I've been waiting for this since I applied for accommodation back in April! I gave up looking for Exeter videos because there really weren't any and I used the virtual room tour online anyway, and most things online were for en suite rooms 😕 Thanks so much for uploading this!

Yeah that's what I found too when looking up accommodations beforehand! Glad I could help :)

Thank you for making this! Old Lafrowda rooms are a lot more spacious than I had previously thought. Not sure if you would know, but is the kitchen/desk space very different at St German's/Rowe?
@PoppyBarr8 жыл бұрын
Yeah I was worried when I first moved but honestly there is enough room for everything! I'm not certain about st Germans and Rowe house but I'm pretty sure less people share their flats so the kitchen is a little smaller but more modern (in Rowe house at least). Not sure about desk size but I think all accommodations have pretty large desks!

I'm off to uni in September, was wondering if you had any tips or tricks for moving into halls? I'm going to be sharing with slightly fewer people than you (7-9), so any wise words on living with strangers would be much appreciated x
@PoppyBarr8 жыл бұрын
I think I may make a whole video on this but if I don't I would say my main advice is just not to over think it too much... I was so worried before I went (to the point I almost didn't go!) and you really don't need to be! Keep in mind everyone is in the exact same position and everyone is so open to meeting new people that making friends is really easy. Hope this helps! :)

Loved this video! Thinking of applying to Exeter for 2017 entry :) I'm curious to know how did you find student life being vegan, good places to eat in Exeter etc? X
@PoppyBarr8 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Exeter is actually quite good for vegan food- there's an entirely vegetarian cafe called 'The Plant Cafe' which has vegan cakes (and is on deliveroo!) but it's not too great for vegan savoury things. My favourite cafe is 'The Glorious Art House' which has almond milk and great vegan banana bread. For dinners I like 'The Old Firehouse', which is such a lovely pub and has huge pizzas with vegan cheese! Hope this helped :)

Hi Poppy, may I ask if I will have to move out of my accommodation at the end of every semester? I will be living in self-catered at Birks Grange Village. I ask this because during the visit day in February the lecturer told us that this was likely to happen? Thank you for your helpful video though :)
@PoppyBarr8 жыл бұрын
Hi! As far as I'm aware no self-catered accommodation has to move out throughout the year, although I'm pretty sure catered do! If you're contract is 40-42 weeks then you'll be staying there all year round :) Hope this helps!

Your video was very helpful ! I have 2 questions: 1)How is the night life in exeter? and 2)Is there any way i can be sure that me and my best friend will live on the same flat?
@PoppyBarr7 жыл бұрын
Thank you! The night life isn't crazy but there's enough places and it's definitely not awful. There is no way to guarantee you'll be with your friends but there might be somewhere when you're filling out your application that you can mention it... I wouldn't worry though- I came to uni with a friend but in different flats and it was way better than being together as it forced me to make more friends! Also we ended up living together in second year with people from both our halls so it worked out great :))
@asha7408 жыл бұрын
hi again, on studentroom I'm seeing a lot of discussion on lafrowda/st Germans and Rowe house regarding social life and all that, is lafrowda really that more social than the rest? -I'm also hearing about "old lafrowda" and "new lafrowda" what are they talking about? thanks!!!!
@PoppyBarr8 жыл бұрын
Old lafrowda is standard lafrowda and new lafrowda is en suite, so this accommodation is considered "old lafrowda"! I'm not sure whether I'd say lafrowda is more social than the rest because i reckon it always depends on the flat you're put in, however theres more people in each flat (usually 11-12) than most of the other accommodations which i feel like always makes it a bit more social than if you were in a smaller group! Hope that made some sense haha

Hi, I'm really interested in Exeter Uni and so this video was really helpful! I've still got a year left of school but I'm not really a big drinker or party person and so I'm really worried about freshers week and the drinking side of uni in general. I'm really worried people will either force me into drinking or not want to be friends with me because of jt. Any advice?
@PoppyBarr8 жыл бұрын
I'm not going to lie and say first year (or freshers at least) isn't drinking orientated... However I wouldn't worry about this in the slightest! There are always people who don't drink and I've not witnessed it ever be an issue or anyone really caring about it. The great thing about uni is that there is so many opportunities to get involved in groups of different people so you'll always meet people similar to you! One of my flat mates didn't drink and was probably the most sociable out of all of us, she wasn't excluded from parties etc, and still was great friends with everyone in the flat. Sorry for such a long reply haha, but basically don't worry about it... People may be jokey about drinking but honestly they're more concerned about what they're doing to really care whether you drink or not! Hope this helps ☺️

