*German for beginners* _Lesson IX: Wortneuschöpfungen und Wortneubildungen (Word formations)_ 3:23 _“[...] den hab' ich _*_wegge... ...spatzt_*_ [...].”_ with *_weggespatzt_* (Erste Person, Plusquamperfekt) ➔ *wegspatzen* (Infinitiv) - *to sparrow away* As seen on previous lessons, we are dealing with another verb in plusquamperfect and again are looking deeply into specific prefixes and how they alter a verb's meaning. The distinctive ending *_t_* and the prefix *_ge_* are present here also. The plusquamperfect is the most common tense used for informally telling stories of recent events. Additional to the terms core word comes another prefix, *_weg._* This prefix however, is known for being a word on its own. _“Weg”_ is usually translated with _route, path_ or just *_way_* as the closest meaning. In our particular case, we are dealing with another prefix used to change a whole new word, _“spatzen”._ Actually, _Spatzen_ means _sparrows,_ as it is the plural form of _Spatz,_ meaning _sparrow._ But as we are dealing with a word formation, the result is a totally unexpected new verb. The closest assumption on how our dear host Vade came to this word creation, whould be a well known German figure of speech. With _“mit Kanonen auf Spatzen schießen”_ (“to break a fly on the wheel”) translates literally to _“to shoot sparrows with cannons”._ Vade obviuosly referred to this idiom, as he just shot a hostile tank commander into bits using a 20 mm gun. Bringing us back to the topic, the prefix _“weg”,_ meaning _away_ in this case, is a pretty steady thing, when looking on other examples. The 222 (and Panzer II/ 232) is kind of unique in its anti-infantry role. It's a big team effort between the driver and the gunner. As the gunner I am usually more occupied with shooting and keeping track of the map and comms to get a "mental image" of what's going on. Luckily, I can rely on Smudo as an expert driver to also keep his eyes open and do the actual spotting of targets at close range.
