I was convinced this was one of the bleakest albums from Bristol. Then I heard Maxinquaye, and I thought this has to be it. Then I heard Portishead (1997), and I was pleading for mercy. Then I heard Mezzanine and my soul finally died, somewhere between the kick and the snare. This is beautiful, frighteningly dark music.

Thank you, oh, thank you, Portishead! Ms.Gibbon's voice is not only haunting as per usual, but ghostly, bewitching, maddening. The music and arrangement - the same. Together they can dig through to the very core of the mind, the heart, the gut, and hold them, and shake them, and awaken what I can only describe as primitive, raw feelings that are unsettling because they are strange and new, and yet must be familiar as they come from within. And to think i had been to Bristol three times, and not gone ten miles on to Portishead! Curses!

I was lucky. I had a friend who was a radio DJ back in the late 80's up until he moved in 95'. He used to give me radio promo CD's all the time. Stuff that wasn't released yet. Nobody had heard of Portishead yet. It was in late 1993. I was under Island records, or Mercury, I can't remember, as the CD, along with a ton of others are in storage. Back then, if you had a big name label backing you, you really must've had talent. So, I popped it into the car CD, and he told me to first listen to Sour Times. I was fucking blown away. I thought it was perfect for the time, because "Grunge" was in full swing, but, there were other artists out there, that played different stuff, and I knew there would be a following. I was a bit worried that they had blown their load in one CD. As even the songs that weren't hits, were still good. Glad I was wrong. Totally different band, and genre of music than Portishead, "The Outfield", their first CD, like every song on it, was a "Best Of", and I always thought that, it's going to be nearly impossible to out do, their old album. I was right. Their 2nd album had one really good song, and the rest sucked. Fucking greedy record companies. "Lets not hold some definite hits, that these guys have, for a future album, lets milk this cow right now, for all she's worth." Never thinking about future profits.
