Folks not familiar with tuning a limited ignition saw such as the 461 may find it beneficial to tune with a tachometer. The 046, ms460, and ms461 use a different outside spike than the 064, 066, ms660, the R-model spikes work very well and are my favorites for felling. Stock I find the 461 to have good torque and pulls a 25" bar fine but is lacking with a 28", the clutch stalls more easily, you will find the clutch drums last longer on a ported one vs stock with properly sharpened chain and longer bars (same on 044, 462, 500i etc). The regular 461 oiler barely oils a 25" bar adequitely in hardwoods so I would upgrade to a high output oiler if yours is not an R model, it significantly cuts down on bar wear and lubes the chain better in the cut. The air filtration on the 461 like most Stihls sucks, to the point I have had them consistantly start running poorly after felling 5 trees and shut off after felling 12 trees with the stock filter and not want to run until I change or blow out the air filter, a Maxflow solves this problem. 3/4 wrap ported R model 461 arctics running a 28" es light bar (balances very well) with Maxflow air filter, & factory dual port muffler are my choice of saw in the winter. With proper maintenance the 046 (no flippy caps 👍), ms460, ms461 saws will easily last the average user a lifetime. Great, reliable saws.

Any idea on the hi output chain oiler? I run a 28in on mine love a heavy Oiler tho.
@230e42 жыл бұрын
@@justinweaver8787 If your pump is not a R-model high output you can install R-model pump piston 1128-647-0602 and control bolt 1128-647-4803 in your existing pump housing or purchase the whole pump assy. You will also want to replace the o-ring for the control bolt. I run mine wide open with 24"+ bars, fill the fuel tank to the bottom of the slot for the cap retainer as the saw will run out of oil before it runs out of fuel if you fill the fuel tank with the high output pump.

@@justinweaver8787 a sharp chain and good oiler is key for sure. I have modified the pump piston on other saws that did not option a high output pump to increase the output for hardwoods. Oil is expensive but wearing out bars (especially light bars), tips, and chains is too. Plus a well lubed chain causes less drag and runs cooler benefitting the saw and operator.

Hi Tinnman!!😀😀 I don't have a ms 461 but I have a couple ms460s. My 460 also will usually fire on the first pull and if you aren't careful it will flood instantly. If you run it every day you usually don't even have to choke it when it's cold for it to start. If you choke it and pull it over once it will be flooded and then you have to pull and pull too get it to start. Take care my friend!!😀😀👍👍 Logger Al

I just bought a used 461 to handle the "big stuff" that my 362 struggles with. TBH, I've been a bit disappointed in the 362, it constantly bogs down on full length cuts running a 20" bar. It handles the smaller stuff fine, but that's not why I bought that saw. I have an old 250 that I use for the small stuff. Someday I'll replace it with a 261, but that little 250 will not die and does the job. Anyway, back to the 461, it has a 25" bar and a full house chain and it chews through live oak logs like nothing. Based on that experience I decided to throw on an 8 point sprocket to see how it would do. Still running the 25" bar, that thing cuts anything I've tried, no chain catches, no bogging down. I am really impressed with the 461 and I'm now thinking of selling the 362 because I find it hard to think of situations where I'd reach for it. Small easy stuff is handled by the 250, and anything bigger is a job for the 461. Saving two pounds is significant, but not worth the frustration when I know the 461 will get the job done with no fuss.
