Catherine the Great went down in history as one of the longest-reigning and wisest monarchs on the Russian throne. Under her rule, the borders of the empire were expanded, and more than 100 new cities were built.
Of no less interest is the personal life of the empress, which influenced her political decisions. Throughout her reign, she had many favorites, which, incidentally, was an extremely common practice in the 17th-18th centuries among European rulers. But all these monarchs could not boast of such a large number of lovers as Catherine II had: according to various sources, she had from 12 to 25 favorites. She was in a relationship with many of them for several years, parting mainly due to incompatibility of characters.
Many of Catherine's lovers - even those who cheated on the Empress - received truly "royal" gifts after the end of the novel. They received colossal "compensation" from the master's shoulder, high titles, as well as luxurious estates outside the capital.
We decided to briefly look into the past and show you what the very men looked like, for whom the great empress sighed.
