Porsche 993 Radio Install & Review | Continental TR7412UB-OR [Period Correct Radio Upgrade]

Ever want to know how to have a period correct and proper looking radio with all the modern features and sound quality in your Porsche 911? In this video I perform an install and review of the Continental TR7412UB-OR radio in my 1997 Porsche 911. I will walk you through how to remove your old radio and install this one. Thanks for the reference, it is highly appreciated. Please note that the Continental head units in Porsche cars with original radio wiring needs the permanent and switched power supplies swapped. Conti units do not have line out capabilities, and Continental does not supply any wiring leads for this. Any use of an external amp must use the speaker outputs, either with a LOC device or an amp with high level inputs. Contis also need a separate illumination power input, which is not present in the original harness.

So this is why my head unit doesn’t fire up on start up of my 993 then, correct? Because I kept the insert pins as oriented from the prior unit, not swapped. Seems like I need to just take it out and swap em but correct me if I’m mistaken. Radio otherwise looks incredible- also received from Tore with perfect Porsche stickers 🙌🏻

Update: just tried to swap them and the connectors have the small clips that hold them in place positioned in different locations so I reattached them and re-installed- am I missing something to get it to start the radio on start up of the car?

Awesome little review. I’m looking for a period correct unit for my 993 too. The Porsche classic PCM doesn’t make sense to me as it’s quite expensive and the navigation through google maps is always better than a unit with old data.

Nice radio and very easy install. Curious why you haven't done a review of the actual car itself? We want to know your experience and feedback of how the car feels and drives. Perhaps compare it to your previous 996? I currently have a 997.2 but looking to add an air cooled 993 to my garage. Keep up the good work!

I have a 95 993 for which the speakers are toast. In the process of looking for replacements, I thought it might be a good time to update the radio as well. This is a great video! I do have a question. My car does not have the HiFi option, does that mean there is no external amplifier under the passenger seat? When I was looking at the very expensive PORSCHE Classic radio, the installation instructions seem to imply you have to bypass the external amp. It’s also a lot more involved. My car came with the tape deck radio. I swapped it for the Porsche CD radio which was very easy plug and play. Since you started with an aftermarket radio, I wasn’t sure if i need any adaptors. Bergville’s own webpage is kind of confusing suggesting there are additional iSO plugs you have to buy.

In my case, I didn't need any ISO adapters, but it's probably because my 993 already had an aftermarket radio that I was replacing with this model. If you car has the stock/standard radio I believe you will need an adapter of some sort. The radio does come with one that I think you can use, but it may involve splicing the original wires into it. Unfortunately I can't provide much more detail but I would suggest taking some photos of your current wiring and sending into Bergville to ask. In my experience, they are super helpful in figuring that sort of thing out.

Btw did you replace the speakers in your car? Do the front speaker grills just twist off for both tweeter and main? Wondering if you actually need to take the door panels off to get to them. Worried about tabs that might break if you have to take the panels off. I’ve got to a few stereo shops. They either want to sell me a 10k system or they are not that familiar with the car.

I have since sold this build, but the radio was great up until the day I sold it. I didn't open it up and imagine that would be very involved. If you are looking for a period correct radio with LED colors you can fully customize to match the rest of the light colors in your vehicle check out the Blaupunkt Bremen SQR 46 DAB. I have them in my vintage Land Rover and Range Rover builds. Cost quite a bit more, but I am able to match the period neon green color of the instruments 100% perfectly, adding to the period correct look while having the benefits of great sound, good input/output options, bluetooth, hands free calls, etc.

Excellent! Exactly what I was looking for for my 97 993. I do have the HIFI option (Nokia). What modification(s) would need? I looked at ordering the radio online and it looks like it comes with all sorts of cables and plugs. My question is what is the grocery list of the items I would need to purchase? Head unit/Colar for around opening?/other? Thanks for your help!
