable way possible, and that if we are unable to, we ought to ask the speaker what he understands by them, but many people automatically interpret Pope Francis' words in the most problematical way possible, and don't bother to check their context or how he understands them. And many Catholics have the heresy of Feeneyism.

Dear Fr Doyle, Thank you for your reflection on our Holy Father. I agree that we must always acknowledge and respect his office-and always be aware of who is listening to our “assessment” of his decisions and his teaching. I would like to add a bit to your analysis. The Holy Father always has a very complex audience when saying anything. He must always be aware that his audience is an entire world that looks to him to be the chief promoter, defender, and teacher of the Faith. Most people are not going to take the time to research the context of what he says. Unfortunate as it is, his audience, (which in this case includes those young people along with everyone else in the world), are only going to refer to those soundbites to know what the church teaches about the salvific efficacy of other religions. To put it simply, most people are busy going about their lives and frankly are not as nuanced as you are. I would say the pope has a great and grave responsibility to respect the capacity and reality of his entire audience, not just the direct few souls he may be addressing as if he were an anonymous man sitting in his parlor. I am certain that if our late Holy Father Benedict had had this same encounter, you would have spoken on your original topic for this video. All my best to you, Father Doyle, in Jesus through Mary.

Thank you Father Doyle. These are excellent points. When Jesus was born the angels sang: “Glory to God in the highest, and on earth peace among those with whom he is pleased!” God is pleased with those who do His will. His will is that we love our neighbour (like the good Samaritan did). Therefore, there may be those who have never heard about Jesus (or as in the case of the good Samaritan didn't follow Rabbinic Jewish law) but if they are loving their neighbour to the best of their ability then they are doing God's will and God is pleased with them. Sadly, by fighting among ourselves, and tearing down those who disagree with us, we are not practicing love and this sends the wrong message to the world. I pray for Pope Francis as well as for all the clergy every day. God bless you.

Well Father, I'm glad to see a good Irish priest like yourself, defending the Holy Father against these so-called, holier-than-thou, Catholic youtubers. They slag off Pope Francis every chance they get, in a most disrespectful way. You know who they are, so I'll say no more. Terrible carry on altogether! Viva Papa Francisco!

Everything which the Pope says in his informal addresses must always be interpreted in the light of the formal teaching authority of the Church (the “Magisterium”). There is no possibility of the Pope accidentally altering a formal teaching of the Church. So, since the condemnation of the errors of syncretism, indifferentism, universalism, etc form part of the formal Magisterium of the Church (they are condemned in the Syllabus of Errors by Pope Pius IX) they remain condemned whatever informal comments the Pope might make. So, the Pope’s comments are hedged around by the protection of the Magisterium. A simple summary of what the Church actually teaches is that a good Moslem (for example) may be “saved” but if he is saved it can only be by way of the grace of God leading him to live a righteous life - what is clear is that he cannot be saved by worshipping Allah, because Allah is a false god and the Muslim religion denies the divinity of Jesus Christ and therefore, in its teachings, is in the nature of Anti-Christ - as a religion it is incapable, by definition, of leading to salvation, because it denies Christ, the only way to find salvation. However, a Muslim can be saved despite (definitely not because of) his Muslim faith. The Church makes all of this very clear. Clearly, in the context of an inter faith dialogue, the Pope didn’t want to state, point blank, to, for example, a Muslim in his audience “you won’t get to Heaven by following Mohammad or by worshiping a false god, Allah, since your religion denies Christ, the only way to find salvation.” That would have been too blunt. Nevertheless, that is what the Church does teach. The Pope, with his natural courtesy and good manners, said that he could not say that his religion was better than any other religion. He couldn’t - but the Catholic Church does, so he is protected and hedged around by the Magisterium of the Church.

@GodsCottage
@GodsCottage Сағат бұрын
That is a valid question which I considered. before my talk. However the 4 religions that we present for the talk were Christians, Moslems, Hindus, and Sikhs, so it is reasonable to presume that Pope Francis was only talking of the main religions, and in particular the 4 religions that were actually present

@@GodsCottage Pope Francis said "all religions are a path to God" is it not reasonable to take the man at his word? By the way, Islam teaches that Jesus Christ did not die on the cross and substituted another man to die in his place. This blasphemous anti-Christ teaching is a pathway to God.......really?

Jesus said I am the Way; I am Truth and Life. No one can come to the Father except through me. Both Islam and Judaism reject Jesus Christ as the incarnation of God on earth. Both of these religions are therefore anti-Christ religions that cannot lead to God because they utterly reject the son of God. When Pope Francis told young people in Indonesia that all religions are a path to God he was teaching both heresy and blasphemy. St Paul put his life at risk attempting to convert pagans and Jews to Christianity...if all religions are a path to God, was he wasting his time?

Pope Francis has said repeatedly that we are saved only through Jesus, and that we are called to evangelize, but many people either don't notice, or they choose to ignore when he says that. Many Catholics seem to believe the heresy of Feeneyism.

@@matthewjoseph9897 Pope Francis teaches that attempting to convert another person to Catholicism is wrong and indeed nonsense. Therefore, according to Pope Francis, St Paul, who preached the Gospel to the Greeks was totally wrong in doing so. This is heresy and apostasy. By the way....when and where exactly has Pope Francis preached that belief in Jesus Christ as God incarnate and membership of his holy Catholic Church on earth is one's only hope of getting to heaven?

Matthew Joseph Prove it, he must be taken at his word, you have no common sense, any Muslim for example would have no reason to convert to the Catholic faith after listening to burgoglio. So your just wrong and there's no response you can offer that can change that reality.

St Paul was working hard to promote Jesus s teaching . Christianity was just being born as it were at that time. With the grace of God Christianity has spread throughout the world at this point . The Pope as leader of the Catholic Church is showing a tolerence and respect for other religions. Its an example of being a loving Christian. I doubt very much if Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ will turn a good and holy "non Christian" from Heaven Its not hisvm fault that he wasn't born into a Catholic family.

I am not satisfied with Pope Francis' explanation. He had an opportunity to spread the Gospel, but didn't, instead validating other faiths as viable routes for salvation. This is a liberal interpretation of Catholic doctrine on the matter, and at it's heart is this - that the Catholic Church is necessary for salvation and that the fullness of the means of salvation subsists within the Catholic Church. That's not to say that someone who isn't Catholic cannot be saved, but given the Catholic Church's necessity in salvation (the necessary means through which salvation is made available to humanity), surely it is incumbent of the representative of God here on earth to promote that? Pope Francis remarks are coming very close to making the Church seem irrelevant.

The Pope’s comments were in the nature of courtesy, diplomacy and good manners. Those hearing him would not have taken him seriously. No Muslim wants to arrive at the Lord God of Israel, the one true God and his only Son, Our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. It was all just good manners - nothing in the nature of setting out the formal position of the Magisterium of the Church.
