I wasn't much of a wine guy until I tried port, my grandfather would make wine every season from his purple grapes he grew and the extra amount of time he would ferment them really took it into the sweet raisiny almost brandy type of taste. Tawny port really brings back those memories! I find that I really like dows fine tawny it's only around $15.00usd per bottle and it's always good quality no funky tastes like Taylor's $7.99usd per bottle port lol

I traveled to Porto this summer. It was a huge turning point for me...fell in love with Port wine and wine in general (used to be beer guy). I tried Sandeman 10 yo and Late Bottled Vintage. Both were amazing, great tasting wines. Brought some of the Late Bottled Vintage 2016 back home for further maturation. Oh and the city of Porto- amazing! ;)

As a five year old, thereabouts, I'd be encouraged to let in the new year with a tot of Cockburn's; it was lovely. I also would be given half a teaspoon of 'whikky' in a hot sweet tea to take a chill off my chest, as a result I suppose the mystique of drink wasn't there as I've never really indulged as an adult and am virtually tee total.

Excellent introductory video, it went through the history and the major styles and why Port is so wonderful. It would have been nice to have known the actual wines you were drinking and maybe a bit about the houses. I'm a big fan of Fonseca, one of the big powerhouse producers, followed by a love of the more delicate Warre. Being a 1963 baby I have had my fair share of that vintage including Fonseca, Warre, Graham, Dow, Taylor and the absolute bomb that is Noval Nacional.

I love port wine, but right now I'm in a dilema, one of my bottle leaked... I store them just like normal wines. Maybe I do it wrong, because on Taylor's bottles, it says to store it upright... I would like to have older wines in my collection, but not knowing if I store them corectly makes me avoid the expensive ones. Anyways, great info. Thanks.

It really depends on how long it's been resealed. Once it is opened it is susceptible to oxidation.

Thanks for a great video! When is the brandy added? Is that the neutral spirit you mentioned?
@TheGrapeExplorer4 жыл бұрын
The brandy was the historic addition made by the English. Today it is a neutral grape spirit, no flavour or aroma and is added at the end of the fermentation. Cheers

Port wine is from Porto, Portugal. So creative the name given to the wine 😂
@linoramalho22914 жыл бұрын
L. Hollanda in Portuguese it’s called Vinho do Porto literally translated Wine from Porto. It was used to designate where the wine came from and the name stuck.
@estelleschneider90333 жыл бұрын
Port Wine I learned is not really the imported from Portugal ..it will say Porto on the Bottle with a seal
@LHollan3 жыл бұрын
@@estelleschneider9033 you’re partially right, Port Wine is like English man called wine from Porto. This became a typo of wine and many people started producing fake port wine, but you still can find many “Port” in many bottles of wine from Porto, the most important thing is the seal to be sure you’re buying a true Port Wine. This kind of widespread copies also happened with Champaign, we call many fake champagne with this name even though just the French one is Champaign
@gruilen3 жыл бұрын
I like the cheaper tawny's. The more expensive ones are moving in the direction of a sherry. Dry(er) and woody. Fine, but then i'll buy a cheaper sherry instead.

Specific info re: port wines starts at 3:40. Videos like this always leave me wondering, "Yeah, but what if everyone's taste sensation is completely unlike everyone else's?" Coffee for me may taste like port wine to another person. So saying this or that port has notes of prunes or whatever may be particular only to one person. I've researched this, and the preponderance of the scientific data is that the number and types of taste papillae fluctuate very substantially among human beings as a function of age, eating experience, and even time of the month (buds recycle about every 2 weeks). Not only that, but if you factor in that stimuli from the taste papillae have to be interpreted by the brain, then there's a whole additional layer of variability introduced. Then, someone has to interpret and talk about the taste sensations on youtube. So, to me, bottom line is that it's questionable if anyone's taste sensations bear any resemblance to any other person's taste sensations. I wouldn't go so far as to say all this kind of talk about taste notes is BS, but it certainly could be.

I take it by BS you meant Bloody Superb so thanks for the positive comment and for watching.
