Dear Porches, thank you I needed this today, don’t really know yet what this song is about on my first listen. For me I found so much meaning. Today 5 years ago is the day my brother George passed away at the age of 21 unexpectedly. I imagine all the performances and joys I wish he got to create and experience and I could be there eating cheeses puffs cheering for him. Thank you for making this and me finding the song and band for the first time right now 🌸🫶✨🔔much love Sarah L. 🤗🌟🕯😭😎🥹

[Verse 1] I feel it move, I feel it ache It's sad to see how much you change I slip into a cold lake Now I just feel it slip away [Chorus] Into a light That I once knew I swam deep And thought of you [Verse 2] I like the thought you think of me It's softer as I start to sink The trees were sex, an orange sky It is so sad to say goodbye [Chorus] Into a light That I once knew I swam deep And thought of you.

Mother Lorde feeding us with a cover of this song
@aarong72446 жыл бұрын
For the duration of the House, Maine is speaking directly to his fans; i.e. when he says “you,” he is speaking to the listener. The album is thus a conversation with fans and critics. With Maine delving more into electronic sounds on Pool he evidently lost the good favor of people he cared about. After Maine jumps into the pool in this video (I.e. released Pool) and the electronic beat comes in, the video begins to turn dark, with images of food he brought for them littered on the ground, signifying the rejection of what he brought to the audience. Indeed, this song is about saying goodbye to these lost fans or companions (notice the lyric “goodbye,” when the shot of the trashed refreshments appears). Maine is then helped up by an older couple who I assume to be his parents, and I assume this represents persevering to make the House after his breakdown of sorts following Pool. Towards the end he expresses his frustration that led him to create the House by knocking over the snacks and crawling on his piano. The video is set in a church because of the guilt Maine feels and forgiveness, or acceptance, he seeks. At the end he is literally on his knees begging for acceptance from his audience. The House is about coping with critical opinions and rejection as he decides to truly express himself in the way he feels is authentic. To get a good idea of the metaphor I’m talking about, listen to the lyrics in the first song, Leave the House, and it becomes clear he’s talking to his fans about his music and continues this motif throughout the album. The line “Tell me if you want to stay, or if it’s just easier that way,” signifies Maine’s fear both of rejection from his audience and potential audience disengagement as he switches up his musical identity. This is continued in the Goodbye video that shows that the fans did stay but looked quite bored (the Dark Muscle models) and were sipping and eating the refreshments distractedly during the performance. “The House,” itself represents both Maine’s withdrawal and isolation as a response to criticism (as displayed in Find Me) and also the musical box these critics/fans wanted him to stay in. Now the Water introduces the metaphor of water representing Maine’s new style and self-realization. The lines “Oh I feel it deeper now, and I think that it’s better somehow,” and “I’d give it all to you to become one with myself,” illustrates Maine’s connection with electronic music. This metaphor is continued in Country when Maine watches the water (his music) drip from his mouth to the listeners (paraphrase) and asks the listener to “make it light,” “do no harm,” and “break the water with your arms,” as opposed to rejecting it. Notice at the beginning of the Country music video, the gas pump simply says “Self” and in Ono, Maine ponders if he will ever “get my fill.” Another line in Country that alludes to Maine’s music is “keep it dumb, make it soft.” Never knew what that lyric was doing there until I understood the concept of the album. In By My Side, Maine expresses his guilt that he feels for changing his style. “You know how it makes me feel when you talk to me like that,” is a glimpse into Maine’s deep sensitivity to rejection from critics/fans. In Anymore, Maine describes his undoing from thinking about criticisms obsessively, or until he is “empty.” Later on, he “wonders if [fans] think about him not anymore.” The lyric “I talk to you,” which is repeated throughout the song alludes to the conversation Maine is having with the listener. In W Longing, the line “tell me what you want to hear; I want you to hear it,” is a reflection of his desire to please his fans. In Anything U Want, he repeats this line and comes to grips with the fact that he needs his fans and loves them, yet you can hear a door unhinge and voices outside as he finally leaves the house so to speak.

and, wtf, i started reading this thinking about those sensationalists who said on twitter that Lady Gaga's Perfect Ilusion is a metaphor for how her fans didn't support her on her jazz career. But near the end it became really clear that it is near to accuratte idk i loved this point of view
