Bar mleczny was originally offering only meatless food as meat was scarce under communism. So there were many dishes based on flour, groat, milk, cheese (especially cottage cheese). Pancakes, pierogi were especially popular. Plus of course an unlimited number of soups.

The first milk bar, called "Mleczarnia Nadświdrzańska," was established in 1896 in Warsaw by Stanisław Dłużewski, a member of the Polish nobleman . Although the typical bar mleczny had a menu based on dairy items, these establishments generally also served other, non-dairy traditional Polish dishes as well. The commercial success of the first milk bars encouraged other businessmen to copy this type of restaurant. As Poland regained its independence after World War I, milk bars appeared across most of the country. They offered relatively cheap but nourishing food, and thus achieved even more prominence during the economic depression of the 1930s and World War II. During the post-war years, most restaurants were nationalized and then closed down by the communist authorities. In the mid-1960s, milk bars were common as a means of offering cheap meals to people working in companies that had no official canteen. They still served mostly dairy-based and vegetarian meals, especially during the period of martial law in the early 1980s, when meat was rationed. After the fall of the communist system and the end of the centrally planned economy, the majority of milk bars went bankrupt, as they were superseded by regular restaurants. However, some of them were survive. In the early 2010s, milk bars began to make a comeback. They became small, inexpensive restaurants, while providing good quality food and customer service. Due to their good locations, milk bars often fall victim to gentrification and are defended by activist groups. Today milk bars are privately owned, but partly subsidized by the state and local governments , which allows it to offer low prices.

There could not be hungry people in Poland under socialism. These bars are subsidized to this day and the prices have to be low, which does not mean that the quality is poor. They choose the simplest dishes and make them perfectly. It is a standard for a Pole. In London I remember lousy Chinese for £ 7 made by Pakistanis, it's a bit different than us.

Can absolutely confirm that the food is indeed delicious, the type of taste that you can only find in homestyle type of food!

@@DanFandelli Polish dishes come from a specific history. In Poland in the 16th century, there were 26 nationalities who had their own kitchens. Of course, there was also a kitchen only in Poland. Today, everyone goes to eat, whether it's Polish dishes or of any other nationality. For example, the cabbage rolls you have eaten also have Jews in their kitchen. There are probably 200 kinds of soups alone. As tourists, you only eat specific foods that cannot be found anywhere else. There are also regional cuisines.

Like placki po węgiersku for exemple which is hungarian style pancakes but its a polish dish. pierogi ruskie (russian pierogi) is also a polish dish, id say even national dish
