Eggers screwed up because he wanted both….pure evil and predatory like Nosferatu but also soft enough Nosferatu that it would self delete itself for Ellen. Didn’t work because he did not develop Nosferatu correctly. I was disappointed.
@daesgatling13458 күн бұрын
Count Orlock is more terrifying than Pennywise. He's a predator, he's a rapist. He's a version of Dracula whose attack on Mina is supposed to be a metaphor for rape. He assaults Ellen for years and it stops when she meets Thomas....so he lures Thomas away to isolate her and assault her again. When she fights back, refuses him and shoots down his attempt to tell her she wants him, he threatens the lives of everyone around her so she'll 'willingly' give herself over to him. He's terrifying because he's an appetite, he's terrifying because there are men like that.

Not convincing at all. If you really believe all that then you would have been unimpressed and unmoved by the ending. A lot of people were. The ending was very anticlimactic and meh because Nosferatu was the biggest flaw on Eggers part. All the things you described abt Nosferatu makes it even more unbelievable that it would deliberately kill itself for Ellen. A predator so evil does not feed itself to death. Flawed. So it makes Orlok very gimmicky in this film, not frightening at all. 😢
@the_plot_twist_246 күн бұрын
@@idliketosayI wouldn’t say that he deliberately killed himself for Ellen. It was pretty clear that it was his lust and greed that did him in. Ellen took advantage of that to save everyone else, as she was already dead as Orlock entered her bedroom.

Totally agree. I appreciated the fact you could still see aspects of him that reflected what he looked like as a man in his day. That was an awesome touch. Still comparable to man, but not a man anymore. It felt so raw. He was grotesque and believable. Not some monster with red eyes and bat wings.
@Trassel2425 күн бұрын
Yeah, while I love the OG Max Schreck Orlok, this Orlok was just extremely creepy and seemed a lot more on the “living corpse” side of things than I’ve ever seen vampires. Even the way he speaks sounds like his lungs and throat aren’t really working anymore, and possibly decaying inside his body. The way he looked, moved and acted gave me the constant feeling of “this is a corpse, put it back in the ground, this is not supposed to be alive”.

"You don't belong with the living," Orlok tells Ellen in the extinct Dacian language at the beginning of the film. This brief introduction conveys the entire narrative and its conclusion: she has made a pact with Orlok, sealing her fate to be with him forever. "I've never been so happy," she declares. From the very start, she has been like the living dead, merely waiting for Orlok to fulfill their union. What a beautiful poetic film, with Orlok looking like the decayed Vlad, the Impaler.

The issue with Dracula is that.. They swifted up so many things, from the books, to movies.. And even video-games. I do remember reading the book and thinking about how (even if it's no said clearly) Mina could be seen as a women with Female Histeria (16/17th century). On a Dracula video-game, the part 2, Mina is taken into an asylum, where she got hypnosis to stay in contact with count Dracula.. And sometimes she wakes up screaming. There is also the weird things with Dracula gouls in the modern representationd (3 semi-naked woman) that are said to be.. Present to lure man, but plot wise it was just almost never explained. Dracula in itself was never horrific, but more like a dark tales. Combining some poetic elements, with heavy Gothic influences.

Maybe a scene or two towards the end, but I just found myself not really caring about the count anymore as time went on. Yes he was scary, but not that scary. I think it does a great job capturing the vibe of the original and modernizing it, but people should be aware that the aesthetics were one of the biggest reasons the original was great. It was from expressionist German films where the cinematography would go against reality but reflect the emotions of the characters. I think Eggers did that so well
@gina95757 күн бұрын
I completely disagree with the pacing criticism! And Orlock not being scary enough - he felt ever present throughout the whole film, even when he wasn’t on screen and that’s what made him terrifying. His obsession was terrifying. As for the pacing/basic storyline - I can assume this is pretty accurate to the original? It’s been a long time since I’ve seen the 1920s movie but I’m sure it’s a pretty straightforward film - so I like that this remake appears to honor that. For how historic Nosferatu is as a film - if Robert went off the handle and added so many unexpected elements/extra horror it probably would have been seen as unfaithful to the original? Which remakes aren’t always 1 for 1 shots and concepts but I appreciate it for a classic film like this. Tho like I said, it’s been a while since I’ve seen the original. Definitely one of my favorite films I’ve seen in a while! 5/5 stars ⭐️

