I remember once meeting Rudolph Nureyev at the King Edward Hotel in Toronto. I was eighteen years old at the time, still in high school. He was muscular, in his late twenties, of average height, and like many dancers quite healthy and attractive, with eyes of dazzling intensity. The eyes were as unique as the man himself. A creative fire clearly burned within him. A man of truly exceptional capacities. I know several of the ballerinas he performed with, from the National Ballet of Canada, and they all had a special place in their hearts for this dance genius. When you watch other worthy male dancers perform the roles he created for himself, you can still see his spirit coming through every step of the rugged way. I watched him dance in Toronto and New York at least a hundred times. Even when he was exhausted, there was still a magic which shone through, rarely failing him on stage.

One of the soloists smiling in the Kingdom of the Shades! How could a company director/ repetiteur miss such an important little detail.
@ivmile7 жыл бұрын
@ JNK. Well that smile... That was not during solo dance. Was after solo as dancer only answer to applause. That is always problem. To stay in character of role or to be more " private " during applause. Second You can not compare completely two different ballerinas. Physically different. One is French ballet school ( Aurelie Dupon ) and other one is Soviet ballet school ( Victoria Tereshkina ) This is completely incomparable by any standar, as this Paris Bayadere is so different from any Russian productions of Bayadere.

BytomGirl there are very good soloists in POB but unfortunately , the directors don’t put them on the lights. Currently Dupont ( the current director ) nominated Léonore Baulac and Valentine Colansate who were clearly not potential Etoile ( the first one has a terrible technic and often overacts, the second one is not charismatic ) but it’s fine for Dupont. She doesn’t want to promote Heloise Bourdon who literally overshadowed all the étoile from 2012-2015 when she was casted. Bourdon always got standing ovations, technically great, great and emotional acting but Dupont doesn’t like the fact that she was casted instead of étoiles when she was younger and used to be very successful.

Thank you :) I am actually not in Paris but California but like to watch ballets from different theaters.I loved Paris productions of La Source and complete Paquita which you can't find anywhere else. I have watched Bayadere in every possible choreography, from Bolshoi ( Grigorovich) , Mariinsky ( Chabukiani ), Paris (Nureyev )(which I have on DVD) and reconstruction of the original also at Mariinsky ( Sergei Vikhariev ), can't make up my mind which one I like the most. I have to admit I was never crazy about Aurelie Dupont or Guillem whom everybody raves about, I love Pagliero, Ciaravola, Ganio, Hillaire, Le Riche and Paquiette and few others. I think that Paris Opera has seen better times during Brigitte La Fevre.

I miss those strong and expressive Russian backs in the opening arabesque sequence. In fact I miss the Russian way of dancing this white act. The French school of dancing, as corrupted by Nureyev, doesn't suit La Bayadere.

In my opinion, Nureyev was one of the worst choreographers of the late 20th Century. He is the anti-Petipa, a step a second. solar's opening dance was just that, a meaningless dance, unmusical, just steps. I saw him dance since since 1963 and was always underwhelmed at his strength over technique. At least the modern dancers can cope better than he did doing his own nonsense. Serafanov actually makes it look good in Nureyev's Don Quixote. Don't attack me, I know I'm in the minority, but he's more narcissism than talent.
@ivmile7 жыл бұрын
@ Eddie Lew. That is your private opinion, but You must separate RN, dancer from RN, choreographer, even when he is dancing his own choreography. As choreographer RN change dramaticaly with time... His Romeo and Juliet for London Festival Ballet still today is one of the best production of RJ... This London production was declared by drama critics in London as best inerpretation of original Shakespeare drama. Ballet critics first ignored this RJ but then was oblige to changed opinion... RN was very familiar with Kirov`s RJ. RN danced 1965 Keneth Mac Millan premiere in London. 1977 RN created his own RJ for London Festival Ballet. Even today this superb LFB`s RJ from 1984 is possible to see in POB. This POB`s Bayadere is too so diffrerent from all others production of Bayadere and still POB production go strong...

He was not the best one , in my opinion. But, he defected and that was huge! He was better then than most western dancers but - they followed and learned. Think of Barishnikov! Now, there was perfection. Temperament personified perhaps but perfection I shan’t go in, this is about this ballet. The Shades entrance needs a strong core de ballet. It’s all in the arms. I e seen a few. I do like the longer entrance the best. And, Sarafanov as Solor - magnificent! My opinion only. This is lovely, thank you so much. Such dedication to ballet 🩰 is perfect. 🙏🙏👵🇦🇺🩰🩰🩰
