Thanks for the tut. When I'm creating portal maps, I'm always just thinking of the logic and mechanics. These design tutorials are incredibly useful and I can tell they are making me a much better mapper.

Little thing btw, to solve the door issue at 38:00, you can actually place a trigger directly in front of the door and use OnEndTouch to close the door. That way you dont have to do the 3 brushes and worry about portals.
@Arachnaphob9 жыл бұрын
+PistonMiner Problem with that is that you could walk back through the door and trap yourself in the pre-test lobby area thing.
@PistonMiner9 жыл бұрын
+Arachnaphob True, but you can make the trigger extend past the door far enough it can't be closed if you really have to.

There's no real need to make a trigger that will close the exit door once you pass it. The exit elevator logic instance actually has one for that, so if you name the door @exit_door it will close automatically

Oh, and ~55 minutes in - why not use the PTI light strip models? They're a lot easier to put in because they rest on top of the surface you stick them to, so you don't have to carve out all that nodraw behind them. Kinda like stickers. ...I think they have an issue with z-fighting when viewed from really far away, but the ones in the antechamber are close to you so I don't think it's an issue. right?

Avg search lol Ok but seriously - I'm about 20 minutes in right now, and have some little questions... a) Why is it bad to have a texture extend out into the void? b) Is it bad to have a texture (that isn't nodraw) ENTIRELY in the void (think "PTI maps imported into hammer", where the outside of them is covered in floor/wall textures.)
@asmylia98809 жыл бұрын
well, the game is slowing down and the capacity of the file is shrinking with every texture, that is not useful, btw with every un-useful texture, the file is growing without reason.

The elevator frame won't appear for me :/ (The one you put in at 0:46)
@Arachnaphob9 жыл бұрын
Russell Casad Most likely the map isn't saved or the elevator instance is missing. I don't know what would be the cause farther than that.

Arachnaphob I did what you said and it doesn't work :/ I even went to the exact file you were on, I wanted to make a 'overgrown' style and I was trying to lean from your 'clean' style tutorial, is there anywhere else I can find the file?

use the brush tool with the trigger texture the double click on it and do ctrl=t. go to the top right and change it from a func_detail to a trigger_once.

how do i run the map
@Arachnaphob9 жыл бұрын
+Furry Zombie Puppy I would reccomend watching some basic hammer tutorials before watching these. However, to run the map, pressing F9 will bring up the compiler window, and from there it will let you choose your options for compiling+running the level.
@Blehh56788 жыл бұрын
Honestly why do people need hammer for this? The only reason I see for somebody to use hammer is if they wanted an overgrown/Wheatley/original complex puzzle idea. This looks like it can be made easily in the original in game editor, and certainly in less than one hour at that too
@milo-ep7tq8 жыл бұрын
What if you wanted a diversity vent or something? Anyway, hammer is just more professional.
@Peter-ft8nl7 жыл бұрын
Hammer Is WAY more flexible than the PTI editor even the geometry here is impossible in PTI. Aldo this is made to be a base point not a end. i.e. His overgrown tutorial starts with this Plus PTI is badly optimised
@asmylia98807 жыл бұрын
jjt171 Also, PeTI is overusing textures. Even places you can't see/reach are filled unnessecary with textures, which makes the level itself very resource heavy. With hammer, you can just texture those things you actually see/reach and fill the rest with Nodraw, which actually takes 0 impact. You've got smaller files.
