Do you need to pass a Portuguese language test when you apply for your permanent residency or is that just for citizenship, thank you, great video by the way x
@ExpatWell2 жыл бұрын
I have never seen anything about language requirements for permanent residency. To be fair the language requirement for citizenship is very low (A2 level) and most people should be able to reach that level in under three months without too much effort.

Very good and succinct video. As a retiree, health care is important. If you receive a D7 visa, are you eligible for the national health care insurance program or will you have to purchase some sort of private insurance. Thanks.
@ExpatWell3 жыл бұрын
When you apply for the D7 visa and first settle in, in Portugal you will need to do so using an international health insurance plan. However, once you have moved to Portugal and have had your appointment with SEF and received your residence permit you can switch to Portugal's national public system, a local private insurance plan or a combination of the two. Somethings to keep in mind for your temporary insurance is that it will need to cover your initial stay in Portugal under the D7 (i.e. about 4 months) provide coverage for Portugal/Schengen zone and I believe cover at least €30,000 euros worth of medical expenses.

Hi, I am a freelancer doing online marketing for a company I'm the UK for last 3 month. Not sure which Route to go for. But your video is quite helpful. In D7 do I have to show self employed tax return? As you know in the UK we do the tax return after a year for work. Much appreciate your help

Thank you for the video. Does the six consecutive months or eight non-consecutive months all need to be within Portugal or can you travel within Schengen without it “counting against” you away time? If non-consecutive time, is it by calendar year or eight months within the first twelve?
@ExpatWell3 жыл бұрын
You should be able to freely travel within Schengen during this time since they can't really track that you are outside the country since there aren't any border checks within Schengen. Regarding the calendar year vs first 12 months I am not sure what the rule is but most other countries calculate these things based off when you first enter the country not the calendar year

Hi thanks for the info! for the criminal record do they require both or just from country of residency? ( both meaning -> 1. from my country 2. from country of residency )
@ExpatWell2 жыл бұрын
They normally just refer to 'country of origin' which I normally interpret as your country of citizenship. If you have spent a significant time in another country I would double check with your local Portuguese embassy just to make sure.

Thanks so much mate. Is it a must to have a Portuguese bank account before applying for the D7 from our country of application?
@ExpatWell3 жыл бұрын
My understanding is that you need to open a Portuguese bank account before making your visa application at your local consulate. Although I suggest contacting both your nearest consulate as well as one of the Portuguese banks that allow non residents to open accounts from abroad before proceeding so that you have a complete picture of what needs to be done before you proceed with your application. I personally find the process a bit counterintuitive as it would be more logical to do these things after having applied for the visa but hey I am not the one who makes up these rules. Good luck with your application!

Short and sweet! Other investment can include 401k, 403b, cash value whole life insurance, ROTH IRA, brokerage account, checking/saving bank accounts? Wondering if we can keep our telework jobs, wife and I, but apply for D7 and provide only our “passive income” if all those apply?
@ExpatWell3 жыл бұрын
I would suspect that this won't qualify as "passive" income since you likely won't be withdrawing from those accounts in order to cover your living expenses in Portugal. There are some other countries which provide visas based off of showing proof of funds in which case things like investment accounts, or savings account could work. Since you say you want to keep your teleworking jobs have you considered applying for a digital nomad visa? Malta and Croatia have ones that might make sense for you if you want to live in Europe. Also quite a few countries in the Caribbean have them as well and they normally allow you to qualify based off the income you receive from your remote job.

@@ExpatWell we do have cash value while life insurance which we withdraw from monthly and fund. Covers everything. It’s a scheme in which we are our own bankers and never rely on third party lenders. I think that could actually work. It’s an asset. There is substantial funds available to us 24/7. The ROTHs could also be pulled but would never need to be with our life insurances. Time to research a little more. Thank you!

Hi there, thanks for this. Could you advise how best to navigate providing a 6 or 12 month rental contract as part of the D7 application. I was hoping to purchase a property in Portugal soonest after obtaining SEF approval. Could I cancel the rental contract when securing a property and what are the requirements to do so with the least financial impact? Thanks for your time, joy and blessings :-) Caroline

Thank you very much for the video, it was really helpful. I’m a music composer who makes regular income from streaming platforms like Spotify, so I’m location independent. Do you think I would be eligible for the D7 visa? Thanks! :)
@ExpatWell3 жыл бұрын
Yes I would suspect that you would be eligible as long as you can show that your music royalty income is over the required threshold.

After getting the first 2 years residence permit , can I work in another European countries ?
@ExpatWell2 жыл бұрын
As a non EU citizen your residence permit would be limited to Portugal itself although you would be free to travel within Schengen on this type of residence permit. The right to work in other European countries freely is reserved for EU citizens. So if you would like to work in another EU country you would be better off trying to get residency in that country or wait until after you have gained citizenship in a EU country.

The D7 visa is meant for passive income what you are describing would best be suited for something like a digital nomad visa. In Europe Croatia, the Czech Republic, Estonia, Georgia, Malta, Germany and Iceland offer these types of visas
