The PAC-12 vertical antenna is a great antenna. I received mine yesterday. The wire they give you for a ground radial system is around 27 feet. It's a non resonant length for 20 or 40 meters. Plus, the ribbon cable should be split into 10 lengths and spread our around the vertical. Cut five of the wires to a length of 16.5 feet for 5 each quarter wave 20 meter radials. What I did was to make my own radials. I made three each 35 feet long radials and three each 16.5 feet long radials. I spread them out around the base of the vertical and on both 20 and 40 meters my SWR went down to 1.2 to 1 SWR. My reading was taken at the feed point of the antenna. What you did was a quick and simple setup and that's great. My point is by working a little with the radial field you can greatly improve the performance of this antenna. Nice video, glad you posted it. Barry, KU3X/QRP

Hi Barry, many thanks for the great comments. You are quite correct, sorting the radial field will certainly help with the performance.

I added a LDG RU - 1:1 unun to the base of my jpc12 which helped bring the vswr down to near 1:1 on most bands, only been out with it once at the moment but it's looking quite a promising antenna.

I have an LDG RU 1:1. How did you attach it? was it to the antenna with a short coax?

I thought about that too. I would use a common mode choke at the antenna feedpoint, particularly if I was running more power.

@@briantrask8173 sorry for the long wait for the reply, I use a double male pl259 connecter straight to the base of the antenna and the common mode choke.

Fellas, a line isolator is also needed on that coax before entering the radio otherwise the coax outer braid will act just like another radial which in turn will skew swr readings.

I thought i'd post a little review on the JPC-12 as i'm pretty impressed with it, but can't seem to add a review on the website. I purchased it, as it's quite 'stealth' and suits my QTH situation. I must say, i'm more than chuffed with it's performance. In just under 2 months i have worked 57 countries, with about 470 QSOs mainly on 20m, and receive great audio and signal reports infinately more often than bad ones. "Very strong signal" and "great audio" are comments I have heard regularly. I run the Icom IC-7100 through it, and although i'd quite like an antenna that needs no adjustment to change bands, i require an 'antenna for small gardens' solution. I doubt if adding something like a Diamond BB7V will perform well enough to justify the spend, once I add in a tuner too. It's more efficient on 20m, which is unsurprising, but still performs well on 40m. I've started to work 20m of a weekend, then adjust the antenna to 40m for operation during weekday evenings, given the time of year. On SSB, my logbook includes Australia, Canada, USA, Iceland, Indonesia, Brazil and China, together with very regular contacts into pretty much all of Europe (for some reason, I find it difficult being heard in Greece, although I have worked Greek and Cypriot stations, but impossible to get heard in Turkey lol. I'm hoping additional radials, strategically placed, will help). After the first couple of weeks, I added 12 additional radials (Comet CGW-560 x 2, you'll need washers as the centre ring is larger than the antenna ground spike) and I really noticed a difference. So much so, i'm going to add another dozen, or find a radial plate and install more than that. My JPC-12 is permanently deployed in my small garden, and has so far withstood the windy weather of late, even with the whip extended. All in all, a brilliant product. Highly recommended. There's a picture of it in situ on my QRZ page. M0JYH

We strongly suggest that you do not hit the spike with a mallet. We advise that you thread a nut, of the correct size, onto it and then have a piece of softwood to use between the spike & mallet.

I am surprised someone hadn't come up with that coil tap arrangement decades ago. Its quite simple. Other arrangements that can tap different points around the circumference may provide slightly better SWR, but not by much.

The sliding coil tap dates back to radio's early days. Crystal radios used them. Rorary coils have a slider like this, but instead of clicking back and forth, it turns the coil.

remove the centre coil tuning unit and use only the four aluminium tubes plus the telescopic antenna, reduce the last section to approximately 10cm and you are ready to go on 15m after checking swr...and remove the centre coil and the 4 aluminium tubes and use the telescopic section straight onto the top of the feed point and adjust length for 10m. so all in all you have a quad band portable vertical antenna......super bit of gear, would'nt part with my one now..De EI7IAB
