Burners videos rule for DIY and have helped me a lot. 2 tips that can make this job easier: 1) when putting the flywheel back on, slip a dowel or rod into one on the crankshaft holes to help guide the flywheel into place and hold its weight while you fiddle with it. 2) the flywheel bolts are torx socket head, so they have 6 distinct corners. Use this to help you get to that magical 120 degrees. The angle between 2 corners is 60 degrees. So you just need to turn each bolt 2 corners to get to 120 degrees. After you have torqued the bolts, mark each head at one of the corners or points of the torx star, and then count 2 corners on and mark the flywheel there. Thats 120 degrees. Tighten till the marks line up. Struggle like Burner. No need for paper and protractor.

the pattern for tightening bolts in radial arrangement is 1 less than opposing bolt. so in this case, there are 8 bolts, so you tighten 1st, then skip to 4th, then skip to 7th, then skip to 2nd, then 5, 8, 3, 6, then back to 1st. you end up creating 8 pointed star.

Just a tip when installing a new fly wheel, cut one of the existing bolts and thread it into the top position,this will esure you don't drop it.
@artwo29996 жыл бұрын
I wanted to mention this since it doesn't seem like anyone has. Impact sockets are not recommended for use with a ratchet. They're softer than chrome sockets - they will fail if used under high torsional load for a period time like when used with a ratchet, torque wrench, or breaker bar. For something like torquing the fly wheel bolts, you'll want a bit driver sock, with the bit made from s2 tool steel.

Another GREAT video!!! Still a little confused about the angle with each nut but I will look into the magnetic digital angle gauge. Thanks for all of your video's really appreciate your efforts!!!
@BurnersCars8 жыл бұрын
Thanks! If you use the magnetic angle gauge, make sure you still mark the starting position as you won't be able to turn the bolt 120 degrees in one shot. It's all about turning each bolt a little until they have turned the full 120 degrees.

Great Stuff, wish you were still producing Vids and interacting with your channel. Just wondering what guys at Porsche racing actually just turn each one one third of a rotation or go thru the mapping that your taking the time to do. Anywho love your vids and learning lots.

Hi Ben, Any issues with balancing? Looks like a new flywheel and clutch. When I did all that on our little 356 It was pretty rough and I had to pull it all back out and take it down and get the flywheel and clutch housing balanced together. I think Porsche even balanced the crank with them as well. It made a huge difference on how smooth it was. Maybe the Boxster isn't as fussy? Did your old flywheel have drilled balance holes? Just curious... Oh, I wanted to ask... When did you remove the crank lock and cam locks? I must have missed that... Awesome video. Really helpful to visualize it all. Thanks! Franny

How about instead of a breaker bar use an impact wrench electric or pneumatic? Save your knuckles so you can drag them on the pavement later.

Good job Ben! Must be nice to see the light at the end of this tunnel! Now, doing all this work yourself, and spending the time off the road that you have, would you say that it's worth it to save a fair chunk of money, or would you have a shop do it next time? Don't get me wrong, I am a DIY guy also, but I'm starting to learn that sometimes the biggest jobs are better in the hands of someone trained and experienced at this sort of work with the proper tools. Although, now you are intimately familiar with your car and this procedure...
@BurnersCars8 жыл бұрын
Thank you! Definitely feels good! You're right, a job like this is not for everyone. I'm definitely glad I did it because: 1. I saved a bunch of money 2. I'm a DIY guy too, and don't like other men fumbling around with my baby's undercarriage 3. It gave me confidence and familiarity with the car, so I feel like I can tackle just about any job now That said, my calculations would have been different if I had less time or needed the car more urgently. I was in the privileged position of being able to take my time and learn / build carefully. On the whole, the job was easier than anticipated and personally rewarding.

I don't understand why after after torquing each flywheel bolt to 25 Nm they say to tighten a further 120 degrees?? Why not just say (like every other torque setting, the axle nut for example) torque to X Nm? The extra 120 degrees must be equivalent to an additional X Nm ?!
@BurnersCars7 жыл бұрын
It seems strange to me, too. I don't completely understand it, but I'm told that this 2 stage torquing process is more accurate than a torque value alone.
@333Lightspeed7 жыл бұрын
The final force comes via the bolts (steal strech) under these specs. That is also the reason to use new unstreched Bolts. I guess the first torque is for the treads an the second the sretch!!?? It's the same on harleys with cylinderhad torquing. Thanks for videos these helps a lot.
