if it's just a material then no retopo is needed. You can also do high-poly texturing without UVs. But in the end you need to retopo if you want to drop the polycount from millions down to few thousands polys

Can you get rid of those voxel artefacts on the diagonal lines in 3d coat? Perhaps during the process of converting it to a surface model?

If you up the resolution it will smooth out but it is a forever issue with 3d coat. No way to get rid of completely
