Studying languages, the evolution of language, language barriers, and etymology is by far one of my favorite things to do because in the end, language is always inevitably really weird in certain aspects to anyone who isn’t a native speaker, and these Tumblr posts display that in marvelous fashion.

Judging by the time periods between the modern languages and their ancient equivalents mentioned in these posts, it's more like modern English and Old English (think the English used between the 5th and the 11th century) 😁 but yeah, it still checks out.

6:12 this reminds me of the story of my uncle in France. He got sick and had diarrhea, so he went to a little pharmacy, but he doesn’t speak French, and the clerk doesn’t speak English. So it took my uncle a bit to figure out what he cold do and came up with an idea. He asks the guy “Do you know ‘merde’?” The guy, slightly offended. “Oui.” And my uncle starts nodding furiously and making a pulling/flowing/continuing motion with his hand. “Merde!” The the guy goes “OHHH!” And gets my uncle some anti diarrhea medicine. For those who don’t know, Merde is the French word for “Shit”

In Korean, rice is also very similar to food. You never know,but you do at the same time because we have rice for most occasions.
@Arkylie7 ай бұрын
This is why I was disappointed when the Japanese translation of the Bible had "give us this day our daily bread" instead of "give us this day our daily rice." Because conceptually, rice would be the correct term -- bread is not the staple item, the most basic sort of sustenance, in Japan the way it is in some other countries. God's daily provision across much clearer when it's a food nearly everyone eats nearly every day.

Hello, as a Czech i can confidently say the word "defenestration" is entirely our fault. There were 3 historically important occasions where we defenestrated someone, so we made a word for it. No need to thank us. Thank the catholics (they were the ones getting defenestrated each time)

Linguistics is fun! I've learned some strange things about how other people describe the world. Having no numbers beyond 1 and sorta-2. Having no colours other than light and dark. Evidentiality, which is when you have to say how much evidence you have for any statements you make. These are the things that have stuck with me the most, because of how restrictive they are. How is "black, white, brown (earth-coloured), and every colour of the rainbow" not the absolute minimum??? How do you refuse to count things (children, siblings, livestock, food items, attackers, predators, prey, building materials)??? Evidentiality at least doesn't stop me from saying stuff... as long as I can remember how I acquired the information; hopefully, growing up with it trains one's brain to remember it, because I don't know if I can do that

ok so why does english not have a dual form? a fucking lot of things come in twos. especially if they're fucking for that matter... would also resolve the stupidity of using a plural form to describe a singular object like a pair of pants. or worse, a pair of scissors.

The thing of capitalizing certain words because they feel Important is actually fairly old, even if not common or standard, or used sparingly (imo it's better to use it sparingly anyway). Emily Dickinson is who always comes to my mind, but I don't think she's the only example. She didn't use it The Exact Same Way people on the internet now do (though, exactly what it's for does vary from person to person a bit), but it definitely feels like the same phenomenon (assuming her caps are intentional, which apparently *some* scholars dispute, but I think her caps are generally assumed to be intentional?)
