I was driving home round the shores of Wellington Harbour, New Zealand, and saw a shark, belly up in the shallows, slopping backwards and forwards in the waves, apparently dead. Wading in knee deep to investigate, I could see it was a small-ish oceanic shark, perhaps 1.8m long. To get a better look, I grabbed it by the tail, thinking to pull it ashore. At this point, to my surprise, it reared its head out of the water, and seemed to fix me with its huge black eye! I wish now that I'd turned it right side up, as sharks can be disabled by being inverted, but I let go and waded ashore rather rapidly! Soon after, Conservation Department people arrived, pronounced it dead, and took it away. It turned out to be a Porbeagle, and I feel privileged to have seen one of these beautiful sharks close up, and only wish it had lived.

It's a real shame that porbeagles are one of the many shark species to have become either locally or functionally extinct at the Mediterranean. In the past, the Mediterranean Sea was once a prime spot for shark diversity and a true paradise for them before the region became overfished. Porbeagles are among my favorite sharks, probably because I have a fondness for sharks with big eyes. 😢

I talked to a commercial diver who was chased from the water by aggressive salmon sharks while exploring a wreck just north of Cordova, Alaska during the late summer months. He said they "were no joke" and gave up any future plans to dive the wreck. I also have a friend who worked many years on salmon seiners in Prince William Sound (Alaska) and they occasionally caught salmon sharks mixed in with the salmon. The biggest one measured 12 feet long and he estimated it "somewhere around 500 lbs". He mentioned that no one wanted to fall into the net while they tried to get the sharks untangled, and sometimes they ended up shooting the sharks just to be able to clear them from the seine net.
