ROUTINE: AP and OBLIQUE
------------------------------------------------- ----------------------------------------
♦ AP:
►Patient Positioning:
In supine position; with a pillow under the head; bend knee and position surface
plantar (sole) of the affected foot over the RI.
►Party Position:
• Extend (plantflex) the foot, but keep the plantar surface firm over the RI.
• Align and center the long axis of the foot in relation to the RC and the long axis of the portion of the RI that will be
exposed. (Use cushions, if necessary, to prevent the RI from sliding across the table.)
• In the case of immobilization, bend the opposite knee and support it against the affected knee for support.
►RC:
• Angle the RC 10° posteriorly (towards the heel) with the RC perpendicular to the
metatarsals (see Note).
• Direct the RC to the base of the third metatarsal.
------------------------------------------------- -----------------------------------------------
♦ OBLIQUE:
► Patient Positioning:
In supine or sitting position; bend the knee, with the plantar surface of the foot on the table; rotate the
body slightly to the opposite side to be examined.
►Party Position:
• Align and center the long axis of the foot to the RC and the long axis of the exposed portion of the RI.
• Rotate the foot medially to place the plantar surface between 30° to 40° to the plane of the RI (see
Observation). The general plane of the dorsum of the foot must be parallel to the RI and perpendicular to the RC.
• Use a 45° radiolucent support block to prevent movement. Use cushions, if necessary,
to prevent the RI from sliding on the table.
►RC:
• CR perpendicular to RI, directed to the base of the third metatarsal.
