Hey Lord X, I just wanted to give you a positive response to what you said at the end of the episode,stating that you had enough games for at least 2 more of these.🎉 I'm loving this topic and if you decide to do 29 more on this topic, I'd be there, if humanly possible. So congratulations on another one of those"original episode ideas" you're good at, like I mentioned to you previously. Nice

I recall the GameBoy version of MK2 being quite an impressive port of the game. It was miles better than the first game. Highly playable and contained the bare essentials that made the game so popular.

Thank you for putting effort into your descriptions, especially including the link to part 1. So many KZbinrs just don’t take the time, and it’s really helpful for a lot of us. (Especially since I missed part 1!)

The GameBoy port of the first Samurai Shodown is quite good. It has the full roster of the original, new story, intro cinematics for every character, and three bonus characters. The Courier, the Judge, and Amakusa, the game's final boss.

The Takara fighting titles thought smart. They sacrificed the detail of the bigger versions in favor of a charming chibi style which allowed more characters and faster gameplay to be achieved. I appreciate those efforts more and more as I think about it compared to the other attempts to try to mimic the big style on hardware that clearly couldn't support it.

I was unfortunate enough to own Street Fighter 2 on the C64 back in the day. The best thing about it was probably the presentation box, but the game was appalling, and it was ludicrously expensive. Nonetheless I was delighted to have it, and it tied me over to the following Christmas when I got my megadrive. Would love to see you cover it in a future episode.
@ralang999Ай бұрын
The C64 Shinobi port is indeed excellent! plays very close to the arcade version and has the actual epilogue screen that the SMS version didn't. One of my fave C64 ports. The C64 port of Alien Syndrome is great too!

I think it's funny you mentioned Columns, cause I just learned about it being ported to the Super Famicom yesterday. I was organizing my SNES roms on my computer when I noticed I had Columns in my SNES folder. I thought it was weird that I had that there. So I double checked on the wikipedia and sure enough it was on the list. I know Sega has had some of their games ported to Nintendo systems before but to me I think it's a little weird seeing Columns on the SFC. But hey you learn something new everyday, right? 🤷♂️

Here’s in interesting one: Heroes of Might and Magic 2+3 for Gameboy Color. Outside some menu clunk from using a controller it’s a fine port of the PC strategy game. Impressive for the handheld of the time.

Nuce topic! This also proves that porting games to less powerful hardware successfully requires both Dev skills and creativity. But when it is well done, it can be quite impressive.

For the C64, take a look at Ghosts n Goblins Arcade. The “arcade” bit is important as whilst the original was pretty good for the time, the “Arcade” version enhances everything showing what the hardware is really capable of in the right hands.
@danielespeziari5545Ай бұрын
I actually really like Alien Syndrome on the Master System. Admittedly I haven't played any other version, but on its own it's playable and quite addictive, and it has an ominous soundtrack that fits the game perfectly. I also don't see a problem in the fact that it scrolls from screen to screen
@UltimateGamerCCАй бұрын
agreed, i guess SLX just doesnt like when it veers too far away from the Arcade's playstyle.
@lhfirexАй бұрын
It's not the kind of smooth arcade action the original has, so it feels like a bad port in comparison. Probably not actually a bad game (it didn't look bad in the video) but I can see why he didn't like its removal of some core elements of the arcade version.

I'd say Virtua Tennis GBA has more in common with traditional 2D tennis games like Super Tennis on SNES and Mario Tennis on N64. Virtua Tennis on DC and arcade on the other hand was a game-changer for the tennis genre. The players and the ball had huge momentum and the powerful volleys and groundstrokes made older tennis games look pedestrian.

I think the Amiga is a very interesting platform to check ports from arcades and other consoles, as well as from other computers. There are even some 8-bit games that have upgraded visuals such as Simpsons: Bart vs the World. While, in general many ports aren't great, the ones that are good, are really interesting. I'd extend the above to DOS PC games as well, the same applies there.

