I think that postal votes can be abused. A person could vote for their whole family if they are controlling. This is not in line with our democratic values. My local town council had to be disbanded and now run by district council, certain councillors from a certain party were caught with fraudulent postal votes in their cars with fictitious names from multiple occupancy rental properties aswell as postal votes from ethnic communities.

There should be ID required to qualify for postal voting. Simply present yourself to the returning officer and answer some questions to ensure you are coherent and then you go on the postal voting list. Also need a check to make sure you aren’t registered in more than one place.

Each citizen has one vote, it is his or her say in the democracy. If someone cheats the voter has lost his or her whole say. Why then should he/she be a good citizen, obey the law and fight for his country when he has lost his say? It is because the vote is so valuable that we have ensure that it is safe and free from cheating. Yes postal votes should be done away with. The argument about older voters does not hold. we have to make some judgement about when someone is too old. When they cannot get to the polling booth is probably the fairest one (I am 77).

I have worked as a polling clerk for many years. I have only witnessed ONE occasion of a vote being ‘irregular’ and that wax down to a clerical error by a colleague. Because of the checks done at the point of voting fraud was/is virtually impossible (so much so that personally I think photo Id is unnecessary). However, the same cannot be said for postal voting IMO. Thats because at the point if voting there is no one ‘overseeing’ that process at the point of the vote being made. It is definitely open to abuse.

You need to address the bleeding obvious. Having a voting window solves most of the glaring issues. Elderly at nursing or retirement homes can vote at mobile voting stations as an example. If you’re mobile, then voting at a fixed station is possible. If you want to nitpick then how do you deal with dyslexic voters, blind voters, those on life support. 99% of voters are able to vote in person, it’s the 1% that need attention.

Only those people medically unfit to vote in person can have a postal vote. For those that qualify for a postal vote, A police officer must visit the person requiring a postal vote. He will check who they are and their eligibility to vote. The police officer will then take the completed voting slip to a secure box. ALL boxes should be held by the POLICE until they are open. NO Local authority security at all.
