Miracle whip is not mayonnaise and does not claim to be. It is salad dressing. I grew up with Miracle whip but as an adult I discovered mayo and there are certain things I have to have mayo with and certain things I have to have miracle whip with. I keep both in my fridge. I use Kirkland Real Mayonnaise.

@@melissacooper4282 Miracle Whip doesn't claim to be mayonnaise or a substitute -- pragmatically, it can be used in some recipes as a mayo replacement, but it is really a different product. It is like saying tomato sauce and marinara are the same. The marinara has a lot of flavors left out of the plain tomato sauce.

@@guycoburn1633 Miracle whip is great and yes it's a different product sorta. Though you kinda lose it in your second paragraph. Marinara IS tomato sauce there IS not difference EXCEPT it's a tomato sauce that EXCLUDES some ingredients traditionally in the sauce. It's in the tomato sauce family. In fact there is like 20 different types. However it was marketed as heavily a substitute and if they could they would name is mayonnaise because it's effectively the same thing. That doesn't mean it's the same exactly, or doesn't have differences, and may not meet the EXACT definition, but they lost that battle so don't claim it to be mayo, regardless most condiments follow certain traditions. Jars/bottles used for 1 condiment could really be used for most condiments, but they differentiate, and packaging differentiates as well, as well as how you extract the product. Miracle whip specifically(As do other mayo substitutes) copy the exact packaging trends, the labeling, colour schemes etc. They need to make it appear as much like mayo as possible, without calling it mayo(Because they legally can't). More over depending on the country they may be able to claim it actually is. I love miracle whip and mayo, generally like miracle whip but it is slightly different taste profile to traditional mayo being slightly more sour and consistency is slightly different.

Bill Pierce Thank you for your observation. It says right on the bottle that it is salad dressing- not mayonnaise. Personally, I prefer Miracle Whip on most sandwiches instead of mayonnaise- which lends to be a little too bitter for my taste. And, at the end of the day, it is a question of taste. Of personal taste. Still, for me and my circle, it is a frequent topic for a good natured debate- that along with how to pronounce the word pecan......

Exactly. Coleslaw, e. g., made with mayonnaise usually requires some sugar and seasonings which are already in Miracle Whip. Some people also like it as a sandwich spread because it's not as bland as most brands of "mayo". If you're a food snob who disdains Miracle Whip because it isn't mayonnaise, why would any commercial "mayo" be an acceptable substitute for the real thing? It's not that hard to make when you need it.

We always used Miracle Whip when I was a kid. I like mayo better, but I still use Miracle Whip for things like cole slaw or potato salad. What was really bad was Spin Blend. My grandma used that and it was horrible. My other grandma used to make lime jello with shredded cabbage, carrots and celery in it. She topped it with Miracle Whip. Sounds weird, but it's good and I still like it.

@@swingman5635 I recognize that it would be an acquired taste. If I came up on it now without ever having it, I'm sure I'd think it was the weirdest thing ever. I had a friend whose family used to eat bologna sandwiches with peanut butter and jelly. Makes me gag just to imagine it, but she loved it and swore it was the greatest thing ever. I knew a guy who grew up poor and the thing he thought was greatest in the world was Bisquick dumplings with melted Velveeta poured over. I think it has more to do with memories than it being all that good. LOL

I grew up in New England but our family has ALWAYS been a Best Foods/Hellman’s mayonnaise family. My family moved from California to. Connecticut in 1959 and I came along two years later, my mom was confused about Hellman’s at first but the label looked just like the Best Foods label,then she found out they were the same product. 🙂

By the 1920s, the California Postum Foods company (later re-named Best Foods) had their own mayonnaise brand on the West Coast. Both mayonaise brands were very popular in their own respective geographic regions. In 1927, Postum Foods bought Hellmann’s. However, the East Coast customers had such a strong brand loyalty to the well-established Hellmann’s brand name that the merged company decided to keep the Hellmann’s name, on the East Coast, rather than introduce the East Coast to the unknown name of Postum. It has stayed that way ever since, except that, on the West Coast, Postum Foods became Best Foods. Apparently, since 1927, the recipes of the two mayonnaise brands have gradually evolved so that the merged company now has the same shared mayonnaise recipe with the two different regional names.

No Miracle Whip isn't Mayo and it's not salad dressing either, it's almost salad dressing. It still needs vinegar and some spices before it's salad dressing, it's just a starter for salad dressing to be adjusted to your taste depending on what kind of salad your making. Mayo and Miracle Whip are like Coke & Pepsi, Coke is soda and Pissy Cola is just sugar water and caramel color.