@lucytaylor78318 жыл бұрын
Hey, great video! I will be starting at Exeter in 2017 and I am really struggling to decide between old and new Lafrowda- I'm not too bothered about sharing toilets and showers etc, its more to do with the number of people you share with. Did you find 11 a good number so share with? (And what was the boy/girl split?) Is it good because you have more choice of people and therefore will definitely find people you get along with, or did having such a large number mean that people split off into groups? I know new Lafrowda has 7 people sharing and I don't know which one to pick so would be really grateful for your advice! xx
@PoppyBarr8 жыл бұрын
I honestly loved having 11 people but I think it all varies depending on who you get put with! We had 5 boys and 6 girls, so it was pretty balanced, and all got on really well. I personally think 11/12 is the perfect number... anymore and i feel like it would be too overwhelming, but i feel like any less makes it harder to have someone you are guaranteed to get on with! Either way, people will probably split off into groups a little because everyone is so different so it's nice to have a few extra people i think :) There were 7 of us in my flat who were really close which was nice! Hope this helps xx
@lucytaylor78318 жыл бұрын
Poppy Barr sounds good! Did you move in with people in your halls flat in your second year? I am kinda leaning towards old lafrowda after your comments, it seems very chilled- did you mix with other flats a lot? I am currently on a gap year so it would be cool to share with some other people who have also had a year out :) Were there any other factors that made you choose old lafrowda over new lafrowda? Thank you all your help xx
@PoppyBarr8 жыл бұрын
I had a friend from home at uni so my flat and hers made friends quite quickly, and now i am living with 6 people from both my flat and hers! We had 2 fourth year students, and 3 who had had a gap year so it was a good mix. Honestly, when I actually chose old lafrowda, it was mainly because of the cost... but having been to both I wouldn't change it even if i could afford new lafrowda :) xx
@lucytaylor78318 жыл бұрын
Poppy Barr Cost is definitely a consideration for me too! I know you can't generalise too much, but Exeter is kind of known for having some rah people- did you find that people in old lafrowda are more 'normal' and down to earth? I know it's a stereotype but I just wondered because old is quite a bit cheaper than the others :) thank you so much for answering my questions! Xx
@PoppyBarr8 жыл бұрын
Everyone I met from old lafrowda were lovely, but tbh you'll find rah people everywhere in Exeter haha! Everyone in old lafrowda has a sort of old lafrowda pride (because everyone is a bit judgey of the cheaper accommodations), which I loved and it meant you would always bond with people if you met someone from old lafrowda! xx
@anna.h56168 жыл бұрын
Hi Poppy, I'm hoping to go to Exeter this September and the deadline for applying for accommodation is this Sunday (oops.) I found your video after I realised the price difference between lafrowda standard and lafrowda ensuite. Do you think it is worth it to pay £38 for an ensuite and a larger kitchen. The thought of having to share a bathroom is mildly terrifying to me but I don't know if I can justify that much extra money for the bathroom? I would really appreciate your advice because I'm kind of panicking, haha! Thankyou x
@PoppyBarr8 жыл бұрын
I personally don't think it's worth it but it's really a personal choice! The shared bathrooms situation also terrified me but is honestly fine and I had no problems with it when I was actually there... it also makes it easier when people come round (for example, for a party) as people don't need to go in and out of bedrooms! I wouldn't have wanted to live anywhere else, and things like kitchen size you don't even notice :)

Your video, is good, but in order to get a better look to them, try to get an image stabilisation for your camera- mount so, your shots look clean instead of being a bit wobbly.

Congrats on your offer!! I mainly know about the stereotypes of Holland Hall but honestly there's going to be a mix of people in all accommodations so I can't really tell you much about the people! The accommodation is lovely though, much more luxurious than what you see in this video haha

I was offered a 'budget room' in Moberly House - Birks Grange....... and I am not preparing to accept that offer. People say that hall is like prison, is that true ??? >口< I don't actually understand what a 'budget room' is.....
@PoppyBarr8 жыл бұрын
I've not actually been myself but it's definitely one of the more rundown accommodations (lots of people sharing bathrooms, lack of carpet etc haha)! But I don't think that necessarily makes it a bad thing... People at moberly seem to embrace it and never have that many problems with it. Where I lived was also one of the cheapest halls which people described as a prison but I loved it! It's really just whatever is going to work best for you ☺️

is it true living in lafrowda can get noisy because it's near the clubs and it's known for its social life?
@PoppyBarr8 жыл бұрын

Hi Poppy- I have just been offered Lafrowda Block Q for accommodation this September: I know you said in your video that you are in Block R, so was this near to you and in a good location? I also specified that I wanted a large flat, do you know if all Block Q flats are 11/12 people? Thank you :)
@PoppyBarr7 жыл бұрын
Lucy Taylor block Q and R actually share a building so you're in the exact place I was! Super good location as it's a 5 minute walk to the middle of campus, 1 minute from the campus shop and the campus club (it's not too noisy if you're not into going out, would only possibly be disturbed on a Saturday) and about 15 minutes from town. Pretty sure Q was identical to R so will probably have 11 people! Hope this helps 😊

Hey hope this is okay I have a few questions because I firmed Exeter so hopefully going this year :) - For accommodation are there specific places for specific courses? I'm worried I'll end up somewhere too far from my teaching campus! - Did you do mixed halls or same sex? Thank you :)
@asha7408 жыл бұрын
sorry not sure I caught on in the video, is this En suite or shared?
@philipperoubert61448 жыл бұрын
This is most probably shared, as you can't see a bathroom (and only the sink), and I think, based on my research, the shared rooms have bricky walls? But it needs to be confirmed. I also firmed Exeter, good luck to you :)
@PoppyBarr8 жыл бұрын
Halls aren't divided by courses so you'll be mixed but generally they're quite good at giving you your first choice accommodation, so make sure you choose the campus you'll be on! I'm in mixed halls and this is standard lafrowda so shared bathrooms :)

Congrats on firming Exeter!! It's honestly not something I've noticed too much which I feel like must be a good thing as the uni doesn't stand out as just being one group of people. Universities are so much bigger than high schools, there is always going to be much more diversity (in every aspect!) so I really wouldn't worry about it! I also feel like people are much more open so fitting in is much less of an issue at uni. Hope this helps!
