I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. The Cayman is probably the BEST value sports car in the world for combining looks & performance. I hope you keep this car for a long long time because the shape is so classic and I think it will be very desirable in years to come. Another informative interesting video from the Porsche network. Keep it up my friend. 🍻

Bought my ‘06 Cayman S 5 years ago and have had quite a few repairs. Brake pads twice, rotors on all four corners, clutch, pressure plate, throw out bearing, water pump, AOS, driver’s side door latch, coolant distribution pipe, and two sets of tires all around. $6000 US On purpose: new 19” rims, led spars like in the video, front splitters, ducktail spoiler, and side air scoops. $2500 US. Just a warning, when things break, they can get expensive if you don’t do your own work.

“Get one to track around”. Saying one of these is “affordable” is daft. If you can afford to buy a Cayman and write it off on the track then you have enough money that the running costs really shouldn’t matter to you. If they do, you can’t afford it...

A caveat if you buy a 06 reg upto 09 reg the tax is closer to £600 per annum. Plus labour and servicing at a Porsche dealer or specialist to maintain its Service history and residual value. Also an important factor you forgot to mention is depreciation / appreciation of the value of the car compared to what you paid. Overall I'd say the running cost you've underestimated.

tell me if I'm wrong, but telling about the ownership cost of a car that makes only 1500 miles a year is very subjective. It is not a daily driver and its a Porsche. If you drive that car every day like I do and I did 22K miles, there would be different figures for everything. Don't you think so?

You can see it that way if you wish, but that is my circumstance so that's all i can do. Not many Caymans will be daily drivers, so i guess it will help those that don't drive it daily. Maybe look for another guide which mentions all of this but on a daily driver. Thanks for watching :-)

@soyabean911
@soyabean911 2 жыл бұрын
@@TheDevs98 according to Hartech, who are a UK specialist in Porsche engine rebuilds, it's because of the liners used in those engine's. The following is from a post on Pistonheads Forum "The Lokasil cylinders can score (usually promoted when small pieces of silicon become detached from the cylinder wall and get stuck between the piston and the cylinder bore as the piston moves up and down and pressure is applied to drive the car along)." during the rebuilds they use Nikasil plating, which they claim is the best commercially available bore and doesn't suffer from the problem described above. Hope that helps.

I'v had my Cayman (08 plate, 2.7L, 69K miles - with full sports package) since October and love it. The (very reputable) specialist dealer had refurbished it to nearly new condition to the tune of £5K, so not expecting any problems, though I also got a three-year warranty, just in case. Paid £17K, including the extended warranty. I think paying the little extra will save money in the long run, and as with previous comments, this is one of the best value sports cars, on the road.

@@Svendrys Hi, Paul, in my case I had an electric window failure, it was iced up and broke when I tried to open the door. Dealer dealt with it promptly and put in the claim with the warranty company. Warranty was one year free and an additional two years for the price of one, so three years for the price of one year, and it gives peace of mind, especially with a car you are unfamiliar with when you buy it. Most insurance is a scam, particularly life and travel insurance, but the ombudsman is there to help in case of trouble. I have used the ombudsman three times (not connected with cars) and always won.

Appreciate your itemization of costs. Your modifications come under the heading of "common choices for this model. One thing that I would Really "Love to See"" is some one taking a stock 987 and dyno it to get baseline power figures, then fit modifications (intake, exhaust and headers) and dyno it again to see the net gain. Don't you want to know what you got for 2,144 quid. I surely would, since you are doing exactly what i intend to do once I get hold of a good 987. Would you consider such an exercise? I think there are many guys like me that would be interested in the results. Anyone who agrees, please chime in.

These cars need a proper battery, my 986 came with a year old locally built (Australia) battery and a host of gremlins. Paying $390 AUD for a VARTA mid size battery transformed the car. Check your options tag under the frunk. I found my car was fitted with a heavy duty starter and battery ex factory and needed the mid sized option. There are 3 battery size options for our cars and long storage would need the biggest. Enjoy your mid engine GT/roadster fellow Cayman/Boxster owners.

Porsche Network: Thanks for the reply. It doesn’t really make much difference as I only tax (road fund license) the Boxster for 6 months in the summer. It’s the 5th Boxster that I have owned. Bought this one for my wife a few years ago but she was nervous about parking it in supermarket car parks because I went mental if there was even a hint of a mark on it. So now it’s come back to me. I sold a 911 plus some other “special” cars but I couldn’t bring myself to sell Poppy (the Porsche). She is just so good. I have owned many 911’s over the years but, smiles per mile, the Boxster is just unbeatable. And they don’t break the bank. A true sports car and so undervalued.

The cut over is June 2006. Any car made after that date is emissions based and the road tax gets eye watering! 😭 Just save up for a gen 2 car, it goes back down with them due to direct injection improving emissions.

