I'm glad they have aftermarket accessories for Zippos yet they keep their originality and let the customer decide what they want. I love their simplicity and durability. Tip: you can keep flints under the felt pad as well 😉👍

Two things: You're WAY overfilling your Zippo. You need to stop before you see saturation in the cotton. If you do this and have it in your pocket, it will leak and leave you with a rash on your leg. I would guess you're supposed to remove the felt pad at the bottom and replace it with the gasket. By packing it on top of the felt, you're squeezing the cotton below and essentially wringing it out, making the lighter hold less fluid.

Many people have asked that over the years but they just have no need to make the zippo better, the same design has been around since 1932 with only minor changes I would love to see the classic zippo design stay the same BUT I wish they had a factory version similar to this with a sealed bottom of the insert and a fill area with a screw and o-ring to keep it sealed maybe sold as a special version or something they can make a KILLING if they did that even if they were $50 each they would sell...Even at $100 each plenty of collectors and some users would still buy one, haha

There was a guy who used old used bicycle intertubes for this to make a tight seal around the entire case when not in use. Im guessing the bottom plate leaks a bit due to the door it needed a screw in plug and as for sealing the whole thing well they aint like the peanut lighters and so they actually need an airproof case to fit around them ideally

@@edi9892 yep your right thats why alot of peanut lighters encapsulate the entire thing air tight. Due the tiny bit they can hold is what they intend to keep till ya use it. you can get sevral short burns out of one fill however its not an ideal lighter for most people. Its an emergency lighter that works in cold conditions where a bic won't work without a few tricks to heat it up due to the nature of liquid butane speaking of encapsulated lighters they got a forever match that works on the same idea . zippo is cool for those who use a lighter alot tough some people dont like the fuel taste everything has its highs and lows a propper sized elastic band around the seam of the zippo is the best your gona do for a classic Zippo unless you do the butane retrofit

Though it's a neat idea, I don't have high hopes for it. It may reduce the rate at which the fluid evaporates by sealing up the bottom, but the fluid will still evaporate through the wick. In fact, I'd say most lf the evaporation happens through the wick. The fuel might last longer, but I'm not counting on the difference being large enough to be worth the purchase.

It usually just evaporates in a tropical climate, fully saturated (some pouring out upon refill at the bottom, even) in just 4 days. I wish Zippo would fix this almost 100 year evaporation problem and update their design. I had to buy a pack of these 3 gaskets which has Zorro cotton + wick + 30 flints bundled (I something just like to make this spark for stress relieve- light or spark or fire is soothing). God bless.

At the time i was just getting into collecting, and i have an okay collection now. mainly of rare numbered ones. but the zippo i used this in was my grandads harley zippo, i believe from the 70s, i cant quite remember. This is because it was stolen along with the insert. My grandad now has dementia, and can just about remember me, but i always make sure to bring zippos to show him. and i was wondering if you still had the plasmatic insert, and if youd be willing to sell it as he always found it interesting, and he was the first person i showed it to too. so im hoping it might spark some memory, alike the zippos do. I just bought a brand new Zippo in the last year or so and I've been pretty disappointed how shoddy they're making the insides now. The cotton batting used to FILL UP the tank to the point that the absorbent end-pad just barely fit back in. Now there's a solid quarter inch of extra space at the end... this video just educated me as to why. Apparently Zippo is manufacturing their lighter to take this evapo-trapper device without making it such a tight fit.

Offhand this seems like a good idea, there's nothing wrong with trying to make the most out of your fuel. I've come at this problem from another angle, I use inexpensive naptha gas in my Zippo, I bought a gallon of Brand X camp stove fuel years ago for about 10 bucks and I'm still using that same gallon, so fuel economy isn't an issue, cost-wise, but there's still nothing wrong with trying to maximize your fuel economy.