I highly recommend the RoboCop vs Terminator comic book from 1992 that the video games fellows rather loosely. It’s written by Frank Miller at the height of his ability’s, the guy who killed it with Dark Knight Returns and Man without fear. It really feels like the perfect mix of the original movies in both series, none of the sequel blot.

Donkey Kong Land 2 on OG Game Boy This game has no rights to be this good on the handheld. Its kind of a port of Donkey Kong Country 2, but with new levels. They took the screen size and controls into account when designing the levels. I enjoyed this so much, that I completed it to 102% as well. Note: The first game Donkey Kong Land isn't good and not recommended by me. And for DKL 3, I never played it. But there is a Japanese version of DKL 3 with colors too.
@piratebear3126Ай бұрын
DKL 3 is the same as DKL 2 with having most of its levels in tact, and is a surprisingly good DKC 3 port even with the western OG Gameboy version. DKL 1 isn’t bad, but it suffers from the muddy graphics blending together. Much better on a system that can do separate sprite and background colors. Definitely weakest of the trilogy.

The Amiga version of Shadow Dancer really was very good. I remember getting it at the time and was so pleased at how it turned out. Of course it couldn't compete with the brilliant arcade version, but it got so much right. I only really wished it somehow had the parallax, but other than that, no complaints here. You rarely hear much praise for many Amiga ports of arcade games and this was a superb rarity.

Smashing drive was a real shocker to see on the GBA as the system wasn't even built for 3D like its 6th gen consoles. Yet it manages to replicate not only the feel but also all the content is present. Even the hilariously bad music is accounted for in all its unintelligible glory.

I was amezed that sega released colums on the snes, their competitor’s console. But i guess by that time in 1998 the 16bit console wars were already over and sega had already give up on their genesis and focus more on their dreamcast . They also released a few games on the gameboycolor in 2000 but by that time the gamegear was already dead (!) and sega probably gave up on it back in 1997. So love it or hate it but it’s no surprise that sega saw some bread in putting their games on it’s competitor’s hardware. What is surprising is however that sonic the hedge hog did appear on the gba. Also sega greatest arcade hits did appear on gba. But am also amezed that art of fighting did appear on the snes etc…

I have played all the Adventure Island games and New Adventure Island is also one of my favorites! I would have loved to see an SNES port of it! It should have been the true "Super Adventure Island"! I also am very confused as to why Sega would have ported Columns to the SNES in 1999? It just seems so random. Sega always has made some bizarre decisions, I guess.

I dunno if Sega developed games on the Xbox after Dreamcast died count, but there's plenty there to explore if it does. I'm talking the stuff that was in development and mid cycle they were like hey, we need you to port this and scrap that. PC ports on consoles from the old era are always a good one to throw out there, those are pretty unexpected. I remember when I was in a GameXchange like a decade ago and found the SNES Wing Commander game along with the add on game. I didn't know those existed on snes, I thought they were PC games only.
@JGreen-le8xxАй бұрын
One thing Sega did that made no sense especially when its their IPs. The Colecovision and SG1000 are almost identical hardware. So when Zaxxon and Congo Bongo came out on Coleco they were fantastic ports, but on the SG were terrible. Why would you not port the already superior port to your hardware ESPECIALLY to show off its capabilities, instead of garbage.
@lazarushernandez5827Ай бұрын
I guess it has to do with the talent of the programmer(s) doing the port. Zaxxon doesn't look to far off from the Colecovision version, but Congo Bongo...yeah it looks like they tried to make the first level of Donkey Kong on the SG1000 instead of Congo Bongo. You would think that they'd just have the team that made the arcade versions handle the home ports at Sega...🤔

Only way to do MK2 right on those 8 bit systems is to focus on the gameplay and have small sprites. Large characters cannot be represented with sprites unless you only draw some parts of them every frame, meaning major flickering, so they're using tiles instead, and this is why it's moving in a choppy manner, as those tiles can only be placed at 8x multiples of coordinates (or 16). For the 3rd part, maybe have a look at "Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo for C64/C128" => that's actually the way they should have handled MK2 on 8bit, using SD characters.
