They were doing that all the way back to the Healy days. Healy hits each Stooge in turn, and the NBC chimes ring with each hit. Supposedly, for a long time, the NBC chimes were the only copyrighted sound effect other than the creeping door of the Inner Sanctum.

And they were actual chimes -- a mini-xylophone -- that you received via mail when your station joined the network. I had a great uncle who was in early radio and lived that. (And played the chimes on-air.)

@@DilanCommunications Not that long. The peacock was adopted to flack NBC's new colour broadcasts. These shorts were taken from radio-era Stooges serials. NBC's radio transmissions were in black and white.
