Im on board with making common backgrounds legal. Its what I assumed was right when I started on the format.

Now that you mention it, it's kind of weird how the common backgrounds are so good.

They are a perfect fit for the format and allows for more aggressive strategies to exist.

I think it's fair for Common backgrounds to be legal.

As I was listening to this, I was reminded of what is arguably the most important reason to not allow common cards in the Command Zone of PDH: Simplicity of the format's explanation. Then, I started to think of a comprehensive sentence that describes PDH, and I realized it's not as simple as: Uncommon Creature Commander, Deck of Commons. It's more convoluted than that because of partners, and backgrounds, which are enchantments...

@saltberry15 We definitely agree. We all want it to be as simplistic as possible. Sadly this would be an easy jump for the format. We completely understand that will only further complicate stuff. Ironically this would still be easier that normal commander.

If WotC returns to DnD again and the common backgrounds got included as uncommons on a bonus sheet, would that open access? Are there any common rarity commanders that would be worth playing in cPDH if the rules changed to allow them?

We take common upshifts too allow for more decks!

Common backgrounds are interesting, for sure. But I think Companion could be down-shifted to Uncommon and bring some interesting combinations to the format. Obviously Lutri might be problematic, but with the 'fixed' companion tax, I feel it could still work.

That's an interesting thought but companions where already an issue for Wizards and the 3 mana to add them to hand might be backbreaking.

@@commontheorycpdh from my understanding, they weren't widely liked (I don't know if those feelings are from before or after the fix). What would the issue with putting them to hand be? There aren't as many "free" spells to feed them to. And most combos are already telegraphed.

I honestly thought they were legal cause of the rags to riches tourney last year where Abdel + Candlekeep Sage got top 4; guess that was only 1 tourney though

It was allowed there because the TO allowed to be played. Each Riches to Rags has had Common Backgrounds legal.
