Good shit. Been a gen tech for 12 years now, and love it too! Especially if you work for a good company that doesn't micro manage.

Could you do a tour of your service truck and recommend tooling?

Well said! I was in retail management for 13 years. Got lucky and got a job as a generator tech 3.5 years ago for a union shop. Unfortunately there is no apprenticeship for Gen techs in this area so all the training was on the job. And you are right about the boomers. Half of our shop was boomers when I started and they’re all retired now (taking all of their knowledge with them). We’re down to 4 techs and can’t find anyone interested!

I’m a little over a year in and starting at a new company on Monday for $28 an hour, the money is there! Same benefits you have (boot and tool allowance, 401k matching, etc.) with a company truck. 60 hours a week max which is great! Loving this life so far

I did 4 years in the Ohio National Guard, worked on wheeled vehicles and generators, Did Small Engine Mechanics outside of there, became a diesel tech, worked on school busses, and then on big trucks. Now I'm doing an in person interview on Wednesday with a big Ohio generator company.

Hell yea. I always get excited when people go from buses and big trucks to gen. It’s so fucking easy. Your on your own. A lot of “get there and wait” The generator is basically open frame when you are in the commercial / industrial size. Your going to love it. And pay should be higher. Depending on your electric knowledge also

@@PortableGeneratorServices I've done some electrical of course because of having to do it on busses and bigger trucks. I even told the hiring manager, like I'm 28 years old, I know many in my generation right now DO NOT WANT to work, but I WANT to work, I show up every day, do my best, and go home to my family at the end of the day. I work hard, not afraid of fuel, coolant, oil, anything like that and have no problems getting my hands dirty. I love working with my hands, I love to learn, and that's more than you'll get from most right now.

Awesome video man. You are absolutely right the market is flooded with “regular technicians” and lacking generator techs. I just switched to a generator technician role after being a diesel technician for awhile. I definitely like working on trucks and equipment but generators are a different animal. Generators are fun and love being out and about. We work on all types cat Cummins but mainly MTU as we are Detroit. Came across your videos man love it 🤙🏻

your gonna love it, can hit 50 an hour once you get some years under you, with insane overtime, amazing benifits, companies are going crazy for good diesel gen techs. :)

Thanks for posting this video. I'm currently working as a forklift technician and just accepted a generator technician job. I was offered $5 more than the generator job from one of our competitors but chose the generator one instead. I got an Associates in Electrical Technologies so I feel it's a better fit. Also, I don't have to worry about hydraulics, brakes, transmissions, differentials, steering, etc with generators.

I’m debating on getting an AAS degree in Electric Power Generation or a diploma in Electrical Systems Technology but my main goal is to become a gen tech! Hard part is choosing which route to take, any advice would be greatly appreciated!
@PortableGeneratorServices
@PortableGeneratorServices Жыл бұрын
the route to take is to go take a trade 4 year electrical apprenticeship program, while comopleting it work for a company who will pay for your "apprentice classes" which in florida are hosted at night so that u may work during the day, u work for an electrical company that installs generators, work your ass off as a helper, ask questions, become a team leader, lead your own installs, get reviews from customers so that your the one seen on the google business pages in the review section that will get ur noticed by the owners, telll ur boss u want to be trained on the generator service side of things, ask to be sent to school so that your "cross trained" and can do both electrical install and troubleshooting / start ups. then get sent to generac air cooled school. keep learning ask for raises. find what other techs make, join my facebook generator group *Generator Engine Manual Files / Support" ask questions, then leave and do commercial company generator service, get experience, find the best techs and be there bitch so they dont mind working with you ask ask ask questionis. copy all the tools they have, invest in all the tools. then once u got experience and they arent teaching you anymore shit, leave and go to industrial generators, find the best tech. ask ask ask learn learn learn, I did that, i went from 14, 18, 25, 32, 38$$$ then left and made my own business. www.portablegeneratorrepair.com or on google. portable generator services look me up i am the highest best rated generator business in florida, 5.0 rating with over 120 reviews.

I dont like driving on the highway would they get angry if you drove on regular roads when you're doing your job. Alsi do you have to have college degree for this field?
@PortableGeneratorServices
@PortableGeneratorServices 2 жыл бұрын
no you dont need a college degree , its better to have experience in engine or electrical and i mean if u gotta drive two hours to a location and u want to take the back road the whole time, it will turn into 4 hour drive, they will def bitch and probably let go of you.
@kebrownnov2993
@kebrownnov2993 2 жыл бұрын
I kinda agree here, like to a company money is time and time is money. If you can get to a location in half an hour and it takes you 45 minutes to an hour to get there, that's 15 to 30 minutes of their time, in a way, you just wasted. For most, any time you aren't working on their products it's non billable time. So essentially, they're paying you to drive there, using their fuel and putting wear and tear on their vehicle and not making the company any money.
