ABOUT THE OXFORD UNION SOCIETY: The Oxford Union is the world's most prestigious debating society, with an unparalleled reputation for bringing international guests and speakers to Oxford. Since 1823, the Union has been promoting debate and discussion not just in Oxford University, but across the globe.
The Oxford Union is deeply grateful and encouraged by the messages of support in response to our determination to uphold free speech. During our 200 year history, many have tried to shut us down. As the effects of self-imposed censorship on university campuses, social media and the arts show no signs of dissipating, the importance of upholding free speech remains as critical today as it did when we were founded in 1823. Your support is critical in enabling The Oxford Union to continue its mission without interruption and without interference. You can support the Oxford Union here: oxford-union.org/supportus

A constitutional republic with a - say it with me - representative democracy. There we go, that wasn’t so hard. If I had a dollar for every time someone conflates _direct_ democracy with democracy in general, I’d be rich.

@@jacobstamm No, we're still a representative republic. You won't find in any of the founding documents, The Articles of Association, the Committees of Correspondence, the Declaration of Independence, The Artcles of Confederation, The US Constitution, or the Ill of Rights the word "democracy" or any variation of it. Tge Founding Fathers and Framers loathed and feared democracy that much as to never use that word except with disdain and the most harsh criticism.

@@warlord8954 The complete answer is that we are all of the above: a constitutional republic governed primarily through representative democracy. Don’t forget that these terms are not mutually exclusive. Regardless of the wording used 250 years ago, the USA was from its very inception a collection of representative democracies.

According to him, he relied on online research to gather information, specifically using Google as a primary source. However, it's important to note that Google's algorithms can be prone to biases and may potentially censor certain information. As a result, it's essential to adopt a more comprehensive approach to information gathering, incorporating multiple sources and verifying facts through reputable channels to ensure accuracy and reliability.

A big gap between poverty and wealth is a real threat to democracy ... Trump was a populist President yet his Tax breaks served mainly his millionaire friends while increasing the burden of the middle class by higher taxes! This is a typical example when populism can take advantage of the purity of the masses ... However, this can be easily checked when the first tax return to which the 'cuts' apply is completed While... On the other spectrum the elites think they know best and try to 'subdue' everyone into thinking like them pushing everyone into Marxism where the few rule with 'unanimous' power. I talked to a Vietnamese who told me she goes back to visit her family and how she was able to escape Vietnam and she said :'Communism is in the hands of few families and everything is to serve them while pushing propaganda that everyone is equal. They take riches from all for the benefit of themselves and their families becoming the 'royalty comrades' .... Throughout history communists countries all know that the Communists in power were the elites that had everything at the snap of their fingers while the rest was the fill in as needed, with rationed food & electricity, while being indoctrinated how terrible the west was. When the BLM founder was found to have bought few million dollars properties with donations given to help the people she was advocating for, I said: "She is a true communist/Marxist! She claimed but now she proved" Her behavior was not new to people who encountered communism and Americans initially thought she was targeted by conspiracy theorists and racists, when proved that she indeed did she resigned and got a waiver because of politically charged environment and the color of her skin! USA Constitution is one of the most beautiful piece of document that I have read. The elevated thinking that the forefathers put into drafting the Constitution is unmatchable in the World and I hope it will be preserved for many years to come...that is the bedrock of democracy! Elites can be more dangerous than populists ... but also if populists are not kept in 'check' can become monsters. A very fine and fragile balance! It's so refreshing to watch this debate especially with the rise of social media, the debates kind of died off in USA and this is one of the main reasons for polarization, not Obama nor Trump > social media. Before the candidates used to do town halls and debates, but now they shy away from them and issue statements on twitter, Facebook, instagram, etc. I applaud you for doing this...I hope you will never stop this wonderful process of debate ... bringing issues to light and looking to them from different angles (establishing the grey area and staying away from B&W) 👏

Do what Facebook/Google is doing : get to each voter on an individual level. Figure out how to reach each voter from their perspective. Everyone is looking through a different window frame. You have to reach the voter through their personalized window frame. Algorithms, data, a.i., personalized engine searching, etc... Well this guy is ignorant. Trump is not trying to tear up NATO. You simply have to watch his speeches and instead of quoting a sentence out of context, simply quote the paragraph. The paragraph: The EU has been skirting its minimum agreed upon commitment to spend 2% of GDP on defense. France and Germany were at 1.1% and 1.3%. Bravo to Germany who, threatened by Putler, got to 2% once again for the first time since the last century. This speaker was not even born yet the last time they remotely pulled their own weight. Imagine the frustration of America spending 3.5% of GDP and having to subsidize the entire EU. All the while getting spat on by the liberal contingent we hear from in this debate. Trump was smart enough to not just remark on the stupidity, but to hint that possibly there should be a committee to investigate the idea of possibly contemplating some consequences. The florid language was "Let Putler have his way with the freeloaders". Of course, the real demagogues, the left, lifted that sentence out of the paragraph and pretend Trump is calling for the breakup of NATO. Any sane person can listen to the paragraph and know for a fact he is imploring the EU, for its own good, to at least meet the minimum spending, that they agreed on. Imagine asking people to stand by their word and getting attacked for it. What kind of insane media environment allows such pure propaganda to be broadcast and accepted as "fact".
