It's been called the most widespread miscarriage of justice in the UK.
(Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...)
Over more than a decade, hundreds of entirely innocent sub-postmasters were convicted of fraud because of a faulty IT system.
Many went to prison, others were financially ruined and some died before their names were cleared.
The government and the Post Office have promised full and fair compensation. And the head of the inquiry into the scandal is urging them to make good on their promises to pay out promptly.

So let's get this straight... the powers that be "CLAIM" it was faulty software, but they told all the 100's of sub Postmasters who had the temerity to complain about the disappearance of money into thin air that (the so called losses) are "only happening to you". What this tell me is that it was unlikely to be faulty software, that those in charge scripted their minions to gaslight the Sub Post Masters whilst electronically robbing them through the backdoor and laundering the ill gotten gain through the Bonus system; thus keeping the government happy that the Post Office was making a healthy profit. This was of course at the expense of hardworking, honest British people. No one knows where the money that the Sub Postmasters coughed up (to cover what Dubious behavior) that must have gone on at the Post Office HQ and it is likely that it will never be revealed.. What does this tell us about the British Establishment

One of the main culprits of this scandal is the failure of the system developed by Fujitsu. Currently here in Japan, we are having countless issues and scandals with the 'My Number Card' card system which is a sort of cumulative personal card to get official documents, pay taxes and soon to incorporate our health insurance card and also drivers licence. The developer of the 'My Number Card' computer system is Fujitsu.

interesting to hear we're not the only ones having trouble with that companies products. But the computer system didn't ruined all these peoples lives here by itself. The post office wasn't privatised, it is still a government owned entity. That's why this is a government enquiry and government scheme. If it were a private company this would all be done through the courts as a class action. That's also why her barrister told her she couldn't win, because if was essentially the government accusing her of fraud and pressing charges. You can't win against an entity who controls the entire system including the courts. Royal mail was privatised, the post office was not. They are separate things. Edit: This occurred between 2000 and 2014, under labour governments and before royal mail was privatised. It was the result or a faulty accounting system provided by a third party vendor.

@@pault1289 The vendor was Horizon IT. They're an international IT company in their own right with familiar links to labour ministers. Good recommendation though. I've seen it but worth a watch for anyone else interested

Important information not included or made explicit in this story. This happened between 2000 and 2014 and resulted in ~700 people being falsely accused of defrauding the post office or other financial crimes. It happened because the post office used flawed accounting software from a third party contractor which made it appear as though there were financial short falls when they in fact were not. The post office is a 100% government owned entity. This happened under a labour government and it ONLY stopped when the Tory's took office. Sir Williams did not make up an arbitrary deadline at all. What he actually said was that a deadline for the scheme does exist and that administrators would not be able to process all claims and issue funds by that date due to legislative restrictions. He said so in the context of calling on government to pass legislation to free up the red tape and allow claims to be processed significantly faster. CH4 completely goofed up this story. Moreover if this had been a Tory/social dems/ukip/whoever else mess they'd have gone to great pains to spell that out. But because this happened under Labour's watch, not a peep of who was in government or even the years it happened between. Public broadcasters are not supposed to have political bias it's in their legally binding charter, but here it is clear as day. One likewise can not call this kind of bias reporting "news". CH4 need new leadership.
