I decided to make an attempt to look for porcini mushrooms knowing that there had been little rain during the previous weeks, and I’m certainly glad I did!
It turned out to be a very productive few days hunting for these delicious mushrooms over the 2021 Thanksgiving weekend in the central California coastal hills near Monterey.

Every bolete that has been genetically sequenced from california is not boletus edulis, but a variety of other species, mostly described only from the west coast of north america. Just info, great content keep it up!

That’s great info! Curious to know what other varieties other than B. edulis var. grandedulis?

@@goodmushroom most are in the process of being described and will be given a name. If you want to learn more about them and the people who are doing the genetic research on them, the north american mycological society(NAMA) damon tighe or alan rockefeller might know who is doing the work currently. Its mostly hobby science so you need to talk to individuals.

As some1 already said, you destroy mushroom underground roots.. Right way of picking them up is to just roll them left and right and then cover hole with sourandings leaves.

That's awesome bro. I'm hoping I'll be lucky enough to find one in West Michigan but I doubt it. Maybe in the up at a bit higher elevation I'll have better luck. I live in West Michigan and I have never found any of those yet#goals

You should be able to find porcini mushrooms if there are pine trees etc. Not sure if elevation matters. I find them near the coastline of central California. Good luck!

Hey I’m mycology student and was wondering if there was a spot you recommend by Monterey? I’ve been have really bad luck with finding mushrooms outside of oldgrown oak forests. Thank you , and great finds !

Hey Jessie! Thanks for watching and for your comments. If you’re an amateur mycologist then you’ve got much more information than I have, for sure! I honestly generally have pretty bad luck in finding mushrooms. Esp the edibles like King boletes! However, once in awhile I get ‘lucky’ and hit the coniferous forests around Monterey (Pacific Grove, Pebble Beach, Carmel) during the perfect window and come across an occasional beauty. My only recommendation to you would be to scour the forest floor wherever ideal conditions match up for Boletes - ie season, recent rain, soil warmth, proper vegetation (pines & other conifers) etc. Unfortunately, I personally have never found Porcini in or around old growth oak forests. I wish I could, however! Always a good idea to ask other mushroom hunters that you may encounter while hunting a certain area to get some better clues. From my experience, most people freely share info and will help you if you’re respectful. That said, these prized mushrooms have a tendency to evade even the well-experienced harvesters. So good luck and don’t give up! And don’t forget to crouch down and look for shrumps. You could be standing on top of one and hardly even know it!

I had no idea these grew near monterey. I always thought mushrooms were more of a northern california thing, and that monterey was too dry for them.

I´m a mushroom hunter from Germany. We have 4 different species of king boletes in Germany/Europe. Your findings look more like Boletus pinophilus. Are there any pine trees nearby?
@WildWorldProductionsTV
@WildWorldProductionsTV Жыл бұрын
Hi there Johnny! What part of Germany are you from? I love your beautiful country. I’ve been fortunate to have visited Germany several times. Hard to compete with the beauty there! As per exactly which mushroom species these boletes are I am not certain. Everyone has referred to them as King Boletes or just Boletus edulis. They are found in a coniferous forest (Monterey pines, etc) mixed with some deciduous trees as well. Good luck hunting! 🍄 😊

@@WildWorldProductionsTV Hello. I‘m from the south of Lower Saxony, close to the Harz mountains. We have a lot of beech/oak trees. Due to bark beetles the spruce forests are mostly dead (luckily there were only a few parcels in the forests around my home). I find lots of boletus edulis under beech and oak, unfortunately chanterelle spots are very rare.

It hurts my heart seeing you to uncover and destroy all the soil around mushroom and than leave it exposed to dry. It is really bad. Just very carefully remove the mushroom and immediately very carefully close the soil around. And try not to walk there. PLEASE.
