in the book that came out, there's a note mentioning that Teens had latched onto the smiling critters after the Catnap plush Fiasco, and were even swapping tapes of the show on college campuses. my theory is that playtime co heard about this, and decided to capitalize on it, making the Edgier Nightmare Critters to appeal to the teens. just look at Icky Licky, his scent is Coffee. Coffee doesn't seem like it would make much sense for a Child demographic, but would work if they were trying to appeal to Teens.

It'd be funny if teens actually liked the Nightmare Critters *less;* the SC are definitely the kind of creepy where the unintentionality makes it worse, while the NC don't really have that. It's like the Uncanny Valley effect, but instead of looking too human and un-human at the same time, it's that the SC look and act very cheerful and happy and normal but suffer from Black Hold Mouth/Eye Syndrome and are extremely creepy as a result, while the NC don't really have that (they all have teeth, which lessens the Black Hole Mouth, and their personalities are simply jerkish).

Each of the Nightmare Critters seems to be a dark, if not toxic, counterpart to each of the Smiling Critters. Feel free to correct me for any of the following: The easiest is with Picky and Maggie. Picky loves a well-balanced meal, while Maggie loves only sweets. Kickin is a good sport, while Icky is a poor sport. Dogday is cheery who loves to be around friends, while Baba is a distant loner. Hoppy is happily active, while Allister is lazy. Bobby is always cheering and supporting her friends, while Simon cheers and supports himself. Catnap prefers the night like Poe, except he accepts the daytime is a time to play while the night is a time to rest. Poe rejects the day altogether and stays up whenever they please. Crafty is soft-spoken and creates things to make her and her friends happy. Rabie is loud and creates gossip whether it's good or bad, true or false. Bubba is intelligent and is always reliable with his information. While Touille may not be dark or toxic, since the word "insightful" is surrounded by quotation marks, he may not be reliable. I like how Poe is (at least to me) a reference to Edgar Alan Poe. He wrote many poems that linger in the creepy/horror genre, including one about a crow! I loved reading his poems and I still do to this day, Poe is my favorite under the Nightmare Critters!

I might have a theory about Maggie, since she’s an aquatic enemy yes we might see her in the sewers but I don’t think we’ll be chased by her first. Now in chapter 3 we met picky piggy who was obviously a cannabal, ate some of the smiling critters and she didn’t, “die” after the cardboard cutout, we might be chased by her in the sewers then when were stuck Maggie comes up out of the water and drags picky piggy in and eating her, since one Maggie likes stuff like meat, or spoiled food, and plus piggy might be a big fat enemy. So it wouldn’t surprise me if Maggie saw piggy and ate her as dinner. But hey that’s just a theory!

Would also go along the fact now Catnap's gone, the toys may've gone berserk and truly turned the place into a kill or be killed carnage, because Catnap made sure to keep toys on check with his sleeping gas, with him out, there's nothing stopping everyone for going after each other's throats, and its also possible Kissy wasn't attacked by the Prototype or his minions, but rather by rogue toys that tried to go for an easy kill, serving as prescedent that from this point onwards we really must watch our backs, because it could be the second coming of the hour of joy, except this time its a free for all

I am now 100% certain that the Smiling Critters and the Nightmare Critters represent the Heavenly Virtues and Evil Thoughts/Deadly Sins respectively. Bobby Bearhug, in a roundabout way seems to represent Chastity since she embodies the friendship side of love rather than the romantic side. Bubba Elephant seems to represent Diligence due to his studious nature. CraftyCorn represents Generosity due to her desire to share her art with everyone. DogDay represents Kindness due to him stepping up to care for everyone as their leader. Hoppy Hopscotch represents Patience since she is willing to slow down to let her friends keep up with her. KickinChicken represents Humility since he reacts to being knocked down by simply picking himself back up and getting back into the game. PickyPiggy represents Temperance due to her insistence on practicing a healthy diet. Originally, I thought CatNap was excluded from the list to symbolize his removal from the group. But going by what we see in both his cartoon and bigger body incarnations, I now believe that he represents Zealotry and its ability to corrupt these otherwise good virtues. Babba Chops represents Despair due to her depressed, loner nature. Icky Licky represents Pride due to his refusal to accept defeat. Rabie Baby seems to represent Envy due to her need to learn everyone's secrets. Allister Gator represents Sloth due to his lazy nature. Simon Smoke represents Vainglory for being a braggart.(And yes, I know that that's basically the same thing as Pride but it's listed as a separate sin. Go figure.) Poe represents Wrath for being angry for no reason. Touille represents Greed for constantly collecting junk. Maggie Mako represents Gluttony for being obsessed with food.

I thought that the Nightmare Critters were villains of the Smiling Critters show, like how He-Man has Skeletor, Powerpuff girls have Mojo Jojo, and to go off some newer shows, how PJ Masks, Luna Girl, Night Ninja, and Romeo, most kids shows have some sort of bad guy that tries to mess up life for the kids.

I think they’re more supposed to be like how the PPG have the RRB and other MCs have their evil doppelgangers. Just mean counterparts or dark reflections of the good guys. But in terms of how they are vs the smiling critters, unless new info was given, I’m still of the belief they were supposed to be antags for the Smiling Critters

Hard to tell what Poe is opposite of since doesn't Dog day already have an Opposite with Catnap? Wait are we getting a Sanders sides situation with Catnap formerly being Nightmare Critter, but then went to the Smiling Critters?! Probably not, but would make for funny comics

Touille could be “Ollie” from chapter 3. His description says “If you ever need someone to provide "insightful" commentary or some random piece of junk, Touille is your guy.” And with how much information Ollie had to help in chapter 3, along with the many keys he gave us (could’ve found it while tunneling in trash), I wouldn’t be surprised to see that Ollie and Touille are potentially one in the same.

Each Nightmare critter corresponds to a positive influence Smiling Critter. Maggie Mako (Picky Piggy), Poe (Crafty Corn) and Allister Gator (Kickin Chicken) are my favorites for design and personality concepts. There are also some pretty crazy ideas going around for how each of them could test the player in a nightmarish encounter in the labs/the depths of Playtime CO’s filthy underbelly. Thank you for covering all of them at once SHB. I can’t wait for the next ch 4 announcements.

Am I the only one who thinks it’s repetitive for them to release new critters after they were the focus of last chapter? I understand that they are different ones but for their to randomly be 8 new ones with no hint of them in the last chapter is makes it seem like they just threw some new ones together to try and create extra hype or revenue based off of chapter 3. I feel like the reason why PP is so successful in its run is because of the new and different characters they introduced in each chapter.. so this seems kinda like a drawback really

It does happen in some games, like people create new characters as they make the story, but release chapters without completing their planning. Examples are Alice Angel in Bendy and the Ink Machine, since there was no hint at her existing in the first chapter, same for the Butcher Gang. Then obviously there were so many animatronics created in FNAF, but there were never really any hints to anyone but the main five characters in the first game.

I think the Nightmares Critters could be a loose reference to (some?) the Seven Deadly Sins, which are pride, greed, wrath, envy, lust, gluttony and sloth. Icky Licky or Simon Smoke could resemble pride, Rabie Baby envy, Allister Gator sloth and Maggie Mako gluttony. I don't know what Poe, Touille or Baba Chops could be.
