I was driving home round the shores of Wellington Harbour, New Zealand, and saw a shark, belly up in the shallows, slopping backwards and forwards in the waves, apparently dead. Wading in knee deep to investigate, I could see it was a small-ish oceanic shark, perhaps 1.8m long. To get a better look, I grabbed it by the tail, thinking to pull it ashore. At this point, to my surprise, it reared its head out of the water, and seemed to fix me with its huge black eye! I wish now that I'd turned it right side up, as sharks can be disabled by being inverted, but I let go and waded ashore rather rapidly! Soon after, Conservation Department people arrived, pronounced it dead, and took it away. It turned out to be a Porbeagle, and I feel privileged to have seen one of these beautiful sharks close up, and only wish it had lived.

It's a real shame that porbeagles are one of the many shark species to have become either locally or functionally extinct at the Mediterranean. In the past, the Mediterranean Sea was once a prime spot for shark diversity and a true paradise for them before the region became overfished. Porbeagles are among my favorite sharks, probably because I have a fondness for sharks with big eyes. 😢

I talked to a commercial diver who was chased from the water by aggressive salmon sharks while exploring a wreck just north of Cordova, Alaska during the late summer months. He said they "were no joke" and gave up any future plans to dive the wreck. I also have a friend who worked many years on salmon seiners in Prince William Sound (Alaska) and they occasionally caught salmon sharks mixed in with the salmon. The biggest one measured 12 feet long and he estimated it "somewhere around 500 lbs". He mentioned that no one wanted to fall into the net while they tried to get the sharks untangled, and sometimes they ended up shooting the sharks just to be able to clear them from the seine net.

I was sitting on the beach with a friend a couple of months back, staring out at the eastern Pacific Ocean/west Vancouver island. My friend was telling me how scared she was of the ocean because of the sharks. I told her, "The only shark out there is the salmon shark, and guess what they eat?" She stares at me, "salmon?" "Yep, we aren't on their menu." But apparently, Great Whites have been spotted this far north, but I think it was a misidentification.

In the deep waters off Antarctica there's no reason to think members of the Sleeper shark family wouldn't exist either? The temperature at 10,000 feet of water is the same in Antarctica as it is at the equator and there's evidence Pacific Sleeper sharks and Greenland sharks may live anywhere where the water is deep enough and there's enough food? If a large adult Greenland shark could be caught in the deepest part of the Gulf of Mexico then they could be in the deepest parts of the Antarctic ocean?

@@indyreno2933 I assumed they were all sleepers due to appearance, slow movement, deep water habitat etc? We don't know though what could be in the deep waters of many oceans? It's an excellent video, sir. We once had a Porbeagle caught and died in a salmon net around the coast of my village when I was a ten-year-old - in the '60s. It caused quite a stir. I remember touching its teeth and skin. Are those marked areas where you find resident sharks? Do they migrate from North to South and South to North? If not, how do they establish themselves in those areas?

Right, well I can definitely say that I learnt something new today. I had no idea that ANY shark species displayed any kind of prey behaviour at all! I mean, I have never doubted their intelligence, if they were not at least a little intelligent, then there is no way they could have lasted for as long as they have as a species surely, but it never occurred to me to do see if they ever displayed any kind of play behaviour at all. And here I was, thinking that I was, hopefully, nowhere near as prejudiced towards sharks as so many other people are. Going to have to review that now, which is not necessarily a bad thing I believe.

The salmon shark is unusual in that it has an ossified rostum on tip of otherwise cartilaginous skull. Normally other than teeth the vertibral centra are partially ossified in shark and ray family. The ancestors of Chumash first nation people's from Morro Bay to Malibu, California used these ossified rostra as religious talismans along the Santa Barbara channel specifically. Their teeth were used as drill bits for boring holes in wood like canoe planks.

Porkbeagles or porbeagles? Lol. In any case, they really aren't. If anything you should be far more scared of any domestic animal. Sharks look scarier comparatively, but they kill far fewer people than dogs do, etc. That is biased of course, since they're on land and prevalent, but even so, sharks just don't attack people all that often.

@@HenrythePaleoGuy they originally were named PORKbeagles due to a zoological investigation near a pig processing plant propulsion pipe which pushed out pig parts and pig poop into the sea PORT.

I am interested in the sharks, but not the silly evolutionary preaching about how the species came to be. You have no idea, and evolution ( not to be confused with adaptation ) has been dismantled by modern discoveries into genetics and mutations.
