I worked in the tricorn from 1984-5..amazing place..it was really alive.I was sad to see it go..I'll never forget that area at that time..it made me happy.

Getting on for 25 years ago now and it's fair to say the whole area has deteriorated. The Tricorn was demolished in 2004 and to date all that has replaced it is a very expensive car park. Allders/Debenhams closed down taking away the major department store in Commercial Road. Then the removal of the food court within Cascades has created a featureless shopping mall. The success of Gunwharf Quays nearby was probably the final nail in the coffin for the city centre.

Even ABBA couldn't save this footage from looking like a concrete nightmare, overcrowded and generally depressing...and that was 22 years ago. Its got a lot worse in recent years, you can't move, anywhere with vegetation or nature is built upon and as for street parking! Terrible!

Very much so and we thought life was quick and ever-changing then which it was....little did our naive minds know what would hit us come 2000 and beyond. I was born in 1991 so can just remember Portsmouth like this well enough as I was a streetwise kid. Much simpler times.

The Tricorn Centre was never maintained. It was left deteriorating for decades. Dark, damp and mouldy. If it was made from materials that didn’t erode like concrete, I think it would have survived.

I used to busk in the high street with my Sax in the early 90s. Had a great time. Sold loads of tapes. Grew up in Portsmouth. That whole high street was adrift with my music at that time. Not loud, but drifting through the high street. Ahhhh. Memories.

Does anyone remember the old comic shop (might have been Mondo Comics?) that used to be upstairs inside what I think must have been the Tricorn market? Don't remember the exact year, but would have been late 80's/early 90's. Stalls downstairs, and some shops above.
@dangermace113 жыл бұрын
Yes I remember the comic shop upstairs. The only reason I ever went inside the tricorn really. The stalls downstairs had people and stuff everywhere. It was manic.

It's a great place now. I've moved around a lot in my life, Army brat, but this city is really the only place I call home. Moved their in 2004. I remember it much more livelier even 5 years after this was filmed. I had many great times there. My brother lives there now. I kinda miss the place. Would live to go back someday soon.

@@PieAndChips You say that like it's a bad thing. Without portsmouth uni I'm P sure the town centre would look probably the same as it did in this video. Typical thick pompey locals that don't understand how much money the university injects into the local economy. If I lived in Portsmouth I'd much rather see an international student on the street instead of a benefits-scrounging chav.

Am I correct in thinking that there were some residential flats in the Tricorn building?
@simonpaul58243 жыл бұрын
Yes, there was in the early stages, but they had severe damp issues and the residents were moved out, so most of the time the tricorn was there they were empty. I don't think there were many of them which seem quite strange as to why they only built a few.

I was only 3 when this video was recorded but I can still remember the tricorn. It was there until 2004. Other than the demolishion of the tricorn, the area has changed very little in these 20 years.

Good video. It captures what a bleak and drear place The Tricorn was from the off. Brutalist architecture is fine, but this example in Pompey just never cut it.
@Tmuk22 жыл бұрын
Yeah I agree. I love brutalist architecture, but seeing it here it looked absolutely dreadful. I don't think they appreciated how much maintenance a building like that would need when it was first built. With a brick building it'll need re-pointing every 50 years or so, but you'd need to jet-wash the concrete every 5 at least, replace faded perspex panelling etc. Looked great on the drawing table.

interesting viewing. Just looking at the average build of most of the people male and female in this video. I think it is fair to say most appear to have a relatively healthy 'body mass index'. Compare that to recent videos on KZbin of Commercial Road and Cascades, where you will find the majority look like Wayne and Waynetta Slob. Remember when ''does my bum look big in this'' was a concern of how one looked. Rather than todays version, ''I must stuff more fast food down my neck and sit on my arse and do F**k all exercise'' so they can look like some No-Mark Celeb and post pix on 'soshall meeja' Right, I'm off down Gunwharf mush.................. .