MINOR SPOILERS A few thoughts on the movie: - I was disappointed...sort of. Like Rocklin Graves said in his review and what Sarah is getting at, the movie is very stylistically poignant and Eggers didn't hedge any of his decisions. It's a bold commitment to an exact work of art and executed flawlessly. I went in, like most, unintentionally expecting...something. And this was not whatever I expected. It was what Robert Eggers wanted it to be, and, like The Witch and The Lighthouse, requires multiple viewings under exclusively its own context to really appreciate. I strongly suggest any viewers to get 2-3 watches in before committing to an opinion. - Maybe the most beatiful horror movie I've ever seen - Maybe the most beautiful movie I've ever seen - It IS horror, straight up. Serious moments of terror. - The castle dining room scene is etched into my psyche forever. Incredible. - The performances of Skarsgard, Hoult, Depp, and Dafoe left me speechless. I can't even desribe how good they were. - The design of Orlok was weird at first. Like most, I don't know how to feel about the mustache. But, again, when I shift my perspective to consider the movie under its own context, it works. Like really well. Eggers didn't want Orlok to look like a traditional vampire/Nosferatu. He wanted Count Orlok to look like a 15th century Transylvanian noble that died and refused to leave, and has been turning into a Monster for the last 400 years. NAILED it. - I loved it wholy and I can't wait to see it again and again and again. A MASTERPIECE that should soon plant itself into the ouevre of iconic horror films.

No professional would do that as the art of B&W cinematography is completely different and you can't just, "Decolorize" a film . This cinematographer took great effort in getting it to look precisely the way that they want. To see a great example, you want to see "the Lighthouse" where they used a specific aspect ratio and a cyan filter to get that specific look on the B&W film.

They actually intentionally used a cyan filter on most scenes to make it look like it is black and white while keeping some of those pale blues. The only shots that aren’t dark and pale like that are shots lit by flames when the orange takes over. So they already made very intentional choices with the color grade to make it feel black and white while keeping some color. It wouldn’t make sense to just put a black and white filter on it. It’s much easier to do that if it’s filmed on digital which Egger’s does not do. He uses film.

This is absolutely the scariest version of Nosferatu. And yes of course the ending was predictable. ITS LITERALLY THE MOST FAMOUS VAMPIRE STORY EVER. It’s in our collective unconscious. They couldn’t have changed that without changing the story. And it’s an adaptation. You can’t change that much. The idea isn’t that it’s jump scares and it’s not going to make sense compared to modern horror. Just go watch the original and it’ll make sense.
@nathanielbacon26618 күн бұрын
Disagree. I think the 1922 film is still scarier than this. And so is Bram Stoker's Dracula.

I loved it! I think the story was a true dark romance that totally consume her with a monster actually being monstrous. I also like to think of Count Orlok as a metaphor of her internal struggles as a women in that time period so for me it's not a scary or sad ending but more a happy ending for Ellen where she finally embrace the "impure and ugly" side of her after spending years fighting against it

I had a bit of an iffy theatre experience seeing this movie (people on their phones, talking to their neighbour, kicking seats, etc.), despite that I enjoyed the film immensely, and now want to see it again in a less packed theatre so I can fully immerse myself in the film. I personally loved Count Orlok's character design, and that it didn't imitate the previous films.

I personally loved it and was shocked when someone in the group I was with said he thought it was too boring afterwards. I couldn't understand his opinion, bc I was entranced the entire time and literally didnt feel the length. I do agree Orlok looked a bit goofy, but apparently his look is actually pretty historically accurate and based on real people of the time, and we all know Eggers is BIG on historical accuracy. So I do kinda get it, in the end.
@madeleinec11078 күн бұрын
Personally, what made Orlok terrifying to me was his predatory nature - I know this often recurs as a theme in vampire stories. Yes, he was physically this putrescent & odd-looking creature, but the acting from Skarsgård alongside this is what really turned my stomach. The use of sound & light was especially horrific. Totally fair review, though! I am just a huge fan of gothic horror- I love the terror that arises from the unknown in this genre.

