Here is the deal, Ronaldo and Pepe won their county a major trophy in 2016 and it was the first in their history. Portugal hasn't been a powerhouse historically, so they may not have won a WC, but that Euro win was extremely important and something the next generation of players can chase. People that hate Ronaldo will blame him and the media talking heads are already playing him for Portugal losing when they lost to a contending team in penalties. They didn't lose to a lesser team or bow out in the group stage or knockouts, they freakin' lost to France in penalties, but all of sudden Portugal were favorites if Ronaldo didn't play? Nonsense. The hate won't stop even when he retires because they hate a guy with so much confidence in himself who has been able to win team titles on top of his individual accomplishments. They can't call him all flash and no substance because his teams have all been successful in Europe and hopefully he can do the same for Al Nassr before he hangs it up. Ronaldo is finished with the Euros and likely will not play in the WC. The penalty shootouts this year for Ronaldo have been brutal (cost him King's Cup title and trips to AFC Semis and Euro semis). It simply wasn't meant to be and that is fine. Life will go on for Ronaldo and his legacy will continue to grow as he finishes his career.

You are right, France is the team to beat cause they truly are unbeaten for the past 8 years in tournements, they did loose to Portugal at the last minute in extra time in 2016 but otherwise they only lost in penalties, switzerland freak accident from being way too relaxed in 2021(which I think made them way stronger, cause they really dont underestimate, loose focus anymore) and the final against argentina, btw loosing in penalties shoot out is not considered a loss in the rules of the game, it is just a way of "declaring" a winner, but in FIFA rulebook it is a draw which makes sense since the old way of having a winner was to play another match which is impossible now with tv and so many games and delays that would happen.

I'll be real. It's sad to see Ronaldo and Pepe go out this way. The reality, however, is that Ronaldo has not grown up as a person. He was not ready to pass the baton to the other players on the team. He squandered every set piece over the last 2 games in a desperate attempt to be in the newspaper headlines when there are STATISTICALLY better set piece takers on the team that him during every game. You can't talk about the sadness of going out on penalties when Portugal won on penalties in the last game. It's been an embarassing tournament for Ronaldo who refuses to grow up as a player and not be the centre of attention at all times. That is why Portugal did not do enough. The man wouldn't even let someone else have an opportunity to shine when they were confirmed through top of the group, he still wanted his moment. This should be a wake up call and nothing else.

The parts that’s the worse is that France hasn’t scored a single goal in active play but Portugal have. Pepe just had an incredible and I mean phenomenal tournament. The truth is that our national team played 5 games at the Euro's with 10 players on the field. Thank you to them for making it this far, Pepe was a beast, Dias/Vitinha/Palhinha/Mendes/Costa all had great tournaments, especially Vitinha, by far our best player. And please stop with the "Ronaldo put us on the map", we had phenomenal talent before/during and after his tenure. He's been great, but its time to hangup the international boots, like last year. His attitude and presence is no longer needed on this team. Obrigado por tudo, mas ja chega. Also, sad to see Pepe go out this way, he gave everything today n all tournament.

@@JoseAbreuu here’s the problem, the game plan from the first minute was : get this match to penalties, Costa would handle it. Nobody in the Portugal team cared about anything else, no route to goal, just possession and eventually penalties, we all thought getting to penalties was going to be the hard part but we forgot that penalties aren’t a given and that we actually have to score to advance. If we were going to loose anyway we might as well have gone to hell with possession, pressured our chances and taken those corners well.
