Lyrics:
i was born
in a sudden embrace, i’m awake
so i study the shape of your face
you take what you’re given
“i only wanna do what’s good for you”
then at once,
i’m checking the doors and my weight
i can’t keep my hands from my face
i said, “mom, i’m so sorry,”
she smiled and said,
“darling, i don’t want you to worry cus
i’m on your side for the rest of your life
you’ll never be alone, don’t you worry my child
and now there’s an empty room you outgrew,
but i’m here for you
Ooh”
and i’ve known
the feeling you’ve had when you’re held
the comfort of being unwell
so something can cradle you
oh, i don’t need it
oh, i won’t grieve it
i’m on your side for the rest of your life
you’ll never be alone, don’t you worry my child
and now there’s an empty room you outgrew,
but i’m here for you
Ooh”
i’ll do right by you
i only wanna do what’s best for you
i’m on your side for the rest of your life
you’ll never be alone, don’t you worry my child
and though there’s an empty room you outgrew,
i’ll wait for you,
Ooh”
i’m on your side for the rest of your life
you’ll never be alone, don’t you worry my child
and now there’s an empty room you outgrew,
but i’m here for you
ooh”

Nice but I feel Shelter is a combined one for both mom and dad, parents, to be exact.. However there's a song called "Not All Heroes Wear Capes" by Owl City, another artist that I love and that's especially about dad.. Love that as well..

hi porter. i doubt you will ever read this, but. I'm not really a particularly emotional person. i don't get emotional super easily, i don't get too attached. but for the past few days i've been having some real anxiety problems - feeling like you're about to have a heart attack kind of anxiety. feeling like i could drop dead at any moment even though i probably don't have any heart disease. so at the peak of it, after days, i texted my mom just to feel some comfort. and this song came to my mind. mind you, i haven't heard this song in 3 years or so. But just remembering the chorus, just that bit i remember, made me start crying. i very rarely cry, and usually i just tear up for a moment and it's over. While now I've been crying my fucking eyes out for an hour, i believe. Like ugly crying, actually crying, and sobbing, and all that. A grown ass man in his apartment alone, crying like a toddler while making dinner. Letting out all the built up tension from the past days, months, years. Letting out all of the emotion, and love, I usually don't feel. I know you have probably read thousands of people saying this, maybe people whose life you saved, but I still wanted to let you know the power of your art, and your words, which goes way beyond my comprehension. -F

When I first saw the song title, I knew this would be the most important song to me from the album. I was not wrong at all. 11 years ago, I lost my mother at the age of 15, and to this day, it is still painful to have that embedded. I'm always told that she's proud of me, that she's smiling down on me, and this song reaffirms that, especially in the chorus. She'll be by my side no matter what I do and where I go. Here's to you, mom. Miss you tons.

Some of us have more complicated relationships with our mothers. We didn’t have positive experiences growing up. Maybe felt like we weren’t wanted - that we were mistakes to them. Despite that, this song still hits pretty hard. My friends’ mothers took good care of me, and I’m lucky to be able to say something like that. That I felt I belonged to any family as a child. So I’ll just pretend this song and Shelter are about them: the heroes who took in someone else’s child and raised him with the patience, love, and attention he didn’t receive from the people who brought him into the world. They deserve at least that, I feel.

Thank you for sharing your perspective on this - I too didn't have a loving caring mother, so the song was making me sad. But thinking of it as being about someone who cared for and took you on helps a lot. I had a few figures like that - unfortunately they were few and far between, but the love they gave me in that time was more than my biological mother could.

My son and I have a complex relationship also, but he does know he is a little piece of me that will be connected and last forever more and no one loves him more...I wish you ❤ and a better life experience for your children.

I didn’t have a good mother in my life, but I became a mother to 4 amazing kiddos. I’ve worked hard to learn from the mistakes of my mother to try to give my children the opportunity to live a life I only dreamed of. To build those connections with them, those memories, those embraces. To celebrate them at every step of their accomplishments and to encourage them to keep going when they hit those unwanted obstacles in life. This song brought me to tears. Even if I didn’t grow up with a good mother, the experience I shared with her helped mold me in to the person I am today. So for that, I will always appreciate her. I just hope my children one day can see that and be able to do the same for theirs. I hope they continue to break the cycle. Thank you for such a beautiful song!

it's only really just occurred to me - i always found the photographs in this album to be beautiful but i only just realized how significant this one is to the message of the song. It's easy to see and admire a bright, beautiful flower but we don't notice the rich but humble soil that allowed it to grow, this song is about the seeing the normally unseen mother that brings forth the best in her children

As someone who grew up in really abusive and neglectful households, I couldn’t help but burst into tears when I heard the line, “I’m on your side for the rest of your life.” I actually had to stop listening to this song and just leave it for a couple days while I mulled things over and found some extra closure I hadn’t known I needed. I’m not even a really emotional person, but that line just got to me. It cut me to the core. Anyway, I finally came back to this song later on and listened to the whole thing. It’s really beautiful, even though it’s also painful to listen to. Well done, Porter Robinson. Well done. 👏🏻

Just lost my mom back in October, just about 2 years after losing my dad. I'm 26 now and often feel like a child "lost" in a grocery store. I'm not sure how I do it most days. Maybe it's resilience, maybe it's a defense mechanism, or maybe it's millions of years of evolutionary instinct focalized to a single point in my subconscious. This song was a pleasant surprise even if it jerked some tears. If you're in the comments looking to see who else has felt the way you do, well just know it'll all be alright.