I loved the film, the whole sequence with Thomas as he arrives to the castle and meets Orlock I found so creepy and so well done I actually think orlock was more effective the less you saw of him. I didn’t love the design but I did watch an interview and Eggers said he was looking more at what it would look like if an actual Eastern European nobleman turned into this creature and I definitely get the concept. I thought the movie was beautiful and haunting but yes slightly too long I was getting antsy by the end. Still a beautiful movie

I really enjoyed it, I want to try to see it again in theaters maybe this weekend. I agree that Orlok’s design wasn’t what I expected. I liked the impending doom feeling of him in the shadows and I think Eggers did a great job of building up the tension. But I feel like the buildup wasn’t paid off in regard to how he looked.

enjoying your review of this, i’ve been waiting to see you talk about it! but i think this was deserving of the hype. also i think a lot of people are complaining bc they thought it was going to be a more typical monster movie but this is very gothic lit. if that’s not someone’s cup of tea that’s fine but i think it’s really weird to say it’s bad because that’s not what they wanted.

I do have to say that this is perhaps the Only vampire movie I have ever seen that genuinely terrified me. I've seen many vampire and many horror films, but Nosferatu had me peeking through my fingers in some parts. I think all of the effects and acting were just enough. any more either way and it would have felt unbalanced. I understand where you're coming from though.

I pretty much agree with everything you said! Acting was great. It looked beautiful! Only downside was bills look… Didn’t particularly love that. I agree they could’ve made him a little bit more freaky looking. And although the movie is true to the original and is a little slow part of me still wanted it to maybe have a little bit morehorror or frightening moments. I’d probably also give it a four out of five!

I find your interpretation so interesting. Count Orlok was very effective for me, especially when we first truly meet him in the castle. Something about that tension and the voice genuinely triggered my fight or flight. I honestly appreciate the slow burn especially in the castle. I felt I was being held captive with thomas. I really enjoyed the romancism. This movie reminded me of, the show Penny Dreadful which has a very similar story line. And the short story Rappaccini's Daughter. I loved how the acting was a little over the top at times. I almost felt like I was watching a play. I think this was the first Romantic, true gothic film i've watched. And I absolutely adore it, its very cool.

This film was classic Eggers and I loved it! I disagree about the Count, I loved the way he looked, vampires are dead humans, they shouldn’t look too over the top imo. Also I felt DREAD when he was on screen, but not fear necessarily. I agree that it’s a bit slow but that doesn’t bother me.

My one major gripe is that I honestly feel like we spent too much time watching Lily Rose Depp being posessed. Yeah ok, it was freaky and she did great but how many scenes do I need to see of her convulsing? I think they spent too long on those moments in comparison to the story beats the possession scenes were punctuating. I think the characterization of Orlok was wonderfully scary and fresh, very different from most adaptations and arguably scarier than Dracula from the book. I think they could have done more with him, but I appreciate what we got. Also, I LOVED the mustache, perfect addition.

I literally just watched Nosferatu today in the cinema and as someone who read the Dracula novel, I enjoyed it a lot more. I loved the artistic shots and the camera angles and Lily’s scenes where she’s possessed really creeped me out. There was only one scene with Count Orlok that creeped me out, but otherwise it was mostly Lily’s possession scenes. Unfortunately the person I went with absolutely hated it but honestly I can understand it’s not for everyone. It’s a really atmospheric and beautiful movie and I enjoyed it!

I gave it a 9/10 when I first watched it. The more it was in my head, the more I realize the mustache is a huge reason why I didnt enjoy it. It's a solid 7/10 since it's a legitimate pain to look at the mustache. If he didn't have the mustache, I'd keep it at 9. Huge fumble in the actual monster if I'm honest.