Having big ticket, unexpected repairs are what will be of major concern to prospective buyers.. You did a diy service - which is easy enough, but most future buyers will want to see this has been performed by either Porsche or a specialised independent dealer.. Buying for example a full set of tyres (often necessary on a used car purchase) will be £1000 or more for correct rated ones.. Things such as this will push any annual bill up a lot.. For a Cayman I think realistically you need to allow £3000/year service and repairs (excluding fuel, insurance, etc) and then you are closer to what will be needed for garage based work and parts.. If that year you don't spend all the £3000 then add it to the following year.. Then several years down the line any money still there can go towards a replacement vehicle...

Satch visually new owners, I think would like to update the exterior details. for me I’m not a fan of the stock rims I like the turbo 11 rims even of there not actual a Porsche rim, but what size spacers max size tire profile adjustment it’s more complex and know one talks about how to achieve the mod and we can’t randomly bye rims & spacers that don’t fit. Best deals are on internet but your screwed if the rim is to big . If someone “you” would show a picture of the tire specs that would say a 19” really fits but will rub unless you use 10mm spacers... guessing...everything I see says no 18” max or other options would be great to see. I liked it when you showed the two sets of rims you swapped out on your speed yellow 911 it was simple swap but cool to see how it changes the look. 911’s seem to be easier in the Wheel department. Help old Porsche guru I mean that in a nice way, I think you have more Porsche contacts then me and most of us.

Hello. I enjoy your video especially for 987 Cayman, as I own 2007 987 Cayman S. I would like to ask the front splitters. Which brand do you prefer? Is it genuine splitters for Cayman S Sports? Kind regards 😊

Thinking about one of these, currently have an Alfa Romeo Brera S prodrive, and love it, but it does lack performance although delivers on " feel " .... Your costs sound par for the course on a used car....time for a look at one of these again.

Your costs are superb, the figure you missed out on was the cost per mile. Taking your very last fig Ie basic running cost and your annual mileage of 1500 miles gives you a cost per mile of £1.73. Now that’s good.

Thanks! Very realistic view on the topics. Currently I drive cheep and old 987 Boxster 2.7 l, 5 speed, 2006 that was 35.400 km "old" 3 years ago when I brought it "in my Ducati family". Average I drive 2-3000 km per year and I don't think that I'm going to sell it EVER! Doesn't make any sense considering market and "use it" value. As I currently live (and drive) in Belgrade, Serbia, independent mechanic services (one man company) are much cheaper (the same as a dentists and "plastic" surgery ..hahahhhha). By the way, my "family" mechanic was 12 years certified Porsche mechanic in CH and RS before he start with his own small garage. Why I'm telling you this guys, most people think that Porsche is expressive for maintenance.... Belts 14-16 Euros, rollers 5-6, cutch set 800 Euro and sweetest thing, my brother paid 180 Euro for Renault Megan water pump and for my Boxster was just 160 Euros!!! Sweetness for fight with brother! Just FYI, this is my only car that is used as daily driver and many more. You can put 3 meter ladder on passenger seat and open the roof! Not to mention two trunks. High 17'' rims are great for my everyday driving and, personally, I like how it looks! Thanks.

Cool review…..I’m really thinking of getting one but I’m very concerned about this famous IMS bearing and bore scoring that everybody is talking about. What about your Cayman? Did you somehow check the IMS bearing before you bought the car, because it’s sort of difficult to do it. For bore scoring it’s a little bit easier because the car smokes white or bluish out of the exhaust…that’s what most owners say. But how the heck should one know if the IMS bearing is bad and needs to be replaced. The failure of the bearing is supposed to be catastrophic for the engine, like total damage where you have to buy a new one (engine). Is there any way to check the IMS without taking the whole engine apart?

I have a 2009 987.2 since 7 years I have the same battery, the car is completely on lockdown for five month, every year. I drive only during spring and sumner and not more than 100km a week. What I noticed is that after hading had it bought to a Porsche workshop for its first service, the xar was sitting in the garage for two complete years, and then the airconditionar was broken, also after 50000km the engine starts clicking when it is runjing, oil is at mximum. The cars sound is like of a Volkswaagen Polo 30kw engine and even though I have a s with PASM and sport chrono it loojs a sort of a city SUV not like a sports xar like the family 911.

I bought my Boxster S in 2013 for £18,750 with just under 36k on the clock. I have just added up all the cost for MOT, insurance and repairs since I purchased from a Porsche specialists who also did all the repairs and servicing including tyre changes etc. It now has just over 100k on the clock and not including fuel cost. The price per mile including purchase price works out at 51p. Not including the purchase price it is 21p per mile.

Including fuel for approx 66k miles that’s an additional 32p per mile based on 21mpg and £1.41 per litre of fuel.
