Voguing has been drifting in and out of popular culture for decades. And while people often credit Madonna as a voguing pioneer, this dance movement has an incredibly rich history that long predates the queen of pop. Hannah spent a day with Derek Auguste aka "Jamel Prodigy" to learn what this iconic dance movement really stands for and why we should always remember that its true roots lie in the black and Latino LGBTQ community.

I'm really excited to comment this video because... OMG, it was a lot of good informations about the scene of Voguing that I'm still processing every second of it! Hannah, I have to search more about you because I didn't know that you are a DJ and that's amazing - I don't wanna you think that I'm gonna steal the women DJ's speech of being a woman between the guys because all I wanna to say right now is that WOMEN and LGBTQI+ communities have to get in on every space of this world, telling to the societies that 'It's a Man's Man's Man's World' is just a good song from the last century. I have to send a lot of great feelings to Jamel Prodigy because, again, OMG... Voguing it's not just a club style of dancing (maybe, I started voguing on a club, doing random movements - haha) a way of living, to express the BLACK and LGBTQI+ comunities since decades ago. Then, I have to say thank you, thank you, thank you for this small video that shows a lot o his/herstory, culture, life's experience and resistance of the WOMEN, BLACK and LGBTQI+ communities that lived and are living the underground scene.

Voguing actually started in Rikers Island. Madonna never claimed to invent the dance, she brought it to light and popular culture very respectfully by hiring dancers from the voguing scene. It was just one song and she helped these kids when no one would. I hate how she always gets shit even this video starts with - she didn't invent voguing - when she never claimed shit in the first place nor has anyone credited her with it ever. What people don't do though is crediting Madonna enough for doing so much for the scene.

The makers of this video actually have poor knowledge of Madonna's role in Voguging. She never claimed to invent the dance, nor did she appropriate it. Madonna was looked after by the LGBT community in New York during the 80s, she would regularly visit dance clubs and many of her closest friends died during the AIDS epidemic. When she brought out the song Vogue, she gave a platform to actual dancers from the club and ballroom scene to show their culture to the world. They were never given this opportunity before. But most importantly, these were people who were shunned by society due to the homophobia of the time and the stigma around AIDS. She gave them a chance and celebrated them. It's also terrible to show the clip of her Vogue performance at the MTV awards in 1990 as if it were an example of appropriation. That performance was one of the most iconic MTV performances of all time and a homage to the ballroom scene. Actual dancers from New York ballrooms were on that stage and performed with her on the biggest music channel in the world. Madonna can rightly be bashed for a lot of things but her part in the story of Voguing and her consistent support for the LGBT community cannot be faulted. This is pretty basic music knowledge and this video is way off the mark.
