Are the people alive like they are living in a post apocalyptic stone age or are they extinct? I was wondering.

I always imagine that there are a few people alive, slowly heading towards a stone age as the old world decays. There's a great book by George Stewart called 'Earth Abides' that describes a small community living together after a major catastrophe very much like how I imagine.
