@@Bombabingbong66exactly! Every living human being has an instinctual sense of rebellion when it comes to being given ultimatums. That is why guidance, specifically in finding a new way to live, think, cope and “deal” with their issues is definitely the better approach! The ultimatum approach is never going to produce a genuine nor a long lasting result! 😊

I know this isn’t the same at all but I use to be addicted to soda as a teen and so much that my teeth started getting incredibly sensitive, my enamel was breaking down and I was gaining weight like crazy. I just liked the taste and prickly sensation of soda but it also made me feel sh*tty because downing multiple bottles a day is obviously not good for your body. My dad would get so angry that he would threaten he was gonna kick me out or exclude me from family dinners as ‘punishment’. My mom took an entirely different approach, she took me to the store one day and bought whatever lemonade sirups (it’s kind of like kool aid but a healthier option in Europe) I wanted and bought me bottles of sparkling water. Mixing sirup with sparkling water was basically almost the same as soda. Over the next few months I would lessen my soda intake and substitute it with the sparkling lemonade mixture. I would drink these mixtures and put less sirup in a glass of sparkling water until I was able to drink it as just the water. She helped me kick my soda addiction and I’m so grateful for her understanding and patience without judging me like my dad. Guidance really is the most important factor into getting rid of an addiction even if mine was just about soda 😂

Don't always assume it's anything to do with the parents. I've known a few people, including myself who learned way more from other folks in life about how be good...and it kinda sucks that the moms (or dads) automatically get the credit. Some of us actually learn a lotta empathy from the pain inflicted by our parents on us and others. Both of mine wanna blame the other for everything bad and take credit for everything good. Folks like them should be denied the satisfaction. Next time someone tells me my parents raised me well ima say "not at all, I've just been blessed to meet some amazing people" Fr it takes a village...❤

@@chippzlemonz Baphomet* so? You think going to church, following (some) of the Bible, wearing a cross and being a Christian makes someone a good person? Never met a Christian that wasn’t a piece of shit anyway. And they have a very ugly history - if anyone deserves to be judged and hated for what they believe and how they dress, it’s them and all religions like them. Pagans, atheists and Satanists are far nicer than Christians and have murdered far fewer people. Big fvcking deal if someone has a picture of a goat on their hoodie, only someone with no common sense gets angry over that but not at Christians wearing symbols of their racist, misogynist, homophobic and dictatorship religion 🙄

I beg to differ. A LOT. He came to Tampa in 2019 and was almost an hour and twenty minutes late on stage, after all his opening acts that lasted longer than they were supposed to. When he got on stage you could tell he was so fucked up he literally wasn’t even singing. His songs were playing in the background and he would jump in every now and again, but wasn’t full on doing a chorus. We left after he played like three and a half songs cause I’m not gonna pay what I did to see you stand on stage and basically karaoke your whole set. Especially after he was late as long as he was. I’m glad he’s gotten better supposedly, from some clips now he just seems fucked up on other things. But his concert here sucked. Worst birthday present ever and it was my first really real concert at 18.

I have no idea where my husband would be right now if I didn’t give him an ultimatum years an years ago. We started dating when I was 16 an he was 18. He had issues at home growing up an he drank to deal with it I guess. He wasn’t a fun drunk though he was obnoxious or angry. I couldn’t stand him when he drank. We had a baby at 19 & 21 an not long after that I said either you don’t ever drink anymore or I can’t be with you. He has been sober since an we are now 37 & 39. He says all the time he would be dead or in prison if I didn’t do that. I refused to accept being with someone that was one person sober an another drunk. He wasn’t abusive so thankfully it didn’t cause me to get an issues from it. 4 kids an 21 years strong ❤

@@Weeks25 i love hearing success stories, I'm so glad everything worked out for your family ❤ I thought about giving my husband an ultimatum more than a few times, but I was scared to bc the opioids had ahold of him pretty hard. I was scared he'd make the wrong choice and die alone and I couldn't bear that. If things had gotten too bad , I might have left, but most of the problems we had bc of his addiction were financial. we had to struggle a lot, but it was never more than I could handle, thank God 🙏.

@@jenn2894 as a recovering heroin addict, I think you made the choice that was right for you and your partner. I started drugs at 14, heroin at 17 and spent 13 years in full blown addiction. Ultimatums usually don’t work. Most people stop supporting you emotionally, mentally, etc. I truly think if my family supported me rather than shame, judge and abuse, I would’ve quit years earlier. I started going to therapy 5-6 years ago, but I was still lost and lonely and relapsed ever other week. What changed my life was meeting my wife. She never gave ultimatums or made things harder for me. It was the first time I had real support, understanding and love, honestly in my entire life. I’ve been sober almost 5 years now. I relapse once, for a short period within the first few months of sobriety. I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t meet her. The reason ultimatums usually* don’t work is because you’re forcing someone to make a decision on your terms. When an addict chooses to get help on their own terms, it’s something they want and have decided they are ready for. When you go to rehab and say “I decided it’s time” versus “my partner/family gave me an ultimatum” it’s so much more empowering. But again, for the above commenter, there are always exceptions!

Seriously. It's usually the case that someone will give an ultimatum because they themselves are lost, have no idea how to provide any guidance, but they assume they're better/can do better.