i agree w you on pacing and LOVINGGG the intro scene. i wish there was more of that horror element too bc i watched that and thought “omg im in for a ride” and then it just…. didn’t give me that. i’m excited to rewatch it for sure. a critique of mine was the perception of time in the movie! the husband’s journey was supposed to take 6 weeks and the film made it seem like he traveled so quickly. i feel the effect of time could’ve been portrayed better
@Trassel2425 күн бұрын
I loved how Orlok’s castle had this nightmarish quality to it, where it didn’t seem to make sense in how it was laid out, how it was dimensioned, etc. Like in the nightmares where the corridors are always long enough for the monster to catch up with you. I was surprised at how blunt the film was in the whole “vampires as metaphor for SA” sense. This one, it’s not metaphor, it’s not subtext, it’s plain text and it can be quite difficult to watch because of that. The lack of jump scares etc is great, and the creeping dread is also great. I think maybe you have to have a certain history to really be scared by it, and if you’re lucky enough to not have such a history, it won’t be all that scary.
@danarodriguez38163 күн бұрын
just want to start by saying i’m adding my two cents about the film not hating on your opinion! the way i see it, the horror elements, pacing, and plot were all perfectly balanced for me. when i think of this movie, i don’t see it as trying to just be a modern horror movie but as aiming to utilize modern horror and cinematography elements to bring to life one of the oldest pieces of horror there is. nosferatu is so heavily derived from dracula and this movie has so many beats that are almost identical to bram stoker’s dracula while still managing to have its own themes and ideas. it’s an ode to everything unique and beautiful about the vampire genre. i have never seen the original nosferatu and intend to watch it to see how much was pulled from there as well, but you can really feel the way everyone involved with this project wanted to honor the aesthetic and appeal of early vampire media. the criticism i most agree with is some of the characters feel a little surface level and someone who is coming in without intimate knowledge of their previous iterations it might find it hard to connect with them.

I thought it is AMAZING. What a great way to start the year! I just got back from the movie theater and, WOW, Nosferatu blew me away. The editing, the transitions, the INFINITE references, how he managed to tell so much in this little goth gem, a masterclass! Will have to rewatch to catch everything because it was a lot, amazing! I want to suck (dad joke) every reference and interpretation from this movie because I absolutely loved it. Spoilers in 3 2 1 just the beginning got me hart, immediately threw me back to a queen’s song called somebody to love, the lyrics are on point of what I felt at one point of my life like her summoning “Nosferatu” also Is she a necromancer? is she a witch? is she sookie stackhouse??? :) or is she just going insane while the bubonic plague ravages Europe? The “dark realm” was all a conjuration? I don’t remember the words each character says in key scenes… the comic pipe. the mindless signing of a contract one don’t even can read just for money! the absolute nailing the historical context. some more thoughts the dogs seemed to me a reference to Howard Thurman “three hounds of Hell:” fear, hypocrisy, and hatred. also the latin ceremonial language used at the beginning and at the end I interpreted as a jab at how religion and also language are used as tools of control, specifically at the end when Nosferatu says in Latin how they must unite in soul, and flesh to become one, this is basically the holy trinity… it’s sooo much for just one viewing!!

I don't really watch movies based on who are the actors or director, so I didn't know it was a Robert Eggers movie until the very end, but I was constantly remembering The Witch throughout due to it being an outstanding period movie for me, and The Witch is my favorite horror movie! So at the end I realized I really like Robert Eggers. I actually thought he was the perfect choice to do this remake, because his style and cinema interests/influences marry too well with the whole concept. He fully commits to the aesthetics and period, focusing not only on the horror elements, but also costumes, makeup, casting, horror style, vocabulary and language, and so much more. Focusing on the horror elements now, I didn't think the movie needed "more horror", I thought the plague and the killings were really well done, and he even added jumpscares that suited the style very well, without turning it into a cliché. In my opinion, he updated a classic, while still maintaining its main style, aesthetic and essence. He also gave his own little spin without changing the whole story, in a way that added a new layer to it.

I totally agree with all you said. My biggest issue with this movie was that we never connect with Ellen, they don’t allow us to see the true horror that she feels. We need more details of her life, how she experience being with him and the horror she feels. We don’t have a true background of her life either. So I really didn’t care when she died. That’s the biggest flaw of the movie.

I went to see this movie without watching any trailers and I never really watched the original or remakes. I thought it was just gonna be another silly horror remake, especially being a remake of a really old movie at this point, so I wasn't THAT interested, just went to see it because my friends wanted to. It caught me by surprise how much I loved the story and the style, it was one of the very few movies I thought the pacing was justified and that there were no "filler" scenes. The aesthetic really immersed me, and I usually hate period movies (especially period horror), but I thought it was done really well and not in a boring way, filled with stereotypes. I was actually surprised with the ending, because nowadays most horror movies put some sort of happy ending, and I thought it was a really sad ending. Also, I thought Orlok was really terrifying, exactly because he's man-like but all decomposing and stuff, and we only see shadows of him most of the time.
