The Port Authority will finish the deck removal portion of the Raise the Roadway project at the Bayonne Bridge six months ahead of schedule, ensuring completion of this important project in advance of commercial operations at the widened Panama Canal. The deck removal will provide critical navigational clearance for larger post-Panamax ships to access port terminals in New York and New Jersey when the Panama Canal opens.

I fully understand why they're doing it and it's really ingenious. I just hope it doesn't spoil the look of the bridge. It never appears in lists of "the most beautiful bridges" - they're full of predictables like the Bridge of Sighs and the Golden Gate - but I've always loved the simple functional elegance of Bayonne. It doesn't TRY to look good, it just does.

Yeah it ruined the look TBH and you don’t get that cool truss look inside long anymore. Boring now. But good and needed for ships. Great way of designing the bridge in case it were the of needed of been raised. Worked!

no need to. i don't ever remember normal traffic being backed up on this bridge. closed for a leaper occasionally or in 1966 two ships collided almost under the bridge.

They should double-deck the New Goethals Bridge as well. And then maybe also the Bayonne Bridge when it's raised.

OK,,,it's 4 am and I came across this..interesting idea,,BUT the steel in this bridge arch is already how old????? I think a new bridge or better still a tunnel should have been considered,,,and this solution would have greatly reduced the traffic issues... I don't know, maybe even a lock system?...probably not though?...thanks for reading.

Both a new bridge and a tunnel were considered. This is what they decided on. I favored a tunnel since there will never be clearance issues for ships.

hi minkis. ty for your comments. the light rail addition was proposed 4 months before the mentioning of my bridge's rendition. in fact we had a dredging around ten years ago to correspond for the "freight ship" issue. I'm not sure if you live in the tristate area and have witnessed the light rail expansions over the last years or have read our papers. nevertheless, comparing to the hudson river to the panama canal is a bit ridiculous whereas, the bayonne bridge does involve the light rail.

I know what you mean. This bridge had a very unique long and high over the road arch that seemed to extend far beyond and below the drivers eye level. Not to many bridges of the world are like this. I have seen it up close but have never been over it. Only the Newark Bay Bridge Arch.

Check out the called Aerial America, its a really cool show that has an episode for each state showing historical landmarks, new landmarks, and dope lanscapes; all with HD swooping air Imax shots. Great show. I only said this becuase I was watching the New Jersey episode and they talked about raising this bridge so I looked it up to see if they started it yet and found this video.

This reminds me very much of the fatal design flaw in a 2-level walkway inside a gallery or some such place where they used 2 separate links rather than one to suspend the deck and the shear force of the load caused the lower span to fall.

I was reading a Book about bridges, which was written by David B. Steinman, who also happened to be one of the Engineers who built the Bayonne Bridge... I knew the PANYNJ was planning to raise the bridge... Steinman mentioned that the steel arches exert a tremendous outward Thrust. The weight of the bridge on the concrete piers is NOT perfectly vertical... So I did a Google search , to see how the PA is going to tackle this project. Now I see that it's only the Roadway that will be raised. Good.

the freedom tower was "said" to cost 4billion, when the largest building in the world (double the squared height and width of the freedom tower) cost only 1.4billion. the two buildings were actually built within the same time, and the Burj Khalifa tower was finished in less than half the time. During this port authority also increased fares, for added profit. Not to mention our tower was completely paid through grants and fundraising.

They should consider double decking the New Goethals Bridge in the near future. At least they finished raising the roadway of the Bayonne Bridge in 2019 and they should also raise the arch of the bridge so that the bridge can look better than it did before.

Burj Khalifa was built with no regards to human life. Search 'dubai slavery'. They used unskilled slaves to construct it in heat we could not even fathom, paid them next to nothing, made them sleep on top of each other, and worked them over 12 hrs a day. The freedom tower is built to last. The cleanup of debris, the new foundations (around existing PATH station), and the fact the the building is probably 4 times as strong as the previous 2 towers made it take longer.

Watch this video on StreetFlimslog about the Lincoln tunnel. also increase speed limits in the Lincoln Tunnel busway and open it 45min earlier and close it 65min later. London has prioritized bus lanes by making 3 lane highways into 2 and the 3 lane is for buses New York is bigger and New Jersey need a quicker cleaner way of accessing it.

A tunnel would be a better solution, but is more costly and because the US government is so in debt, they can't afford it. Also, many aren't bothered by these structures because when you live in NY, you are surrounded by so many massive bridges, and structures, we are just use to it, and frankly, unless you live right by the bridges, they aren't eye soars.

Although I dont know anything about the corruption of the PA, I can tell you the freight ships arent bullshit. Google 'widening of panama canal' This is not the only huge construction project funded for this. There are plenty others and they all have nothing to do with the light rail. The light rail isn't even going on the new bridge unfortunatley.

ny has very critical building codes (i used to be a union contractor) & the freedom tower is no stronger than any other building in nyc. the construction projects are very standard in order to keep within code. so lets go back back now, and disregard everything i have said as i snot need it to back me up. even with your accusations, my previous/original comments still lie in effect bc nothing you mentioned effects the profit that was made, where it went, and why it took so long.

i definitely understand what you are saying. most americans believe they have it so great yet if you compare the dollar of our workers, its not much of a difference. even without that said, the great pyramids were built under even more drastic conditions and they still remain. quality of life doesn't effect quality of the structure especially when the uae have more money than we do to build efficiently.

Yea all nice but how long os this going to take ... and you guys close the dam bridge down everynight as it is ..... ... I would like to talk to the wonder planners who thought of this ..... my question is wouldn't it been so dam easy justbto build anther bridge along side of it and demo the old bridge after you are done........ as a staten island resident this idea sucks for the many who work and need to take the bridge to work and everytime u close it down it costs people like me more money in tolls to get around it and beside the fact they are working on every bridge on the island your timing sucks ........ !!!!!!!!!!!!!! So my question again to port authority is when and how ling is this going to take !!!!!!!

maldo72 I've noticed that when clueless idiots don't have a valid argument, they utter the cliché "Whatever". If you knew the least bit about the neighborhoods surrounding the Bayonne Bridge on both sides of the Kill Van Kull, you'd know that the bridge cuts through densly populated residential neighborhoods. If they were to build a new bridge alongside the old one (and then tear down the old one when the new one was completed), they would have to purchase and/or or acquire though eminent domain, then demolish dozens, perhaps even hundreds, of homes in Elm Park, Staten Island, and in Bayonne. The only reason that they are able to build replacement bridges parallel to the old ones at the Goethals and Tappan Zee Bridges is because those bridges cut through sparsely populated areas. Before you make another ignorant comment about something which you know nothing about, please get your facts straight.
