“From this time, unchained, we’re all looking at a different picture, through this new frame of mind, a thousand flowers could bloom, move over and give us some room. “ Came here for this. These lyrics come to my mind a lot, but I replace us with it sometimes. I think this song is about potential but for me it is also breaking through cognitive bias to make room for new ideas, new perspective I listen to this song for different reasons and at different times, but it’s definitely one of my top 20

Lena Lena If you google lyrics, any part of the lyrics from any song, 9 times out of 10 it will find the song. Try that next time you're searching for the name of a song.
@amandastandalone9 жыл бұрын
I take this song as a very deep exploration of the fact that men are just as culpable as women for the fact of how we are viewed an treated, and when we give up the identity of trying to live to please men we face a lot of hardship as far as trying to find a 'reason' to even try to express femininity when it is interpreted as weakness and sometimes, even dangerous for our safety. I believe it is a call for men to move over and maybe step in our shoes for a minute.
@TheRoarsbaby8 жыл бұрын
Amanda, I think it's also a coming of age moment for the lady who is moving on from many encounters to looking for 'the one' and is searching / begging for true intimacy and mutual vulnerability. It's always good and helpful to see both sides.....
@Justin72walker8 жыл бұрын
I mean when she begs out to "give me a reason" this song drips sex like no other song I know... and I can't put my fumble finger on why or how, it's the whole, the cry for "tenderness" "no matter if you cry" that guitar solo at 2:07 is total bliss. "Sow a little tenderness, no matter if you cry." If I could ever find a woman strong enough to realy espouse these sentiments, then I could find a woman worthy of my love. Only problem is, most women think they want a Man like this, but when the rubber hits the road, they want to fall back on the old stereotype of grunt aggressive cave man. No matter how progressive a woman wants to think she is she still falls back on the old brute strongman, which is a hard roll for me to play. I just want to "Show a little tenderness" that's where my strength lies, I just want you to feel like you're a Woman.
@jolenaddy7 жыл бұрын
Nah, I don't think most women fall for the "old brute strongman". That's a stereotype that some guys use to avoid looking into themselves. Tenderness is good. Making a lady do all the emotional labour in the relationship, not so much. Gender roles are a joke anyways.

This is the beauty of Portishead. They don't print their lyrics in their albums and leave it up to the listener to decide what each song is about. For me, this song represents the injustice of prostitution, from a prostitutes point of view she is crying out for something more from life. Sexual organs should not be used as commodity or for profit to pimps. It also represents the awakening of the mind; the realisation of one's reality, the preservation of the soul and survival. What keeps prostitutes in the 'business' of sex? Its 99% not for the 'love' of it but because they lack of options and education to earn money other ways and also due to oppression. We are moving forwards to equality and away from explotation of human trafficking but it is a massive global issue that is not seriously looked at - It is a failure.
