Wonderful! My God that takes me back . I used to live in Capel Le Ferne in the 70s , took the hovercraft or the ferry many times as we have relatives in Holland . Thanks for sharing 👍

Great footage of 1970s ferry activity at Dover Eastern Docks. We see the French Sealink vessel Compiegne approaching and departing, A Townsend Thoresen European Class freighter passing Sealink's Horsa, and the Free Enterprise V docking at Berth 3. Also a Townsend Thoresen liveried Routemaster bus? Those were the days when the ships looked like ships and the harbour activity was far more varied and interesting.

Thanks for identifying. I'm guessing this is before the ferry companies started Jumboisation of everything.

Some interesting 70s vehicles in this footage. The Free Enterprise V was a pretty little ship too, with clesrly discernible 'sheer' like ships used to have. Shame what happened to the company under P&O. The way they treated the Herald victims was disgusting.

It’s the Free Enterprise 5. I know for two reasons. 1, it’s written on her hull and 2, because that’s me opening the top car deck stern doors (port side) around 1 min 54 secs in. With the rolled up sleeves. It was nothing like the Herald that turned over in 1987 and, although it did carry trucks it was mostly a car ferry.

Do you know when the Dover Travel Centre (now demolished) at the entrance of the eastern docks was built? Was it when the Jubilee way was inaugurated in 1977? I did go there a lot as a kid. The small Cafeteria at the back had a 360 degrees panorama of Dover Harbour through the ages.

That wasnt yesterday i was a young kid when i saw these sights goin in a friends truck to places all over europe and sometimes beyond great days indeed this looks like late 70s judging by the vehichles and the dress of the day . Very few easterns in those days there were turkish and iranian trucks i remember but not lots like today . Changed days . Now .

Great nostalgic video! Do ships only leave and arrive at high tide? Or is it deep enough at low tide. I know ferries have a small draft, but does anyone know the maximum depth of the port ?

Back then when ferries were prettier than today's.

Agreed. Why do modern ships, whether ferries, cruise ships, freighters, have to be so damned ugly? I miss the days when ships actually looked like ships -sleek and graceful - rather than boxes with a pointy bit stuck on the front.

It looks very similar to the ferry that capsized near Zeebrugge in 1987