All brands took a big hit in flavor whenever they switched from glass to plastic jars I can not remember what year the switch happened maybe in the 70'S but plastic jars come from the store tasting old I remember glass jars staying good at least a year after purchase, I am 58 years old just little past my "use by date"

Totally agree. You might not have realized that switching from glass to plastic jars required modifying their recipes. The ubiquitous use of canola oil was another serious blow to taste & longevity, it starts getting rancid tasting as soon as it's opened & sometimes even before opening. Plastic containers have ruined taste of food.

I grew up on Miracle Whip. It’s all my Mom ever bought. As an adult, there are still some things that I prefer with Miracle Whip, and some things I like with them mixed or with mayonnaise alone. I keep both in my refrigerator. I have been happy with Hellman’s, Duke’s, or Blue Plate in no particular order. The scathing review was both childish and downright sinister. You could try being a little (or even a lot) nicer. We all have different perceptions of what is good or bad to us. There are a lot of your opinions that I absolutely do not agree with. Rather than trying to stomp on and crush a product that you don’t like, say something like “I feel this product is too ___, or not enough ____. For those reasons I put it at the bottom of my list. I can’t give this video a thumbs up because it is just too caustic. Tone down the battery acid and maybe you’ll get a thumbs up.

If you were to read the label you would see Miracle Whip is a salad dressing. Literally an oil and vinegar dressing in a stabilized form. Probably intended for use on salad like potato salad, macaroni salad, chicken salad, or other concoctions where oil and vinegar would not really stick nor bind the ingredients together. Actually quite tasty and very popular.

Fun fact. Miracle Whip shouldn't even be on this list because it ISN'T Mayonnaise. Your research team needs a talking to. Or maybe to actually do ....Research. Also Mayonnaise is bland. How is choosing 'bland' doing my taste buds a favor? You don't need to tell people that like Miracle Whip about Mayonnaise. When we eat at a sandwich shop or burger joint there's usually Mayonnaise on what we're eating. And yet we still buy Miracle Whip. I also had equal access to Mayonnaise and Miracle Whip while growing up as Mom bought both.

I agree. It shouldn't be compared here as it isn't mayo and doesn't pretend to be. When I was a kid I remember people making salad dressings that were cooked. I'm trying to find some of those recipes because out of curiousity I'd like to try making some and seeing what it tastes like. My grandma used to make 1000 island dressing from a cooked base.

Being a BiCoastal all of my Life, it was Hellmans/Best Foods all the way. Incredibly, BLUE PLATE, to my shock, displaced them. After 60+ years! 🤯Yep, that egg power packed, creaminess toppled me right over. In everything, the Blue Plate really stands out. Give it a try! 💯😁👍

I grew up with Miracle Whip, my Dad would NOT buy anything else. While today, I prefer Dukes (or even the Walmart Brand Mayo), I still go back to Miracle Whip for my Pasta Salads, Egg Salad/Devil Eggs. There's no beating that oddly strong taste that Miracle Whip has! But for a sandwich, real mayo is the only way to go!

I loved Hellman’s until some enlightened soul introduced me to Duke’s. That tang is why it’s such a great sandwich spread. Bonus, more flavor means you can get by with a thinner schmear and save a few calories.

I have made my own mayonnaise and it has been always wonderful and tasty for sandwiches and salads both. I can use onion powder , garlic powder, also add a little paprika or rosemary depending what I be making at that time. But when I was a kid on the farm mom had Miracle Whip set for us on the table. Those are my two favourites to use.

When you (PICKED) on miracle whip right of the bat, I knew there must be some under the table compensation. Miracle Whip has the best flavor for the foods my wife puts it in. It is NOT MAYONNAISE, it is Salad Dressing. There is a difference. There is also RANCH Dressing that works well in some foods as well.

I grew up on MIRACLE WHIP and love the TANGY ZIP OF THE WHIP!!!!! I ran out of MW when I was making potato salad last year for my neighbor (she loved my recipe) and I let my neighbor talk me into using her beloved dukes. That crap dukes ruined the potato salad and my neighbor visibly cringed at how bad the dukes made the salad taste and she threw it out and changed to MIRACLE WHIP.

U'm in the South and for over 30 years, I would buy Hellman's or Duke's - whichever had the best price. Until a few years ago when Duke's changed its recipe amd I no longer eat it. So for me, it's Hellman's or nothing.

Miracle Whip is branded as “salad dressing” It is sweeter than Mayo. Kraft was my childhood Mayo, but Duke’s is the true “southern Mayo” apple cider vinegar makes the taste difference.