I lost my mom at 10 and my dad at 23 (11 years ago). I still relate a lot to the feelings you describe. I actually spent many years being "over it" only to realize as an adult that I still carry a lot of pain and didn't get to really have a normal childhood, which has effects that will stay with me forever. I find ways to get through it and thrive, despite all that, though, and I'm glad you are as well.

I heard this song during Second Sky and I couldn’t stop sobbing. I recently lost my mom after her suffering for 2 years in a persistent vegetative state. I still think back to those pivotal moments and how I could’ve helped her in that moment instead of just doubting myself. I never saw this day coming, but I’m lucky I was able to receive some closure before my mom fell into this condition. Mom, I miss you dearly. All those memories that we shared, from you scolding me to come home earlier, to me sitting on your lap drunk crying about some girl…those memories are the things that offer me comfort and will help me keep moving forward. In 5 years, I’m going to be the same age as when you married Dad. Keep watching over me as I become an adult, yeah? Love you forever, and thank you Porter for speaking to me through this song. ❤️

My mom passed away just over 2 months ago. She was a lovely human being, a true fighter and I loved her dearly. Today is her birthday and I couldn't help but put this song on repeat, as this strongly resonates with what she meant to me. I will continue to make you proud and all my future endeavors I will dedicate to you. May your soul rest in eternal peace - I love you now and forever. Cheers mom.

I remember being at my lowest point in my life seeing my mom cry, she was all I had and I was all she had. Now as I’m getting married and building my life I still remember how much she did for me and how I can never thank her enough for all she’s done. I don’t think I would have made it to see the best parts of life without my mom

Lyrics: I was born In a sudden embrace, i'm awake So I study the shape of your face You take what you're given "I only wanna do what's good for you" Then at once I'm checking the doors and my weight I can't keep my hands from my face I said, "Mom, I'm so sorry," She smiled and said, "Darling, I don't want you to worry cus I'm on your side for the rest of your life You'll never be alone, don't worry my child And now there's an empty room you outgrew, But I'm here for you Ooh" And I've known The feeling you've had when you're held The comfort of being unwell So something can cradle you Oh, I don't need it Oh, I won't grieve it "I'm on your side for the rest of your life You'll never be alone, don't worry my child And now there's an empty room you outgrew, But I'm here for you Ooh" I'll do right by you I only wanna do what's best for you "I'm on your side for the rest of your life You'll never be alone, don't worry my child And though there's an empty room you outgrew, I'll wait for you, Ooh" "I'm on your side for the rest of your life You'll never be alone, don't worry my child And now there's an empty room you outgrew, But i'm here for you Ooh"

You don't even need to relate this to having a mom or mother figure to feel loved listening to this. The "mom" here could be anyone you want by your side for the rest of your life. I've noticed on multiple listens I see different people in my mind when the "mom" reassures me. It's amazing how just the chorus can make you feel much better when you're feeling down.

The fact that Nurture was released in my Mom's birthday yesterday must be telling me something. This must be the reason. It was the perfect gift to her. Though, I hope things will be ultimately ok between the two of us one day. Wish me luck, guys! Hehe...

I lost my mother when I was 13. I never felt something about death because of my autism. For me, it's just something that happens and this is it... Neither bad nor good. But this song made me realize what usual people think, about memories and all. I forgot my mother's voice since, and is this... horrible ? Or just... normal ? I don't know.

Porter I just wanna say thank you for this song. My mother passed away from pancreatic cancer in august, and this song has been comforting ever since it dropped before and after she passed. She supported me through everything I wanted to do. Wether that me pursing music or me just wanna be a mail man she was there for me through it all. I miss her so much , but this songs helps me bring joy in spirit of my mom. To anyone who has their mother still tell her you love her everyday good or bad. You only get one and that's not just some cliche bullshit to say its the most truest thing I've ever felt. THANK YOU PORTER ROBINSON

When I heard this song for the first time I had this dream, I was walking through my grandparents old farm as a kid just running around and my grandma Dale was reading her cheesy romance novels smoking a cigarette. Cut to an open field with one tombstone that has all my grandmothers, great grandmothers, my great aunt ,and my foster mom on it. All of a sudden I feel a hand on my shoulder and I'm grown up and I look back and see all of them just gathered around talking and drinking coffee. I've never cried so hard in my life before because I had almost forgotten some of there faces(I don't own any of their pictures). Point it Porter not only opened up a door for me to see them but also made me realize it wasn't just my mom who was there for me but all the other moms in my life. I miss them everyday and while I don't belive in god or a heaven I belive that was closest I'll ever get. Thank you Porter.

Had to come here this Mother’s Day 2022 Lost my mom in August of 2019 to cancer, I was only 14 years of age Since then, I’ve been missing her since. Life isn’t the same without her. Especially if you lose a family member as a teenager. Everyone knows that losing your mother at such a young age tends to hurt a lot and it will take almost forever to recover. Dear Mom, I still love you and miss you. Meet you heaven soon…❤️🕊