Well a standard zippo in standard case lasts 8 days however a standard zippo insert in a sealed case can last for weeks like a Thyrm PyroVault Lighter Armor was tested for 8 weeks they say and still lit its the cheaper of the o ring gasketed cases ive seen so far they do make a war armor case in 1.4mm titanium but its pricy and yea i see why zippo doesn't sell propper cases they cost as much as a lighter it makes your 20$ lighter into a 50$ lighter or if ya go crazy and spring for highend titanium well it might be almost a 200$ lighter at that point

@@ericwhite3526 :- I bought one of the Zippo factory butane jet flame lighters (about $100.00) and it broke down, after a month or so of lighting the occasional cigar. Sent it back to Zippo (life time warranty) and it came back working just fine, but the problem apparently is in the design, and Zippo discontinued the manufacturing of that lighter. I don't carry it...not dependable...a simple $2.00 jet flame from the local smoker's shop is a better bet (I don't smoke anymore) for a "just in case" lighter.

@@blueeyeswhitedragon9839 yep thats true bic and butane lighters awsome unless its realy cold. I've had them not work on hunting trips granted you can temporarily warm them up enough to get a fire going the neat things about the traditional zippo is the naptha it works cold, it stays lit and the hand full of fidget tricks you can do with it . Down sides the fuel on a standard one is typically gone in 8 days regardless of use and well the issues you have when you over fill it. But nothing perfect

Interesting idea. I winder about the evaporation from the wick, though. I’ve toyed with the idea of using an Amish mix in my Zippo. Rather than 100% naphtha, which is as light as gasoline and evaporates just as fast, mixing the naphtha with kerosene. The naphtha would make it light quickly, but the kerosene evaporates much more slowly.

I periodically buy myself a zippo and even gave one away in the box to a good friend as a bday gift (everyone loves them, makes a great gift) so anyway, in my collection, I have old ones, new ones etc the new ones have that little hole in the bottom of the cotton that old ones didn't have and I know from experience that little hole contributes to fuel evaporation, all my new ones run out faster (when not using)

AND of cause not available in Europe. I suppose I could just make one myself by cutting it out of a sheet of rubber? No trap-door though... I still suspect the fuel mainly escapes through the wick rather than the bottom of the case, but it will be interesting to see how much this extends the lifetime of the fuel.

I, too, have been frustrated w/the fuel evap. I don't smoke so even though edc it's not for that purpose. That said, I don't have occasions to use it much but still carry it in a great leather belt holder. By using a ranger band I can extend the time to empty by about half. The test I would love to see you do is fill both and never use. Just test it every (name a day of the week) week and see how many weeks you can go before dry. Test would be to just see if it ignites. Don't need the 60 second burn for my purposes (or yours) as you stated you don't use it everyday anyway so i assume you don't smoke and light up 10 or more times a day. To truly test for the evaporation aspect....I think you should only light it to see if it will light. If you keep it going for 60 sec. it kind of defeats the purpose of an evap. test? Thanks! and I agree the extra spot for the flint is great.

So, you filled the lighter upside down in it's case to catch the fuel that dripped out from the wick, then put in a gasket to prevent the fuel in the lighter from evaporating out the bottom. Now, how does the "extra" fuel in the bottom of the case get past the gasket to be burned?

You'll never seal it completely, and you wouldn't want to. The fuel vapor expands with fairly decent pressure once a little heat is added. If you leave a can of Zippo fluid in the sun, it will bulge and distort the can badly. Putting it in your pocket isn't as bad, but I don't think you're going to stop the vapor pressure of fuel evaporation so easily. I suspect that it will just force the vapors out via the wick.
@bumpandsquish
@bumpandsquish 5 жыл бұрын
best way to prevent fuel evaporation is to cut up the thumb off of a nitrile glove so you have a 1-1.5" sleeve. slip that over the zippo case and roll it down to use and roll back up to seal. the fuel lasts for weeks, and i use the lighter multiple times a day to light my tobacco pipes. another benefit is it will help lessen the scratches to the zippo if you keep it in your pocket with other things like keys or loose change.

Just got mine today. Haven't had time to see fuel consumption comparison. However, did find that in a Zippo insert, it's a tight fit. It will fit in a Japan Continental/LDL model, not as tight of fit due to more rounded style but will seal enough to keep fluid from going to the bottom of the case. For those with that question.

I feel like these would be useless. The evaporation happens at the wick as the bottom is wedged into the case pretty tightly. Creating a seal. When I pull mine out to refill it, it makes a popping noise, like air suction has been broken.
