I am lucky to have a local mill owner (a professional hydraulic 40hp mill btw) who will sharpen and set for $5 to $6 per 144" blade so spending about $1000 on sharp and setter is a non starter I am happy to report. Ask around guys before you take the plunge. He is only 5 minutes away to boot. Thanks Sandy for another great review.

One thing you are forgetting. When figuring out the cost of blades, you need to factor in shipping. For me here in Saskatchewan, it would probably double the blade cost depending on how many are ordered at one time.

10 blades,Sharpened 5 times, equals 50 blades.. 50 blades at $23.00 a blade = $1150.00. I think I want a blade sharpener.. Did I calculate correctly?

Chuck, take a look at my post above regarding the Cooks sharpening equipment. The Cook brothers are third generation saw filers and they really know their work. They build there sawmills and sharpening system starting with the blade and then moving outward from there. I do not think that there is another manufacturer that is as committed to quality as Stephen and Tim Cook.

Yeah I’m in the same situation since the cost is just so high. I’m getting closer to the cost of then since I’m using more blades the longer I have the mill. Guess I better make the decision at some point

The way I worked it out is the woodland sharpener, and a 10 pack of blades with tax and shipping is basically 1250.00 You can sharpen them 5 times so that's 60 blades. That works out to 21 bucks a blade. Definitely cheaper, but also doesn't take into account time. Now if you could sharpen them 6 or 7 times, that brings the cost down to 18.00 and 15.50 respectively, which would start to make sense to spend the money on a sharpener.
@justincarney27754 жыл бұрын
I bought the woodland mills sharpener. A bit of a learning curve and had to watch it pretty close. If a tooth doesn't move forward appropriately you will trash the blade. I've ruined several blades perfecting the art. This plays into the cost column. Not to mention the grind wheel cost. Found battery on tractor works just fine for remote sharpening and hooking upto booster pack or charger negates battery purchase. I dont mill as much as I would like, haven't justified the cost....yet.
@sawingwithsandy4 жыл бұрын
That’s good to know. I’m still on the fence of what sharpener is buy but the woodland mills seems like its a pretty simple design which I like. Would you buy it again?
@justincarney27754 жыл бұрын
@@sawingwithsandy I'm satisfied with construction and function. Pretty simple yet ingenious design. I would probably buy it again. I find initial cost on sharpeners in general a little steep and tough to justify for the amount I mill. What sold me on it was the ability to limit my down time, resharpen and get back to it. "Time" is the most important commodity for me. I squeeze in sawdust therapy when ever possible.

Correction the cooks auto sharpener alone is $2,595.00, I know this because I'm going to soon be purchasing one, the dual tooth setter is another $1,295.00, if you buy both in a set the price is $3,690.00, I'm buying the set "/

Have you considered having someone sharpen them? Often there is a local guy that will do it. Woodmizer will do it for $8 a blade sharpened and set. Shipping averages about $10 -$11 a blade total. If you had 30 blades, You could rotate out 10 at a time for about $100. 15 blades will last me almost a year, give or take. This is a much cheaper alternative, especially when you consider the time needed for you to sharpen. I would rather do it myself, but I am strongly considering the sharpening program. My estimates for the long term will be buying 5 new blades a year to replace, and have 10 sharpened.

A well sharpened used blade will cut as well or better than a new blade if you have good equipment. There are a lot of very good videos on sharpening and setting up a mill for cutting on the Cooks Saw page. kzbin.infovideos

You talk about setting the teeth and then bevelling when it comes to sharpening. Are these 2 different things or just different terminology for same thing. I use blades that are what i have always assumed are straight with the teeth set to one side or another. How does bevelling come into play?

Yeah I set the teeth so they bend to either side of the blade and then sharpen them

You forgot one very important element. If you are selling your wood virses using it just for yourself. If you are in the business of selling your wood, these costs of the sharpner no matter who get buy from should be insignificant as a cost of doing business. Sorry this video is just another attempt at making content, which by the way you did a good job of.

Only sharpen your blades 5 times. What a joke How much metal are they taking off. I have sharpened my blades up to 13 times If you dont destroy your blades and sharpen before they get to dull they last a long time. We have a norwood mill for 13 years.
@wallaceeverett39274 жыл бұрын
I agree; I have used 11 blades since 2005, and sharpened 10 of them 12+ times on a Cookssaw copy sharpener that I built for about $500. I also have a single tooth setter that I built for almost nothing; and I set blades every time that I sharpen. Check out Cooks equipment, they have the best info on mill set up and sharpening. Some of the sharpeners that I've seen on youtube do not push on the tooth that is being sharpened and if you have any tooth spacing that is not the same it will grind wrong! Check them out!
