Those of us in the know about software systems now see clearly that there was what we call a 'back door' into the software. Why was it there, who used it and for what gain? The money from the subpostmasters' accounts obviously went somewhere and my bet is it was into someone's pocket.

@John-ks6si8 ай бұрын
The depressing thing is that I believe all they gained was not having to admit that the system wasn't fit for purpose. The subpostmasters were prosecuted for fictitious shortfalls brought about by bugs in the code. As others on here have said, though, it's astonishing that the investigators were incentivised by bonuses.
@John-ks6si8 ай бұрын
@breamoreboy I agree it appears to have been manual intervention by support personnel as a result of the bugs. The support people had nothing to gain personally by changing figures, though, so I suspect this was bugs being addressed by a buggy back-end.

Remember that not all sub-postmasters were totally innocent. There were over 7,000 sub-postmasters during 2000 -2010 and 900 were convicted, so the Fujitsu system worked for 87% of the sub-postmasters.

Feel quite sick after seeing Edd Davey spinning why he is just inept, rather than part of the problem!
@thesmallerhalf19688 ай бұрын
Why pick on Davey? He was just one of a number of ministers over time. The defence that he was deliberately lied to by PO management is entirely consistent with what was are hearing now.
@stevewhite6588 ай бұрын
@@thesmallerhalf1968 Davey went on to work privately for those who prosecuted these poor people and made tens of thousands of pounds! On top of his very nice salary ! In business sometimes people lie to you but he went with those who were to pay him handsomely rather than giving an equal ear to the little people. Davey is someone without honour and is self serving!

Vennels is supposed to be a person of faith. She's nothing but a liar and a hypocrite. Considering the lives she's ruined ,I don't know how she lives with her conscience.

It doesn't matter if Vennals knew or not, she should have, she gets paid for knowing what's going on, she's the skipper and she's responsible.

How were these recordings obtained? Because whoever had access to them should have come forward sooner. Their silence meant that people suffered for longer than they had to.
@rosemarymonty53998 ай бұрын
Anybody who lied and are still alive should be charged! Regardless of who they are or how high up in the Post Office. They did not give any breaks to the people who had the post office sites so they are not entitled to any breaks themselves. Any taxpayers money spent on litigation for Post Office Employees must have been known and approved by the Government.

This guy has spent the last 10 years, knowing that something that had happened was wrong, but being restricted by non-disclosure agreements. I expect that now he has been able to include it in his evidence, so there is no longer a restriction on him. I get the impression that he is a bit annoyed and will be very happy to dump any of the post office management in it. One thing about Paula Vennels is that even if she didn't know originally, when she found out that there was a problem with the convictions, she had an obligation to reveal what had happened. The post office is going to do what the government wants it to. If they haven't already, they will be getting a completely new management team, who will be told that they are expected to play by the rules. The post office doesn't have the money to pay restitution, so the government will be paying their share.

What more evidence do you require, an arrest warrant should be issued to make sure all parties are protected.

Justice will be seen to be done when all SPM’s have their monies returned plus interest, compensation for unfair contract termination, recompense for loss of pension investment, compensation for unfair convictions and imprisonment PLUS odious people like Vennells, the PO board, investigators, lawyers, civil servants etc. losing their home and pensions and doing jail time. Next week please.

Chris Head was so very young when this all started for him, and I've no doubt whatsoever that he would never have wanted it, but this scandal has made him the impressive man that he is today. He's so knowledgeable and articulate. I wish him many more happy, strong, successful years because he deserves that.

Two things I don't understand. (1) How could all these very clever and highly paid directors watch 700 subpostmasters turn crooked overnight juat when a new accounting system came on line without smelling something fishy? Is our stock of critical thinking so low in the business world? (2) I keep hearing about Fujitsu processing requests to make "corrections" to postmasters' accounts. The most crucial question for me is: Who was making these requests for "corrections", and how come they always landed on the negative side of the balance sheet to the tune of tens of thousands of £? It seems to me these are the crux of the scandal, and the news media seem uninterested in that. Likewise the police, when there is a strong aroma of computer fraud and embezzlement.

Did they congratulate themselves for having rolled out a new IT system that wasn't just flawless in its processes but also caught red-handed all the fraudsters in the PO? 🤨

How the CEO had the sheer face to accept an OBE while spending £100M of taxpayers’s money to jail people that she knew were likely innocent… jail is necessary to restore public confidence.
@threethrushes8 ай бұрын
'Public confidence' - is that a joke? People have short memories. I remember the Conservative scandals involving MPs and their expenses, the Labour scandals involved second, and third-homes all mortgages paid by the tax-payer. There is zero confidence in politicians for decades now. Anyhow, not my problem anymore. I emigrated 10 years ago, but it is sad to see a once-great nation reduced to simple avarice.

If there's such a thing as genuine British justice remaining in our country, ex P.O. CEO Paula Vennells should be arrested; questioned; charged if any unearthed crimes meet the appropriate legal threshold and then sent for trial at Crown court. If found guilty after a trial, one would imagine a custodial sentence would be the most appropriate punishment.

Paula Vennels… “We are bound by the disclosure act to make known anything we come across that might contribute…” These disclosures prove without a shred of doubt she lied to Parliament. Heads must roll.
